It served gas to the cities of Medford, Phoenix, Talent and Ashland. The original plant, wnicn was located at tills site, brought gas to Southern Oregon in 1910. Gaslight Provides Welcoming Beacon One of the most reassuring sights on a stormy night Is the golden glow of a gaslight mark- ing a driveway entrance or standing as a welcoming beacon at the front door. ' . Only gaslights say "welcome" in such a gracious way. Even when other sources of illumina tion fail, gaslights continue to operate. One reason is that gas flows through copper tubing buried underground, unaffected by rain, snow or heavy winds. This ex plains why airports, restaurants, shopping ccntors and other com mercial establishments have been turning in Increasing num bers to this source of outdoor illumination. Homeowners, too, like the de pendability of gaslights and find them decorative as well. There are numerous styles to choose from in keeping with the archi tecture of the home from old Colonial to ultra-modern. New Air Conditioning Methods Using Gas Now Are Available New methods of year-round home air conditioning using gas for both heating and cooling are now on the market. They in clude numerous advancements in design and performance to provide compactness, ease of Installation - and lower operat ing costs. . Forced ' warm air systems using -gas furnaces are partic ularly adaptable to addition of central cooling, and manufac turers have conducted extensive dealer training programs in this field. Water chilling units are made for use with hot water heat systems. t Gas is figurine in an increas ingly wide variety of all-year air conditioning equipment. An all-gas absorption-type . u n 1 1 both heats and cools and, in its latest models, combines in creased cooling capacity with smaller size. Gas furnaces also are being teamed with power cooling sys tems, and among the newest developments is use of a gas engine in a soundproof cabinet outside the house to activate the cooling system. There are many aspects of a central air conditioning job that can be handled even while the heating system is in full use. Such scheduling will be impera tive in view of increased de mand, slates the American Gas To the people of Medford in luck with You're to town! gas coming Now you can enjoy comfort heating with economy. Basements blossom into recrea tion rooms, kitchens become centers of family living and porches take on a hew useful ness the year around. Often the miracle of modern living is achieved simply by adding new gas appliances, the American Gas Association points out. The new gas ranges, dry ers, furnaces, water heaters, re frigerators, incinerators, air conditioners and dishwashers in crease comfort and convenience a thousand-fold and enable the homeowner to make better use of existing floor space. Replacement of a bulky, out moded furnace with a compact new gas unit no larger than a file cabinet permits the home owner to convert the basement! Association, despite the fact that many plumbing and heat ing dealers nave been expanding uieir stans to meet .this new need. To help understand the basic types of gas central air condi tioning equipment, the Ameri can Gas Association offers the following brief description of each: - Packaged combination heating-cooling: This is a compact arrangement of all heatine and cooling features in one housing. inciuaea are condensing sec tion, evaporator, fan or water pump, burner and automatic controls. It is usually called a year-round system because it provides cooling in summer and heating in winter. The change over from heating to cooling is completely automatic. ; Installation, can be made in the basement or utility room or wherever convenient for hook up with the duct-work or piping system. Matched packages of heating and cooling: Here the heating and cooling sections are divided into separate units, designed so that one can be added to the other. Usually the heating sec tion is the basic unit and in cludes the fan or water pump and the main automatic control system, as well as the furnace, or boiler. The cooling section contains the condensing section and evaporator. When added to the heating section, the combined unit functions much like the packaged heating-cooling unit described above. Heating with add-on package cooling; Many homes have ex cellent heating systems that were installed without special provision for adding cooling later. To meet this need, cool ing systems have been designed for addition to existing heating plants. Most add-on cooling units take advantage of the fan or water pump and the basic controls already on the heating unit and use it for the cooling operation as well. Usually, however, the fan output must be increased. With cooling added, the com bined system functions in much the same manner as the two systems mentioned. Heating-cooling systems with remotely located condensing section: In this arrangement, the major mechanical part of the refrigeration unit is located away - from tne nesting plant. The condensing section can be mounted out-of-doors, in the ga- race. or anv similar location It is connected to the evapo rator hy tubing through which the refrigerant flows. The evaporator (cold section) is mounted in the ductwork whrre it can chill the air. The system provides heating and j cnotinc In much the same man- j ncr as the previously described systems. State Legislature Sets Session Mark SALEM (UPI) -The legisla ture has established a record. Sen. Edward Fadclcy, D-Eu-gene, pointed out the legisla ture has been in session this year longer than any other in the state's history. Monday was the UMh legisla tive day Ml for the regular session, and eighth for the spe cial session. The record was held by the 1937 session which was in regu lar wssiimi 1-0 uavs, ami in ' m mm f jft - j special sessions 19 days - 1171 J)0. Central 1 day in all. t I j into ' an attractive recreation room or workshop. ., : A glass-enclosed porch . can become a four-season room completely independent of out side weather, thanks to gas heating and air conditionine equipment. If the porch is on the second floor, it can become an extra bedroom or sitting room. And it will be useful in winter as well as summer. A kitchen that is extra large and inefficient gains new use fulness and pleasure when com bined with a family room and laundry center. Too small a kitchen can often be expanded by removing a partition and merging the kitchen with the dining area. Smartly styled gas appliances in a wide variety of colored enamel and the new plastic wood finishes blend Der- fectly with cabinets and other furnishing. . ' PUBLIC NOTICE , ...
