' Pitching has been the Cardin j als' most serious problem all : season but it's suddenly jelled and just at the right time if the Redbirds are going to overtake the Dodgers, whose once - proud staff is beginning to get the blind staggers in the stretch. The Cardinal staff turned in '. its third consecutive shutout when Ray Sadecki and Ron Tay : tor combined in a five - hitter . Wednesday night for a 4-0 vic tory over the Chicago Cubs. The : win enabled the Cardinals to re main three games behind the : winning Dodgers and made it 14 victories in their last IS games for Johnny Keane's fast closing team. The Dodgers again got shaky pitching from ace Don Drysdale ; but reached into their bullpen for the necessary relief aid as they downed the Pittsburgh Pi rates, 9-4, and eliminated them from the race. Sandy Koufax is the only Dodger pitcher who has gone the distance in the 11 games played by Los Angeles this runs in three innings but Pete month. During the same period the Cardinals have had six com plete games from among three different pitchers. Giants Lose Again The New York Mets pushed the fading San Francisco Giants another step toward extinction, 4-2, the Cincinnate Reds routed the Milwaukee Braves, 14-3, and the Houston Colts nicked the Philadelphia Phillies, 4-2 in oth er National league games. Sadecki went 5 2-3 innings to win his ninth game for the Car dinals, with Taylor holding the Cubs to one hit over the final 3 1-3. Amateur golf championship with a quartet of them to be left in the running ' by nightfall. Officials of major league clubs Tuesday closed a two-day special meeting on possible re alignment of top classification minor leagues, but results of the sessions were not disclosed. However, one person present Indicated the American associa tion reactivation was discussed and turned down. Tonight the final game in Spo kane will be played with Ben Johnson, a 32 - year - old right handcr taking the mound for the 8Dcrs while the host Indians will start 23-year-old Phil Ortega. Johnson, during the regular sea son had a record of 11 vicotries and 9 defeats and Oretga had 13-9. The clube will use Friday to travel and resume the series Saturday night at Oklahoma City. The Indians came through with a single run in the ninth in ning Wednesday night to take a 3-2 decision and knot the best of seven series. John Wcrhas drove in relief hurler Dick Scott, who had doubled, with the de cisive run. Both men shared the hero roles. Scott took the mound in the seventh inning and didn't al low Oklahoma City a hit. Richert held the Pirates to two runs for four innings and Ron Perranoska closed it out with two innings of hitless relief Smokey Burgess homered for the Pirates. Wills showed his 1962 style Wednesday night as he led the Los Angeles Dodgers to a 9-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pi rates by stealing two bases, smacking four hits in five trips to the plate and participating in three double plays. Wills hit three singles and a double, stole his 31st and 32nd bases of the season, scored three runs and batted in two more runs as the Dodgers held their three - game margin over the hard charging St. Louis Cardinals. This Could Be Day Yankees Cinch Tie Bv FRED DOWN This could be the day the New York Yankees clinch a tie for their fourth straight American league pennant and the 28th in their golden history. All that's needed is a Yankee victory over the Kansas City Athletics and a Cleveland In dian triumph over the Minne sota Twins. Then, one Yankee victory or one loss by either the Twins or Chicago White Sox would mathematically elimi nate the last two remaining "contenders." Harmon Killebrew hit his 38th homer of the season and the fifth grand slam of his career and Earl Battey also homered to lead the Twins' 13-hit attack.
