So next Sunday he and the Pittsburgh Steelers take on the New York Giants in a winner-take-all showdown to become eligible for the National Foot ball League's $250,000 jackpot. The Steelers were desperate Sunday. The clock showed less than five minutes to play and they trailed the Dallas Cow boys, 19-17. The Steelers were on their own 16-yard line on fourth down with 14 yards to go. It was now-or-else, Brown figured. The cagey 34-year-old quar terback with 10 years of pro ex perience dropped back in punt formation. Instead of kicking, though, Brown passed the ball to Red Mack for a 42 - yard gain. Six plays later, Theron Sapp broke up the middle 24 yards for a touchdown that gave the Steelers a 24-19 win and kept their hopes alive for the first Eastern Division title in the history of the franchise. Lions Upset Browns Actually, it was the Detroit Lions' 38-10 upset victory over the Cleveland Browns that made next Sunday's game in New York a winner-take-all af fair between the Steelers and Giants. The combination of De troit and Pittsburgh victories eliminated the Browns and St. ILouis Cardinals from the East ern race. Pittsburgh, which has played three ties, is second with 7-3-3. Since ties are not counted in computing the NFL standings, the winner of next Sunday's Giants-Steelers game will wind up with the highest won-lost percentage and qualify for the championship layoff with its nearly $6,000-per-man prizes to the winning players. A tie next Sunday would make ' the Giants Eastern champs on the same basis. The last time a team won a divi sion title with less victories that the runnerup was in 1949. The 'Los Angeles Rams won that year with an 8-2-2 record, compared to the Chicago Bears' 9-3. The Cardinals remained in the running for a playoff bowl berth in Maimi by defeating the Philadelphia Eagles, 38-14. In the Western Division, the Bears stayed ahead of the Green Bay Packers by defeat ing the San Francisco Forty Niners, 27-7. The Packers beat the Los Angeles Rams, 31-14, on Saturday afternoon. The Bears can clinch the title next Sunday by beating the Lions, although that would become unnecessary If the Forty Niners upset the Packers next Satur day afternoon. the Baltimore Colts defeat ed the Minnesota Vikings, 41-10 in Sunday's other game. The Steelers overcame an early 9-0 deficit Sunday with the help of Brown's second-pe riod touchdown passes to Bud dy Dial and Preston Carpenter, but fell . behind 19-17 on Sam Baker's 46-yard field goal and a four-yard touchdown run by Don Meredith in the third period. Rogue River Chiefs Nip Crater JV CENTRAL POINT Gary Frantz's shot from the corner with five seconds left gave the Rogue River High basketball varsity a 55-54 nod over the Crater junior varsity here Sat urday night. Crater sophomores won 57-51 from Rogue River junior varsity in the other game. The Chieftain regulars over came a nine-point deficit in the closing quarter. Crater headed 46-37 going into the panel. The Comets also were in front 32-29 at the half after a 14-all first quarter. Larry Branch of Crater was the game's high point man with 17. Dave Harper had 11 points and 20 rebounds for the Comets. Ray Powell scored 16 points for Rogue River and Gus Schef strom 12. The Comet sophs led 16-5, 23-18 and 39-37 at the quarters. Mike Turner had 17 points and 20 rebounds for Crater and Stan Shope 15 counters. David Lee had 17 markers for Rogue River. Crater shot .442 from the field and RR .375. The game will be played at El Paso, Tex., Dec. 31, in a new 30,000 seat stadium. Oregon finished the regular season with a 7-3 mark while SMU was 4-6. Invitation Of Big Six Due Soon PORTLAND (UPI) - Oregon and Oregon State will be in vited to join te Big Six some' time next month, the Oregonian said today. The newspaper quoted "an un impeachable source" as saying the Big Six presidents have completed preliminary moves and that final arrangements for expansion may come soon after the New Year s Day o o w 1 games. There has been talk for some time that the two schools, once members of the Pacific Coast Conference, would rejoin the six other former PCC members in a new eight-member loop. victory over Gator Bowl - bound Air Froce. Oregon played Southern Methodist in the 1949 Cotton Bowl game with SMU winning 21-13. Coach Len Casanova said the coaching staff was looking for ward to the post-season contest, "We have the deepest respect for Coach Hayden Fry and his team," Casanova said. Oregon will play the game without halfback Mel Renfor who signed a professional con tract last Friday with the Dal las Cowboys of the National football league. (UPI) -San Jose state played a waiting game in the first half and then pulled slowly away from Univer sity of Portland in the second stanza to defeat the Pilots 74-61 Saturday night. The Spartans led by a mea ger two points, 26-24, at inter mission but widened the margin to as much as 14 in the waning minutes ot uie game. Cincy Powell of Portland led all scorers with a 22 points and collected 18 rebounds to pace his teammates. San Jose state defeated the pilots Friday night, 58-56. Butte Falls Subdues Days Creek BUTTE FALLS - Butte Falls High rallied from a first quarter deficit to down Days Creek 52 42 Saturday in a non-league bas ketball game at Days Creek. Days Creek was on top 14 to 8 at the quarter and Butte Falls 25-19 and 43 to 32 at uie otner intermissions. Ron Sizemore had 13 points and Ron Smith 11 for the vic torious Loggers. (UPD- Carmine Tilelli today became manager of Joey Giardello, the brand new world middleweight champion, and when pilot Car mine congratulated Joey upon the deal, the manager found himself talking to himself be cause they are the same person. Giardello, who was christened Carmine Tilelli back in 1930 and still lives outside the ring as Tilelli, sent a check for $10, 000 today to his attorney Mike Del Collo in nearby Philadel phia for purchase of his man ager's contract from Arman Lorenzi of Philadelphia. That $10,000 was a major nart of Joey's purse from Sat urday's title-winning fight with Nigerian Dick Tiger at the At lantic City Convention Hall. His purse was estimated at $12,000. Arrangements for purchase of the contract were made before 33-year-old Joey won the 160 pound crown from 34-year-old Tiger on reteree raui Lava tier's 15-round decision, 8-5-2. There are no boxing judges in New Jersey.
