Per sonnel and safety supervisors of the Crown-Zellerbach Company and Ray- onier, Inc., and the operating super intendents of the plants of these firms assembled at the Columbia Gorge Hotel for a conference and interchange of ideas. Oregon representatives were here from West Lynn, Lebanon, Siltcoos, and Lewis and Clark division of Clatskanie, and from the western waxed paper division of the Crown- Zellerbach company. P l a n t s in Washington were represented by delegates from Camas, Port Angeles, Port Townsend, Grays Harbor, Shel ton and Cathlamet. J. D. Zellerbach, executive vice- president o f both companies, and Albert Bankus, vice-president of the Crown-Zellerbach company, were in attendance ai the closing sessions. The conference was in charge of A. R. Heron of San Francisco, Dir ector of Industrial Relations for both companies. J. E. Hanney, resi dent manager of the Camas division, and F. N. Youngman, assistant vice- president of the Crown-Zellerbach company, put in a good share of time at the meetings and both addressed the conference. Topics discussed included social security, general safety of workers, employment problems, and job anal ysis. Otto Hartwig, in charge of social security for both companies, explained in an interview that it is the practice of the companies to see that all workers are informed about the functions of the social security law. One purpose of the Hood River conference was to further inform personnel managers of the various plants about the workings of the new law that they might pass the knowledge on to the workers, with a more contented and intelligent group of employees resulting. Civil Service ex amination preliminary to selection of the candidates will be held on Oc tober 8, 1938 in various post offices throughout the District. Applicants should immediately secure informa tion from Congressman Pierce at La Grande. West Point cadets must be quali fied voune men, in fine physical con dition, between 17 and 22 years of age, and not less than 5 ft. 4 in. in height. Annapolis candidates must be between 16 and 20 years of age. Young men entering these schools receive payment from the date of enthance and are thus enabled to earn an excellent college education, meeting all expenses, and also accumulating some savings. It was brought out that these two companies, deal ing in a class of work that presents some natural hazards, had reduced accidents from 36 to 21 per million man-hours in a one-year period end ing in April, 1938. Keeping accidents at a minimum results in better workmanship, one company official stated, pointing out that when an accident occurs in a plant, the mental balance of other workers is affected, resulting possibly in other accidents and lack of efficiency on the part of machine operators. The two companies, which are separate, but which cooperate in the personnel and safety division, hold such joint conferences as the one at the Columbia Gorge Hotel to talk over mutual problems and inter change ideas. KNIGHTS HAVE PICNIC One hundred and forty were pres ent Sunday at Viento Park when the Hood River Knights of Pythias lodge met at the picnic grounds for an all day picnic. Dinner was served by wives of the Knights at noon, with ice cream a special feature later in the day. Many visitors from The Dalles joined the festivities at the park. The K. of P. band was present in uniform, and in addition to their o f ferings, “ Punch” Isenberg gave sleight-of-hand performances. EXAMINER COMING The Examiner of Operators and Chauffeurs will be in Hood River Tuesday, August 2, 1938, at the Chamber of Commerce, between the hours of 9 a. m. and 5 p. m., respec tively, according to a recent an nouncement released from the Secre tary of State’s office. All those wishing permits or licen ses to drive cars are asked to get in touch with the examiner during these hours. TO O MUCH FIRE The game scheduled for last Thursday between the Hood River softball team and Wyeth CCC teams was called off, because many of the CCC boys were away on fire fight ing duty. Next Thursday Hood River will meet Stevenson in a soft- ball game of the Mid-Columbia League series at Stevenson. Mar-Vista V. O.
