4 4 . SV X)ICK WEST Songwriters May Clash in Politics By DICK WEST WASHINGTON (UPI) - A possibility has arisen that the 1964 presidential campaign will produce a cultural clash be tween two of America's most prolific songwriters. We may very well see Miss Gladys Shelley of New York, New Jersey and points east locked in a diatonic or chromat ic struggle with Miss Hank Fort of Washington, D.C., Nashville, Tenn., and points south. According to her press agent, the blonde and beautiful Miss Shelley "has penned more than 600 hit songs," including such sentimental favorites as "Oliver Twist," "I Dig Her Wig" and "Miss American Teen-Ager." I don't know exactly how many hit tunes the blonde and beautiful Miss Fort has penned, but I have heard it said she will write a song at the drop of a hat, and drop the hat her self. Politics to Music Among her more notable con tributions to our musical heri tage are "Put Your Shoes On, Lucy," and "I Didn't Know the Gun was Loaded." The prospect of their talents being pitted against each other, with no sharps and flats barred came about when Miss Shelley summoned the muses and limned out a sprightly aria called "Leave It to the Girls." Mar garet Chase Smith as a cam paign song should the lady from Maine decide to seek the Re publican presidential or vice presidential nomination. Mrs. Smith, I'm told, has in dicated she would make the song her musical trademark if that does come to pass. Now it so happens that the aforementioned Miss Fort is a sort of unofficial bard of the Lyndon Johnson family. She has composed paeans to the Presi dent's wife ("Ladybird"), to press aide Elizabeth Carpenter ("Lovable Liz") and to LBJ himself (a birthday salute). Hard Choice Being non-partisan myself, I wouldn't venture to choose be tween them. But as a music lover, I can give you a sample of their lyric styles. Miss Fort: "We're proud of your Hereford herd And the tender love your give your La dybird." Miss Shelley: "Leave it to the chicks They've got a million magic tricks." Should Mrs. Smith get on the GOP slate and Johnson head the Democratic ticket, it stands to reason that Miss Shelley and Miss Fort would have the in side track for positions as cam paign musical advisers. As many know, this is a disease due to a fungus that lives in the soil of some stales. It pro duces a disease something like tuberculosis of the lungs, per haps with a cough. He removed the tumor, and in a short time the girl brightened up, the excess weight went off of her, her face became pretty again, and she was like her old self. I marveled at thc speed with which this change took place. Recently. I read an article by G. W. Liddle. M.D.. D P. Island, B.S., R. L. Ney, M.D, W. E. Nicholson. B.S., and Naokala Shimizu, M.D., who studied 13 patients with Cushing's syn drome who had cancers and , other types of tumors in dif- j fcrent parts of the body, tumors (hat proved to be responsible1 for the symptoms. This study emphasized the fact that in cases of Cushing's syndrome, physicians must sometimes look for the offending tumor not only in the adrenal glands but in other parts of the body. Today a sort of Cushing syn drome can be produced by the giving of cortisone. If you suffer from allergies you'll want to read Dr. Alvarez' booklet, "Asthma, Allergy and 1 Hay Fever."
