' MM CASCADING WATER Fast moving water cascades down this Baldwin Hills street after a reservoir dam hurst and sent al most son million gallons of water into the area. At least three persons were known to be (lead and many homes were de stroyed. Al one spot the torrent of n'.er and mud swirling over the area was 12 feet deep. (UPI) ...r.i ""x ) A t X i (TtACK INSPECTED Water Service Chief Lee Clark inspects a crack in the surface of the Baldwin Hills reservoir dam just prior lo the disaster. This crack was the first warning officials had of what was to come. Rescue and cleanup crews were swarming over the area todav in attempts to get accurate es- t FT of loss of property. (UPI ) eluge Came lapidly Down Baldwin Hills LOS ANGELES (UPI) For persons trap ped in the path of the torrent unleashed when the reservoir dam collapsed Saturday, the de luge swept down with unbelievable speed. Mrs. Eileen Stockton was rescued by heli copter after she was caught by water four feet deep. "I know it happened in a hurry," she said. "I was just getting in my car to leave my house. The water came rushing down the driveway, and then it was too late. I tried to run around the garage and get away from the water but it engulfed me." She said she grabbed a patio fence and hung onto it until the helicopter picked her up. She said the water swirling about her was four feet deep. The copter brought the mud-covered wom an to the home of Sam Belknap on a hill near and slightly above the reservoir. Belknap had seen the dam give way: "It start ed at the bottom and kept getting larger and larger eroding away toward the top. Then the blacktop road surrounding the reservoir gave way. Then the reservoir itself collapsed." Assistant Fire Chief Forrest W. Moore of the Los Angeles Fire Department said the roar ing water cut "a swath of destruction 100 to 200 feet wide, below the reservoir." "Autos are piled on top of each other and we believe as many as several hundred homes have been destroyed," Moore said. "We start ed through into the area where the water was highest, but before we got there people were screaming for help. "So we came back and sent the helicopter in to get them out," Moore said. Police Inspector Ed Walker said, "It would have been a real serious tragedy if there hadn't been any warning." R. C. Elliott, a home-owner in the area, said his wife called him at his orrice and told him the dam was breaking. "I rushed home and got to my home before the dam burst," Elliott said. I stood at the top of a hill and watched as the gap widened and the rush of water increased. Then it broke. "It was obvious to me my home was definite ly gone," he said. "My home went very fast as I stood watching. All I saw was what was left ! .si i -U. w. 14 C-t-kt ...
