FRIDAY, NOVEMBER IS, 1963 MEDFOKD MAIL TRIBUNE, MEDEORD, OREGON Bedford Tussles Tonight in Grid Gigantic on Roseburg High Field Oregon's Class A-l defending champion against we must a dethroned the stale s No, ranked big school football team against an adversary rated No, 2. That's the grid fare on one field or battle tonight as tne gridiron season rolls into the opening round of playoffs for championship of the Beaver state. Mcdford's Black Tornado will be the guest of the Indians of Roseburg High in one of four weekend Class A-l quarterfi nals. Whistle for the kickoff will blast at B p. m. This will be the Hurricane's first varsity grid venture on the Roseburg field Since 1955. Tonight's encacemcnt in the Umpqua Valley city has been billed as the top quarterfinal in the state. Winner of the con flict will be favored to go on and claim the 1963 crown. Indians Eye Requital Roseburg ambition is requital. IwiiTii'ff'TI knocked out of the 1962 running 14-7 here in quarterfinals by the Black Tornado which fought on to the titular trophy. Medford now goes to Roseburg in the same precarious position as were the Indians when they warpathed here last fall. Tonight's victor will march into semifinals against either Grant or West Linn. Those two teams are combatants Saturday afternoon. In other A-l quarter finals Beaverton is at Parkrose tonight and North Salem at Pendleton tomorrow afternoon. Metropolitan area forecasts give the nods to Roseburg, Bea verton and Grant and are split between North Salem and Pend leton for these first round elimination games. Roseburg is picked over Med ford despite the Whirlwind'! one step higher rating in all three final polls. The Indians did lead the tabulations several weeks and will fight tonight on home ground. Billed Equal At Roseburg, the titanic tangle has been billed a tossup. Roseburg News-Review Writer Niel Cellers said, "Medford and Roseburg go into the contest rated as equals. Ho also remarked, "All the chips will be down, and fans can bet that all the stops will De pulled out Dy both teams." Wet weather likely will ham per the normal operations of both clubs. Victory may go to the club which adjusts best in wet and mud and which best takes advantage of the breaks. Roseburg, exponent of the belly series with its deceptive plays, will bank on the running and passing of Quarterback Jim Beamer and Halfback Smo key Burgess, the running of Fullbacks Mike Leep and Craig Engle and the pass catching of Halfback Ron Leep and Ends Gary Heeter and Doug Matson. Quarterback Jerry Remick is another passer for coach Roy Thompson's team. Beamer has been the Mid- wostern League top passer and Burgess nas been a top runner and Heeter a top recoiver in the circuit. Plenty of Talent While the Indians have been impressive in compiling an 8-1 season standing, Medford has plenty ot talent going for it too Quarterback Mike Barnes also can run and nass. There's now. er in the packing of Fullback Bill Enyart and Halfback Tim Murray and breakaway ability In Halfbacks Greg Gandce and Jim Cox. And, Fullback Greg uippei nas aone a snare of tot ing for coach Fred Spiegel- oerg s aggregation. The hurling of Barnes, Half back Larry Vowell and Quarter backs Jack Mullen and Rich Knight and receiving of Ends Steve Toews and Walt Verstratc and Cox, Gandce, Vowell and Murray give Medford an air threat which must be reckoned with. Up front across the line for Medford along with Toews and Verstratc to make the offense go are the likes of Tackles Jeff Hardralh and Bob Mothvln, Guards Chip Buffington and Chuck Kimball and Center Ed Coss. Battling to restrain the In-j dians will be such forward wall men as Lynn Flanders, Murray, Tom Woolon, John Pierce, Hardralh, Terry Winctroi'.t and Brian Petersen. Backing them will be such as Dippcl, George Dumcs and Dick Botlger with Lance Cnsebeer, Knight and Ron Edmonds In deep second ary posts. There arc other capable hands in reserve. No Common For ! Cnsebeer, who broke up a ' pass in a key late game situa tion against Grants Pass last jweck, will contend against old teammates tonight. He trans- fcrrcd to Medford from Rose burg at the start of this school year. Medford (7-1) captured the Southern Oregon Conference and District 6 mantle with a 4-0 record. Roseburg shared the Midncstern and District 6 toca with Cottage Grove which it de- lealcd during the league season , Roseburg and Medford did not meet a common rival through whom they might be compared. Medford and Roseburg once had an annual football rivalry going. It was abandoned after 1115b by Ihe Indians and the schools did not meet again on ilhc gridiron until the playoffs made it necessary last year. Medford mentor Spicgclberg reported thai the Tornado "boat the rain" and had a "real good workout" yesterday. The squad was to cat at North's rhimlr Wagon at 4 p. m. today before heading to the scene of action. During October, Koski said final releases of fingerling trout were made to most lakes, and some grade-out aslmon and steelhead were released.
