Songwriters May
Clash in Politics
By DICK WEST
WASHINGTON (UPI) - A
possibility has arisen that the
1964 presidential campaign will
produce a cultural clash be
tween two of America's most
prolific songwriters.
We may very well see Miss
Gladys Shelley of New York,
New Jersey and points east
locked in a diatonic or chromat
ic struggle with Miss Hank Fort
of Washington, D.C., Nashville,
Tenn., and points south.
According to her press agent,
the blonde and beautiful Miss
Shelley "has penned more than
600 hit songs," including such
sentimental favorites as "Oliver
Twist," "I Dig Her Wig" and
"Miss American Teen-Ager."
I don't know exactly how
many hit tunes the blonde and
beautiful Miss Fort has penned,
but I have heard it said she
will write a song at the drop
of a hat, and drop the hat her
self. Politics to Music
Among her more notable con
tributions to our musical heri
tage are "Put Your Shoes On,
Lucy," and "I Didn't Know the
Gun was Loaded."
The prospect of their talents
being pitted against each other,
with no sharps and flats barred
came about when Miss Shelley
summoned the muses and
limned out a sprightly aria
called "Leave It to the Girls."

This she offered to Sen. Mar
garet Chase Smith as a cam
paign song should the lady from
Maine decide to seek the Re
publican presidential or vice
presidential nomination.
Mrs. Smith, I'm told, has in
dicated she would make the
song her musical trademark if
that does come to pass.
Now it so happens that the
aforementioned Miss Fort is a
sort of unofficial bard of the
Lyndon Johnson family. She has
composed paeans to the Presi
dent's wife ("Ladybird"), to
press aide Elizabeth Carpenter
("Lovable Liz") and to LBJ
himself (a birthday salute).
Hard Choice
Being non-partisan myself, I
wouldn't venture to choose be
tween them. But as a music
lover, I can give you a sample
of their lyric styles.
Miss Fort: "We're proud of
your Hereford herd And the
tender love your give your La
dybird." Miss Shelley: "Leave it to the
chicks They've got a million
magic tricks."
Should Mrs. Smith get on the
GOP slate and Johnson head the
Democratic ticket, it stands to
reason that Miss Shelley and
Miss Fort would have the in
side track for positions as cam
paign musical advisers.
If so, stand back men! It's
bound to be a gusher!

HISTOPLASMOSIS
Drs. J. Schwarz and G. L.
Baum of Cincinnati, recently
summed up most of what is
known about histoplasmosis. As
many know, this is a disease
due to a fungus that lives in
the soil of some stales. It pro
duces a disease something like
tuberculosis of the lungs, per
haps with a cough. In man the
disease is largely limited to the
lungs. The nodules are, as a
rule, somewhat larger than
those of tuberculosis. Unlike tu-, comparative cost study to de

' As I have said before in this

in the central United States,

CUSHING'S SYNDROME
I remember a rather pretty

ously, she had what is called ,j ht nf ,rcetiom should burn
a Cushing syndrome. A surgeun Cunslanlly "
operated and found a tumor in '
one of her adrenal glands
(which lie over the kidneys).
He removed the tumor, and in
a short time the girl brightened
up, the excess weight went off
of her, her face became pretty
again, and she was like her old
self. I marveled at thc speed
with which this change took
place.
Recently. I read an article by
G. W. Liddle. M.D.. D P. Island,
B.S., R. L. Ney, M.D, W. E.
Nicholson. B.S., and Naokala
Shimizu, M.D., who studied 13
patients with Cushing's syn
drome who had cancers and ,
other types of tumors in dif- j
fcrent parts of the body, tumors
(hat proved to be responsible1
for the symptoms. This study
emphasized the fact that in
cases of Cushing's syndrome,
physicians must sometimes look
for the offending tumor not only
in the adrenal glands but in
other parts of the body.
Today a sort of Cushing syn
drome can be produced by the
giving of cortisone.

Short Tax Form
Casualty of Vote
SALEM (UPI) -One of the
casualties of the Oct. 15 tax re
ferendum was the simplified
card-type personal income lax
return, the Stale Tax Commis
sion explained Thursday.
The data processing machine
return card has been replaced
by a four-page income tax form,
similar in appearance to the
federal income report form.
Tax Commissioner Fred Hoef-
ke said the card system was a
direct casualty of the tax refer
endum. He said it was not until
after Oct. 15 that the commis
sion knew what tax rates would
be used for 1903. He said the
card forms would have had to
be prepared by mid year, so
they could De stuuea insiae lax
flUn6 instruction sheets. Because
there wasn't time for this after
the Oct. 15 vote, the commis
sion had to go back to the long
er form.

3rd Circuit Thursday approved
$100,000 bail for Igor A. Ivanov,

Three appeals court judges
approved the high bail for
lvanov but failed to rule on a
similar appeal from John Bu
tenko, 38, Orange. N.J., who
worked for the International
Electric Corp., Paramus, N.J.
Ivanov and Butenko were ar
rested in Enelcwood. N.J.. and
! later indicted by a federal
grand jury in Newark on three
counts of conspiring to transmit
secrets of the Strategic Air
Command.
Three members of the Soviet
delegation were also accused
but were protected by diplomat
ic immunity and later expelled
from this country.
ine ruling Thursday by ap
peals court Chief Judge John
Biggs, Jr., and judges William
Hastie and William F. Smith
restricted Ivanov's travel to
New Jersey and New York
City.
U.S. Supreme Court Justice
William Brcnnan said recently
following bail appeals by Buten
ko and Ivnnova that their cases
should be reconsidered. He re
commended bail for Ivanov.
U.S. attorney Sanford Jaffce
of Newark said Thursday that
the government would not op
pose bail for the Russian, who
is employed by a Soviet trading
company in New York.
Jaffee said the Soviet govern
ment had agreed to be respon
sible for Ivanov's appearance
for trial. The Soviets made a
similar guarantee on Nov. 14
when the appeals court rejected
a bail request.
