(DPl)-Bridc- es that heat up like electric blankets arc being used to fiRlit winter Ice In two Texan cities, the Texas IliRhway Department says. An overpass on Amarillo's Pierce Street expressway has built-in electric conduits that warm the roadway to a (ew de grees above freezing. The heat ing system's maximum output In an hour could heat a home for five months. The system can keep at least one lane open to traffic in even the worst blizzard conditions. The Amarlllo system switches on automatically when freezing moisture begins to fall, but road engineers can warm up the bridge in advance of a blue norther. A similar system was built Into a twin bridge project in Wichita Falls last winter. High way Department engineers are looking for ways to adapt the anti-icing systems to existing bridges.
