The question of Rood roads in
Columbia couutv has been and will
be a leading one with the people of
this county. I cr while all roads
4 'do not lead to Rome," still they
do lead to some town in which the
farrier trades ar funis a market and
from which he ships his surplus
products. The merchant as well is
interested, for good roads over
which travel conies the easiest and
over which heavy loads arc hauled
is the secret of success in his trade
as regards sales.
While Columbia county Ls a tim
bered county roads are hard to
make and expensive. On the prai
ries of Iowa the writer knaws of
numerous road soad supervisars
who have as many as half a dozen
sections in their control and all the
trouble he is put to or expense in
curred is on small bridges, all road
work being done by poll tax. And
there a road supervisor must under
stand his business. He is selected
by vote of his neighbors. 1 le takes
a pride in the condition of roads in
his district. Rock crushers there
are as cuknown as husking pegs
are in Oregon.
The matter of good roads in Col
umbia county should be a question
in which even-farmer in his section
is interested in and in which he
should take a pride and assist iu
the work, of securing. Good roods,
like good citizenship, go hand in
hand. Good, full days of hard
work done by a few liberal spirited
citizens in a locality, often per
forms wonders in the way of ma
king travel possible over a delapi
tated piece of road. But a piece of
good road will never endure on a
poor foundation, no more than a
house will stand on a foundation i
of i?and.
Good roads muit have drainage and
built wide enough to allow for travel.
All public ro;;da should be built ni ha
view or enduience and each year added
thereto. We arc all interested alike in
this matter and should pay onr poll tax
cheerfully. No one should really be
exempt from paying poll tax, only age,
be he fireman or letter carrier or presi
dent. A j ust pride in good roaJg, which
benefits all alike, should be an incentive
to hare better roads.
