WHY OREGON GROWERS COULDN'T COMPETE Tbs faot that llocil River aud other apple estitions throughout tbe ctato are not cuuipetlDg at the National Apple Show tor prizes is causing con siderable comment and tbe Oregon iau iu au article luesdav says iu explans tieu: After having invited world-w'rle' cmnpetltini, the management of tbe National Apple Show, wbioh is beiui held ut Spokuue, adopted regulations governing tbe competitive exhibit that practically precluded the apple growers of this state irom baring any chance. 'I he speclHaatious adopted by tbe Spokane people di tiered in many material respects from (those adopted and recognized in judging ex hibit! by the American Fomologlcal Society. As a result Oregon growers are exhibiting at tbe Spoknne show not to exceed one-tbird ot the number and varieties of apples tbat tbey had contemplated, aud as bas previously been announced in,tho Oregonian, Hood ftjver growers are unt compet ing at all. Tbe Jlood Rj.rer people bad a oar load of their choicest apples packed sud toady tor shipment to tbe Bpo kuue show, but wueu tbey learned of tbe specifications by which the exliiu its were governed tbey decided not to eeod the caiload, whiob wis sold in the market," Haiti H. M. Williamson, secretary of tbe State Board of Hor ticulture, yeetetday. "Ibe Oiegon pioduoer toon t bid action because undet the regulations tbat bad been adopted for judging the exhibits tbey were satisfied they would not be on an equal tootiug. Learning this, the Spokane people sent a representative to Portland to smooth things over and get a large exhibit trom this state, lint tbe concessions were made too Lite and less than pne third nf tbe ex hibit I bat bad been planned tiom this state was sbippe J to Spokane. "In many important respects tbe rules of the Spokuae apple pr moters d i tiered from those reoocnized by tbe American Pumological Sooiety. Par ticularly was this true of tbe Spitzen 1 erg and Yellow Newtown varieties, tbe two leading varieties produced in this state. Another objection to the Oregon growers was because of the grading provided for the Ortley, tbe third apple iu commercial importance in tbls state, the t eaiityand quality of tbe fruit being couisdered. Several inferior varieties nf applps were sched uled for higher grades in the marking Of exbibitg than tbe Ortley, wbicb ia generally regarded as one of tbe fore most varieties of apple?, "The regulations and specifications legarding the exhibits were such that the growers ot this state would not Lave bad a fair chance in an ordinar ily equal competition. The revision or those conditions was not only un ta'isfhctoiy iu the main but was made ttio late to make it possible for tbe Oregri'i grower to prepaie anothel caiload ami u.tko the xlei sive ex hibit II oy tail iutendeil. To the Editor: Mr. A.I. Mason's statement to tbe Commission of Coun tiy Life in Portland on last l'hursday is read with surprise. 1 am reiy sor ry to II nd a man like this In Ibe peaceful community of Hood River valley. In part of bis statement he declared that future geneiations ot Americans will be brought down to the level of the Orientals and will have tc contend with them for living wages, tbat lowered social conditions, small wages, competition betweeu Americans aud Japauese for a liveli hood and a demoralized standard of oivillzatiou will te the result of tbe introduction ot Japanese labor on this coast. And continuing Mr Ma sou said in strong terms, "the Japs are tbe worst class of ondesirat ie cit izens. There are from 400 to 500 Jap anese in tbe Hood River valley who are used to piok and pack apples and cook. I (Mson) would uever hire one aud 1 do uot think any one else should give them employment." Indeed Mr. Mason dues not hire any Japanese la bis orchard and therefore does not know niuon about Japanese. Misunderstanding is tbe cause of ev ery (trouble among tbe people. If be thoroughly studied Japan aud tbe Japanese with a broad view, be would learn that tbey are neither a fearful nor loathsome people. Xbere are only 200 Japanese in Ilood River valley today instead ot 4U0 as Mi. Mason stated. There are about 4000 Japanese iu the state, including 500 independent professional men, merchants aud farmers. Many ot tbera are graduates of high sobools and colleges in Japan and have a good education though they may not be able to speak much Kuglish. these young people aie learning aud prepar ing to Ot themselves to be business men or intelligent farmers in this great country of freedom and libeity. It will never demoralise the. civiliza tion of this ciuntry nor iotr tbe standard of the sooial condition of the community. For iuhtauce, the Japanese in Hood River valley ha-.e an ope ' society under tha name nf the Mutual Henellt society witb Mxty members. The object of tile ent lei y ia to promote tbe friendship between Americans aud Ji'paqecy aud further more to'use ell efforts (o pubb the progressive industry of Hood liivei and its surrouud:ng villages. Ihe JpBBt)e have done a great work ther. Tbey bavc cleared many thousands of acres of wild land into piosprrous or chards and besides tbls they are pick ing and pnoking the apples satisfac torily to the employers. As far as the national politics ot any natiou is the reflection o' its eo pie's thoughts aud deeds. Japan bas a beautiful demonstration of what she has done and H doing "day aud a prospective future is awaklug ter wjtb i lappel. Japan bas 30,000 ele mentary schools witb 5,500,000 pupils, 2,000 Industrial schools witb an en rollment ot 150,000 students, 500 high schools witb 200,000 students, 70 nor mal sobools with 20,t)O0 future teach ers and 75 colleges witb an enrollment nt 50,000 students. The piimary vrades of six years are taught undei tbe ocmpulsory system aud the attend ance of children of sohool ages is nearly uluety eight per ceut. Who bail say that Japan Is a hen t ten oountiy and tbe source of the yellow perils? Fortunately most (if the Auerlosm aud Kurnpeans are t'egiuoing to study tbe Oriental problems with a d.e p ttioiiubt and thus nnveil the dark certain which n tbe real hindrance tc knowing each other by tbe Occident a Is and tbe Orieutals. ffla li " y Coffee The aroma-tight part protect: t against impurities tnq deteri oration never gold n bulk.
