are simply not foolproof.

in unpaid tolls because auto
matic equipment at the bridge
does not reject foreign objects.
Yelle rapped the authority for
failing to correct mechanical de-;
ficiencies at the toll booths. j
An audit report covering cal-(
endar year 1062 said there was;
"a competitive desire of pa
trons to beat the tolls."
Bridge patrons have managed
lo jam automalic equipment
with such objects as flattened
pennies, lax tokens, foreign
coins, merchandise slugs, wash
ers and pieces of linoleum cut
to size.
In some cases candy wafers
thrown into toll hoppers jammed
the equipment so that it would
continue to register paid tolls
for nonexistent vehicles.
The report also cited a break
down of mechanical trap doors
which were intended to provide
a visual audit of each toll and a
warning of violations.
Yelle said the deficiencies
had been noted in previous re
ports but had not been cor
rected. "It isn't so much the machine
problem as it is the intent and
desire of some patrons to try
and beat the machines," Hedges
said. "There is nothing basi
cally wrong with the equipment
that the integrity of people
would not correct."
Hedges said, "We are con
stantly trying to devise means
to see if we can improve the
equipment but so far we haven't
come up with any."

volved in the process and the
food is in no way radioactive..
Research workers also want
to learn about microorganisms
surviving radiation treatments,
and about those that develop
during 'storage.
Sinnhuber said radiation of
seafoods was a promising hope
for extending the world's food
supply if further research and
development can be continued.
