MULTNOMAH DELEGA TION ANTI-STATEMENT With the rotes of six statement men, the four anti-statement mem bers of the Multnomah county legisla tive delegation Sunday effected organ ization by eleotlong Senator John li. Colfey, one of tboir un ruber, chair- mua of the delegation. Mr. Colfey defeated E. J. Jaeger, Statement Kep-roscntative-elect and chairman ot the organization ot the statement mem bers of the Houne already formed, by a vote of 10 to 7. The six statement men tc go over to the antis for the purpose cf suppoiting Colfey are said to have been: Senator A. A. liailey and Kepretentatives-elect J. D. Ab bott, F. J. Urady, W. J. Clemens, U M. Davis aud C. J. McDonald. D. D. Mahoue, a Statement Kepre sentative-elect, was elected secretary over J. D. Abbott, another Statement mau, by the close vote of 9 to 8. Sev enteen ot the 20 members of the dele gation attended the meeting. The ab sentees were : Senators 11. K. Albee aud C. W. Nottingham and Kepre sentative -elect B. C. Altaian. The election of Senator Cotiey. says the Oregou Ian, bu anti-Statement man as chairman of tho delegation rom Multnomah county is regarded as the entering wedge from which a serious disorganization of the state ment forces iu that oouuty will prob ably result. The desertion of their own candidate for chairman by six of cne htaiement men wbo joined with the four anti-statement members in electing Mr. Colfey chairman Is con sldored to have significance as beaiing Indirectly ou the Senatorial situation. it also indicates very plainly that Statement members will not be found standing together for the organiza tion o. the Legislature along striotly Statement lines. The same feeling is reported tu prevail among some of the statement legislators throughout the state. Ihe notion ot the Statement members of the Multnomah county delegation Sunday has served to In crease veiy materially the prospects tout the Legislature will not be oi gaulzed by the Statement forces. Skamania County Will Exhibit Koswell Shelley writes the Uluoier that Skamania county, through the generosity of the citizens of Stevenson and Carson will be heard from at the Spokane apple fair. P. S. C. Wills ot Steveusou and the wrletr will rep reset! t the county there and hope to put up an exhibit .that will clearly demonstrate the diversified resources of our countiy. We go to Spokane on December 0. The Woman's Club . November 25th the club omitted the usual program and held just a buei uess meeting. The delegates to the convention ot the Oregon Federation of Women Clubs, made their re ports. They were met at the depot by a delegation of ladies, ihe meet ings, they stated! were very en joyable. l lie reports from the ditterent clubs show that much good work is being done along many dittereut lines. Voting women who are working to set an eduoatiou and need assistance are loaned money, witboti interest, from the scholarship loan fund. Three new clubs have joined the federation this year. Next year the convention meets at Forest Grove. News Notes of Current Doing It has been predicted that the great Y. M. C. A. movement which resulted in raising $51,250 at Eugene iu seven days, is to te felt lu many of the oth er cities aud towns of Oregon. The Presbyterian pastors of Port land met at the'Commercial Club last Friday bb the guests of Piesident II M. Crooks of Albany College, and pledged $10,000 as Portland's part in the endowment of that institution. W II. Webrutig has been elected President of the Portland Country Club aud Livestock Association, and Secretary M. D. Wisdom will go to Chicago to attend the international show and arrange dates for next year. In Goldendale, Washington, the High School pupils had a great deal ot fun with their "Tag Day" on Sat urday. The prooeeds will go towards painting the school building. Congiessman William Lorirrer of Chicago, member of the Kiver and Harbor Committee, la making an ex. tended visit to many of the important harbors of the Pacific Coast. He gave the Columbia river espeoial attention. One of the most enjoyable trips yes! made by the Portland Kealty Board was to Vancouver, Washington, on the 2Ktb. They went by trolley and returned by the Spokane, Portland & Seattle Hallway, over the tamous bridge which spaus the Columbia and Willamette The realty men were roy ally entertained. A premium list superior to any offered before is teiug circulated for the approaching Oregon State Dairy Association's Convention at Salem December 10 and 11. Particularly handsome oups are a featuer of the prizes. Correspoudeore indicates an atteodaoe larger than ever efore, RALPH B. FI!IER SHOT TO lEATH KILLED WHILE AT WORK IN OFFICE Murdered Man Well known Here Where He Had Relative. Loral Bar As sociation Takes Action. James A. Fincb, a disbarred attor ney, while under the influence of drink or drugs, Is In the Multnomah connty jail, charged witb the murder or Kalpb risber, a well known Pott land lawyer whom be killed last Sat urday. The murder of Fiaber is not without local interest here as the wife of the victim of Finch's mad frens?y Is a sister of C. T. Mr. and Mrs. Kobeits went at onoe to end their aid and sympathy to the grief stricken wife ot Fiaber, who witb a tabe of a tew months la left to mourn the loss of a devoted buaband and father. The murder of Fisher, who is said to have been a man ot tine character aud exemplary habits as told by the Journal is as follows: "Fincb murdered Kalpb B. Fisher n the latter's orlloe. 322 Mohawk building, at 1:30 o'clock Suturdav afternoon. The assassin gave bla vic tim no chance for his life but shot him to death from behind aa Mr. Usher sat at hU desk. Mr. Fisher never even saw the man who killed him. Fiuob entered the office where Fisher and his stenographer, Miss Verna 11. Buokbardt, were and said hello, Kal ph.' At the same Instant be readied in his hlD Docket and null. ed out the revolver wbiob be bad pur chased specially for bis murderous work aud tired. The first bullet struck tbe lawyer at the base of tbe skull. As tbe mor tally wounded man half use from bii obair at tbe impact of tbe bullet. Fiuob tired ugaiu, but niiiaed, tbe bullet breaking tbe plate glass ot tbe wiudow. A third time tbe assassin pulled tbe trigger, and Mr. Fisher fell to tbe floor stone dead, a bullet through bis bruin. He tell half on his right shoulder, his legs kunder the desk and partly bent. He must bare been dead before bis bead reaobed tbe oi. aud be never moved again. "The murderer hesitated only long enough to make sure that be had com pleted bla work, then with the smok ing revolver still in his band, left the otUoe and ran down the corridor to the elevator, whlob he entered at tbe same time us did Miss Burkbnrdt, the stenographer who had witnessed the crime and who, frightened almost in. to hysterics, bad fled from the room wltli tbe sound ot the shots echoing in her ears, "it does not appear that Fincb had any deflnate plan of escape other than merely to run away from the scene of his orlme. But be sot no further turn the head of tbe stairs, for Dr. U. F. Leonard, whose office is near that ot tbe murdered man and woo bad beard tbe shots and the screams of Miss Buokbardt, run out into tbe eorrldor and seeing Finch running down tbe ball, realized that the man had committed some crime, and ran after him. "As be laid bis band on Fincb to bold him, tbe murderer reaohed tor bla pocket to draw tbe revolver again, but at this Instant Cester V. Dolph ran out ot bis law office and seized Finch's arm. D. Leonard and Mr. Dolpb suc ceeded in wresting the sua from Finch's grasp and led bim buck down tbe ooiTjdor toward tbe door of tbe man whom he bad slaio. "The police were immediately noti fied by Or. John Davis that a man bad been shot, though when be tele phoned, Dr. Davis did not know who it was. Officer Casey, Patrolman Thorpe. Harms and Leisy and Detec tive Tioheuor arrived within a tew minutes aud took charge of tbe mur derer, who was being held by Dr. K. Kelly, Dr. W. A. Kobei ts and Mr. Dolpb. Fincb was taken into tbe room where bis victim lay dead upon the floor, bis bead in a thickening pool of blood, and allowed to view bis work. But be expressed no re gret at what be had done, took no in terest iu tbe body ot tbe man whose vigorous aud useful lite be bad a few minutes before snufted out. His only thought was for himself. " 'Send for tbe sheriff, send for the sheriff,' be implored, evidently tear ing that the wrath of tbe crowd might demand bis summary punish ment for the cowardly murder." Tbe motive wh'ob prompted Finch to shoct Fisher is said to be on ao oouut of the fact that tbe latter wbo was prosecutor for the bar association of Portland instituted tbe proceedings that caused his disbarment from prac ticing bis profession. Tbe assassin's law partner, C. JH. Piggott, wbo will represent Finob In court, declares that tbe direot cause ot tbe shooting was tbe breaking of laitb by tbe dead prosecutor in an agreement between bim aud Finob oonoeruing the prosecutiou of the dis barment proceedings against tbe lat ter.
