HOUD RIVES ULAOIER THUKBDAY, KOVEliBgR ifl, iflOS. (two Issued Kvery Tbnrtday by ARTHUR D. MOE. PubM.hw. Now tbat tlocd Kivei ii talking bout atrtet oars, The Uallea bat got the ferec, id the Chronicle aaya tbat tbero ia a rumor afloat tbat a oar ine g ioou to bb built in tbBt city. It may ha that tba extfDulon or me Hood Hirer line la through to The Dalles. to ba pubbed Ihe big booster meeting at White Salmon Saturday thowa an awakeniug In the thriving Noitb Uauk town orosa the river that bowa It U on the way to rnoBperity and the tart ot the buildina of a city. .The new rail road will help oudeifully iu dbvelop inn that vide of tint river, and there ia no reason why White rjslmou ehould mt tin the most famous town on the road between Portland end Spokane, as Hood River ia the brightest spot along the O. K. & N. 'J. be enthusiasm manfetted ty the Mt. Hood Deoole in undertaking to build a cat line to traverse the upper valley and ran lo this oity, is com mendable. and Is of that Hood River spirit which baa pushed this valley to the front. The underthkiiig if a big 0D8, and means a lot of work to be dona by the promotors, before even a onod start la made, and we wish them success. Ihe whole valley is in terested in a oar line, not only on the east side ot the river and the upper valley, but also on the west aide, whore Mr. Bell and his associates oomtemDlate buildina a line. While the city of Hood River does not want to be burdened with several street oar franchises, any legitimate enterprise of this kind will have no trouble In getting Into the Oity. The city wanta to see street cars wbiob start some whore and go somewhere, with the terminus at the boat Hues and rail roads, and will give every encourage ment to such projeots. The funds raised for a good road on the west side, and now In the banda of a committee to expend for tbut purpose, will probubly result in a small pieoe of permanent road. If tbat is doue, it will demonstrate tbat permanent road building Is the only method lo pursue to get proper re sults with ultimate eoomomy. The main trunk roads out into the valley sh'MiM all be maondamized ur oiled, or both, uo matter what the cost, and the sooner a start is made in tbat direollon, the better. A steam roller and a rock crusher are tbe llrst two pieces of machinery necessary to build roads, aud should be the first expen diture of publio money. Tbe cost would be too great to oover the valley with permanent roads of crushed rook and gravel the first year, but several miles of permanent road each year should be built, extendiug thorn as ' fust as possible. Such roads oan be theu kept in rupalr at a minimum ex pense, and aside from tbe greater economy iu tbe loug run, they will afford a saving of mouey and time continually In tranaportatlon over them. 'Ihey will also eucoursge home soekers to come to Hood River valley to make thulr homes, and enhance the value of the farm property. There is no doubt that some soit ot state legis lation will be passed this winter, look ing to state aid, wbiob will help pro gressive communities wbo are dis posed to do something themselves, but a system cf permanent good reads should be started at ouoe In any event. OliHurvcd Tlenian Day The Masonio Lodge observed Tie- man Day at their ball Wednesday evening, November 11, In an appro priate manner, and the meeting was attended by a large gathering ot mem bera of tbe ordet. The oocaslon is an annual event, November 11 belug set aside toi a Masonio meeting In mem ory of Heury Tiemau, who willed bis property to the lodge for tbe purpose of building a bime for the Masonio bodies. W. L. Clarke read a very interest ing paper on the life of Mr. Tiemau in Hood River, and be waa followed by K. L. Smith, wbo reviewed the early lite of the sailor wbo was with Commodore Peiry when the latter broke down tbe barriers of Japan aud opened up to tbe woild the oommer oial relatiuus of that oouutry. He couoludod bii remark! with a review of tbe inoideuts counaotod with tbe coming ot Mr. Tiemau to Hood River, settlement in the upper valley, becom ing a member of the order and Dually leuvingJliiB property to the lodge. Au oyster supper followed Iu tbe liauuuet room, and a few remarks were made by local mombors to add to he enjoyment of tbe oocaslon. Ministers' Meeting Kigbteen ministers and their wives of Hood River valley and oity gather ed at the parlors ot the Mount Hood Hotel Monday morning for a social session, which was highly enjoyed by all. After au exobauge of greetings and good fellowship, the nompany re tired to tbe dining room, - where banquet was spread. ihe flower decorations were rare aud most beautiful while the Hue chicken dinner louiid favor In a cul tivnted appetite, liest of all were the upicy aud inspirational (speeches, Aiuoug the visitors were Revs. Skip worth of The Da lien and Tate, Mollnr miok and White ot Hood River. Merrill, of tbe Pa oltio States Company ia io tbe city und nays they are rebuilding tbe long distance liue between here and Port laud. Hood River will have three di rect oirouita to Portland, while there ia only one now. Tbe liue is complet ed as far as Troutdale, and 100 men are workiug from that point east. Tiny will reach here some time in Deoember with tbe completed line. The system is being standardized, new oopper wires and new poles re placing tbe old material, and will result in a much improved service, besides doing away with tbe delay uow caused by uo overworked wire, HOOD RIVER APPLES ABOVE ALL OTHERS As an unsolicited testrmonial of tbe superiority ot Hood River apples over all competitors we publish a portion of a letter received by trie nooa i.ivtr Apple Growers' Onion from Stein- burdt & rieiiy, ew lorn my, woo purchased tbe Union's fancy apples this season, which reads as follows: New Vork City, Nov. lo, Hood River Apple Growers' Union, Hood River, Or. -non. Uentleiuen Tbe market was very weak today on ordinary stuff, and you are no doubt aware that theie are thousands and thousand ct boxes of apples coming iu dally now. Wbeu tbe writer waa on tbe dock tbis morn ing be counted twenty-two cars of box apples, aud they seemed to be moviug pretty alow, but for your sat isfaction and especially for your de lectation we desire to btate tbat your Iruit bas absolutely no competitors. Your fruit Is in a class I y Itself. It may be a poor business policy on our part to praise your fruit to this ex tent. However. e feel it is due to you and to tbe growers in your valley, and vou onubt to know the exact truth about tbe stock you are ship ping. Without any Question' of i doubt tbe Hood River Apple Growers' Union rack, cradinu aud Quality stand fur above anything ever put ou tun irar ket. aud as we said betore sou have abjolutely no competitors. We would not care if there were a hundred cars a day Iu this market, we teol tbat they oould not hurt your fruit, as li stands absolutely in a cIhss by itself, and we fear uo competitors from any source, at least not this year hnyliow. We are gottiug hurt iu tbis market uow from all seutlous of tbe North west and have thoroughly examined all the fruit coming from these other sections, aud we Und there Is nothing oan touch youra. Without, any doubt you aie shipping us the fluent fruit grown In tne world, aud we are very proud tbat we are handling it ou tbis end. It you will last continue grading and packing as well as you bave doue so far this season, you are bouud to wlu out and do better fur the growers of your Union every year.
