The moral wave that has taken hold of the City of Portland is doing good, for the time at least, and it goes to show that earnest work can accomplish much good. Portland, like other cities and communities, is made up of a mass of humanity that needs but a lead er-l it in the interest of a labor movement, Chinese riot, street car or any other strike. To get a horde of men interested needs agitation, the expounding or making plain and lucid the object to be attained. But will this moral wave have accomplished its object after these Kvangelists have shaken the soil of Portland North Knd streets from their shoes wil the good last and bear fruit. 'Yes, we believe it will. Thousands of human lieings have had occasion to hear the vdd of .God and the glad news that the vilest sinner is wel come to the fold. There are those who claim that the church is too aristocratic and a poor man is not wel comed thec. If this is so, the fault lies with the tiew-holder and not with the church. A good preacher is like a good editor. A good .editor will wade through fire and water to catch a good item to keep his columns full of pure, good information on wholesome topics. It is so with a good preacher. He must lc the needle pointing to the north around whom his congregation will flock. Our idea of re forming and to do good is this: Give the outcast a welcome hand on u full stomach. Don't preach to him on an empty onehe who has a soul like you. It is true it has been hardened, but really an organiza tion such as the Y. M. C. A. can pull off its kid gloves aud interest itself in affairs of this kind. Miss Helen Gould has aroused the admiration of two hem ispheres by her heroic work now being done along this line. Her mode of procedure is to jro direct to the outcast and exact a promise that he will reform. She then goes to the one whom this sinner has offended and exacts a like promise that he will not prosecute and that he will again take back this criminal on good behavior. To our mind more of this kind micht be iracticed. It may not work all the time. Those :xxr fallen women in Portland are hardened. Whv? 'erhaps because of the perfulity of man. Once they were pure. nat nojx.' nave they now ? What ave nue can they take to lead to better lives? They must exist. Therefore if no lasting benefits follow for good from this present moral wave, these unfortunate ones have at least had an opportunity to hear that Christ says while "the lamp holds out to burn the vilest sinner may return;" "enter into the Kingdom of God," "come and I will give you rest." In all the walks of life the men who look for the! crooked will see the crooked and- the men who look for the straight will see the straight. Maty a small man is never done talking about the sacrifices he makes, but it is a great man iudeed who can sacrifice everything aud say nothing. oJ human beings, as nature leaves them, educa tion can do a transforming work. But on human beings, as intemperence leaves them, education falls as water upon flint. . Archeologists have discovered Chaldean love let ters 2200 years old. They will create a stir, however, only when they discover the letters of some Chaldean senator with the familiar postscript, "burn this letter." If the ship building trust1 or its successor, another trust gets the job of building the two new battleships, there will be something doing. In these districts the number of children in Columbia coun ty only is given. 15onus is the valanceof the $50 that is apportioned each district annually, re gardless of the number of children in the district. This 50 should be distributed in October of each year, but cannot be taken from the state fund. There were county funds last October sufficient to give each district onlv $17.76 of the 50 due, hence the balance, 32.25, is made up in this spring's apportionment. 1 K. of P. HALL SATURDAY EVENING APRIL 29th, at 8:30 The lodge of Odd Fellows will be in stituted at Houlton tomorrow, Saturday evening. O. W. Welch, of Marshland, the District Deputy Grand Master, will be assisted by the Kainier team in put ting on the work and in the institution ceremonies. There will be about 30 in itiates, and the boys expect a jolly good time.
