Ibe total number of tioketa sold to points west ot Hunt ington was 9,014, while last year it was 7,972, au increase of 1,042. It is estimated tbat about aa many home sekera arrived in Oiegon over tbe Southern Faolflo and Northern Pa ciHc, making tbe total increase about 2,000. Statistics gathered at important points cn the Hartiman system show ed Portland leceived 2,213 colonists, against 2,315 for 1905, but Spokane received 831, as compared with 678 last year. Tbe railroad ollloials leel gratiUed tbat tbe travel tended more o the smaller tots us, as they argoe be fact' illustrates tbat the class of 'ravel was desirable, aud wa made up uoatly of presons desiring to settle in igricultural comunities, and were not in search of employment. I he total to local stations on the O. H. & N. was 1,511, as compared with I, 437 In 1905. North of Portland it was 2,824, while but 2,279 during the preceding period. To tbe south tbe travl was represented by 1,048 tiokets sold, against 974 in 1905. North of Spokaue it was 587, while in 1905 it was but 289. Hood River seoured 85 persons, against 53 in 1905; LaUrande, 101, against 70; Baker City, 182, as com pared with 144; Walla Walla, 227, with but 153 in 1905, and Pendlton received the same for tbe two years, 99 persons. The sates will be on again during March and April, and in September and October, 1907, and from the en couraging inorease made this season it is hoped to add largely to the totals next year. The demand for laborers at San Francisco because of the gen eral bouilding activity is thought to have attracted many easterners who would otherwise have journeyed north to embark' in agriculture or small business pursuits. Wants Tolls Abolished. Tbe Oregon Journal is making an effort to have tbe tolls on tratUo at Oregou City aboliebed aud asks the commercial bodies throughout the state to help in the movement. In a recent aiticle it says: The Willamette region ought to be rescued from the toll taking to whioh its products are subjected at Oregon City. The process is a relio of priml itve civilization and ought to be dis carded. It ought to have gone with the ox yoke the fli'll aud tbe flint lock. In spite of the faot that it oosts tbe farmers aud consumers of the re gion an Immense sum every year, it is retained. And this is the twen tieth century too. The Journal is for rescuing the magnitloient Willamette region from this relio of pioneer days by purobase of the locks or construction of new ones. The Journal would discard this tollgate maintained for mulcting traHio, and make the Willamette what it was designed to be, a free and open waterway, tbe people's own atd not a In a recent Issue of tbe Journal Mr. D. B. Ogden, a government engi neer, showed how comparatively small would be the oost of new locks, how no corporate power coura inter vene to prevent tbe poeple from building new locks and how great would be tbe benefit. It all makes the wondei grow, why have the peo ple of tbe Willamette valley paid this toll so uncomplainingly and so long? If they will rally now in an effort t" throw down this barrier to an nn ,bandicappped traffic, tbe Journal will do everything it can to aid tthem. Will not the comer. ial bodies join In a movement to open ihls splendid watreway? Will not the newspapers take op tbe fight? Will not tbe grang es and other farmers' organizations utter a ringing protest, and petition for redress? , ' A strong pull and a pull all together will rid Willamette of this toll taking pawnshop establishment at Oregon City and let her commerce flow un fettered to Portland and the sea. Spraying Law Sustained. Tbe new law relating to spraying was upheld Friday, when the jnry in the suit of T. K. A. Sellwood ys. James H. Reid brought in a verdict . JofanrUnt RftAF beinB OUl. 1 UtV kUD - - about three boors. The verdict wai expected by all parties to toe case, and the jury was out rnuoh longer than anticipated. The trial of the case lasted two days and aroused Intense interest, not only in Clackamas oounty bat in other sec tions of the state, aa it waa generally considered a test ot tLe law, under which Commissioner neiu, "" "' i-.- t hi. nfttniul Mnanitv notified T. R. A. Sellwood, ot Milwaukie, to spray tbe trees in bis orchard, and after bis failure to do so took some men, went into tbe orcnara ana cur down 34 prune trees that were Infest- : L. c..n Iab. umIa QU Willi O.u .w. The rulings of Judge McBride on questions that arose daring tbe trial i r.t tha Wandant in ev Reid h d a tight to cut down the trees, after Sellwood bad failed to comply with tbe law and bis Instruc tions to the jnry were clear and de cisive. He said there were only three propositions to be considered wheth er or not the orchard waa infected ; whether the plaintiff baa been given notice and time In which to spray, and whether be bad aprayed. Tbe court defined the dntles of tbe fruit inspector, and said when tbe official found an orchard in a diseased con dition it was bis duty to notify tbe owner, and after he bad failed and neglected to spray his trees, tbe in spector could use his discretion In either' cutting down tbe orchard or spraying tbe trees himself and charg ing the expense as a lien against tb property, lie ruled that it waa not necessary for tbe fruit inspector to warn of the consequences tbat might ensue in tbe event of failure to spray, and that ignorance of tbe law waa no excuse. Tbe result of tbe trial will no doubt mike tbinga easier for tbe fruit in spectors, who have had no easy task aud have aroused the enmity of sooret of people. It is considered likely that violations and unlawful practices will now come to an end. Polk County Observer. Had a Clone Call. Tbe mule is half boss and half jack, says a Biokleton schol boy, and then comes a f nil stop, nature having dis covered ber mistake. They weigh more according to their heft than any other living thing excepting a crow bar. They oan't bear any quioker nor tauter than a boss yet their ears are big enough for snow shoes. You oau trust them with anybody whose life inn"t worth more than the average floater. Tbe only way to keep tbem in a pasture is to turn them into an adoining field. 1'bey are ready for ate as soot as they'll do to abuse.
