Grn. Re», and Doe. Div. Nev>» papen, IT of O Library 974«'' The Mill City interprise ON THE SCENIC NORTH SANTIAM HIGHWAY — OREGON’S FAST GROWING VACATION WONDERLAND VOLUME XXII NUMBER 25 Up and Down • The Avenue By Don Moffatt Summer weather finally caught up with us, and when it did it really made things around these parts simmer. Right at the present time this Monday morning, it looks as if it would be a scorcher—so be it — we’ve been hollering like mad for hotter weather. Just think summer started of- cially Wednesday, or at least that is supposed to be the longest day of the year. Al ready the days will begin to shorten, and just when we get used to nice long, warm days, winter will be here again. Time certainly does go by in a hurry. Last week a group from the Garden club was busy beau tifying the corner lot where the entrance to downtown Mill City takes off from the highway. The property be longs to Mert Cox of Stayton, and the ladies have this as one of their projects. It does make our city look more ap pealing and they are to be commended for their civic- mindedness. In this day of computers one can see many fallacies in them. One of the most exas perating things about these telephone recordings is that you can’t tell them anything. They’ll keep on giving you a long spiel and then end up with “this is a recording.” I suppose it is all right, but I still enjoy hearing a “live” voice on the other end of the line, as then one has the feel ing that there will be intelli gent assistance. Many people have the idea that the com puter is infallible. This is not the case, because a computer can only be as efficient as the material that is being fed into it. So as long as man has to feed the “beast” the facts, he will be in demand. I read recently that: “Find ings of a national public opin ion poll on reduction of fed eral spending in preference to a tax increase are hardly surprising. In the first nation wide poll taken since Presi dent Johnson’s State of the Union Message, the public fa vored reduced spending and no tax increase by a 13-1 mar gin . . . (this) would leave little doubt, it seems to us, that congressmen and senat ors would be doing the popu lar thing in voting for re duction in expenditures and against any tax increase at this time.” I’ll bet we are in for a nice healthy tax increase though, because with the in creased spending for war, and no slackening in other govern ment programs it is inevit able. The same goes for our state government. We will have to eventually learn to live within our tax income, something government agen cies fail to realize. Spokesmen for the anti trust division of the Depart ment of Justice have indicat ed that they do not envision a broad scale program im posing limitations on adver tising. But, at the same time, there continues in official circles the underlying belief that advertising results in higher prices. Nothing could be further from the truth. Advertising builds sales vol ume and lowers its costs. Consumers benefit in lower prices, abundance and variety in the marketplace. Despite fine-spun theories to the con trary. excessive federal strait jacketing of the merchandis ing process would guarantee scarcity, higher prices, dis ruption of production and employment and bankruptcy for a good many of our news papers and periodicals. With this type of thinking in of ficial circles, consumers may need protection, but it certain ly isn’t from advertising. THE MILI. CITY ENTERPRISE—MILL CITY.
