(UPI) -Families someday may be able to store fresh fish in the refrig erator for three weeks without loss of its goodness, an Oregon State University food scientist says. R. 0. Sinnhuber said a new way of preserving food, radia tion - pasteurization, offers Human Nature Basic Problem Of Toll Cheaters OLYMPIA (UPI) Human na ture, not automatic machines. is the basic problem with toll cheaters on the Vancouver-Portland interstate toll bridge, the Slate Auditor Cliff Yelle re Monday. Director D. B. Hedges said automatic machines used to col lect 20ent tolls on the bridge are simply not foolproof. State Auditor Cliff Yello re-1 ported earlier that it costs the! state an average of $60 a day in unpaid tolls because auto matic equipment at the bridge does not reject foreign objects. Yelle rapped the authority for failing to correct mechanical de-; ficiencies at the toll booths. j An audit report covering cal-( endar year 1062 said there was; "a competitive desire of pa trons to beat the tolls." Bridge patrons have managed lo jam automalic equipment with such objects as flattened pennies, lax tokens, foreign coins, merchandise slugs, wash ers and pieces of linoleum cut to size. In some cases candy wafers thrown into toll hoppers jammed the equipment so that it would continue to register paid tolls for nonexistent vehicles. The report also cited a break down of mechanical trap doors which were intended to provide a visual audit of each toll and a warning of violations. Yelle said the deficiencies had been noted in previous re ports but had not been cor rected. "It isn't so much the machine problem as it is the intent and desire of some patrons to try and beat the machines," Hedges said. "There is nothing basi cally wrong with the equipment that the integrity of people would not correct." Hedges said, "We are con stantly trying to devise means to see if we can improve the equipment but so far we haven't come up with any." promise of extending shelf - life of foods if certain problems can be overcome. Anderson are di recting research on the effect of radiation - pasteurization on food spoilage organisms in sea foods, under a $28,000 contract with the Atomic Energy Com mission. In radiation - pasteurization, Sinnhuber said, fairly low dos ages of gamma rays are passed through food, killing neaily all the bacteria. No heat is in volved in the process and the food is in no way radioactive.. Research workers also want to learn about microorganisms surviving radiation treatments, and about those that develop during 'storage. Sl:n Oil Mastodon Bone Held by Professor RENO (UPI) A University of Npvnila scientist today pos sessed the fossilized vertebra of n mastodon or imperial elephant believed to bo at least 15,0(H) years old. j The fossil was discovered un-1 der three feet of frozen soil near Meyers at Lake Tahoe by workmen cxcnvnling for a new Sierra Pacific power sub-station. Hr. Joseph l.inlz Jr., a pale ontologist who brought the fos sil to the university for further study, said Ibe bone possibly came from a wooly mammoth of the ice age. He estimated the animal stood from 12 to 1-1 feel high at the shoulders and weighed between six and seven tons, lie said these creatures became extinct during the ice age 12,000 lo 15.000 years ago.
