DOYLE United Press International Portland, Ore - IUP1) - When the 2,250 students who attend Marshall High school here re sume classes next fall, they will become part of an "exper iment" in secondary educa tion. - , Gone will be the static 55 minute periods, dry lectures, day to day scheduling and, perhaps most important to the students, the constant supervision. . At the base of the year long pilot program are two tried methods: flexible sched uling and team teaching. Both have been tried only in lim ited areas of curricula and on a limited scale, nowever. But Marshall's program, like that of four other schools around the country, will in volve all students, all the teachers. It is the largest of five schools in the experiment to inaugurate what is called "modular flexible schedul ing," and the one educators will be watching. This is the big revolution," said Dr. Gaynor Petrequin, principal. Under the present system, there are five 55 . minute per iods with a sixth period for study, all closely supervised. Under the new plan,, a stu dent will register each morn ing and then go to his first period, but instead of 55 min utes, it might be 20 minutes, or 40, 60, or 80. It will be a "module" or a series of mod ules - 20-minute time periods. Few classes will be shorter than 40 minutes. In an instance in which one module is used, it will in clude 16 minutes for work and four-minutes to go to the next part of the day's pro gram. One - modoule classes will be used almost without exception for Individual proj ects. Dr. . Petrequin said that workers who planned the School Bells Ring Heavy Traffic Toll Bv IPPOMP. ttRAUSE United Prats International Chicago - niro - School hplls will sisnal danger of death and injury in traffic accidents lor tne 43 million young Americans headed back to classrooms. The National Safety coun cil reports that accidents cause more deaths among children 1 to 14 than the five nthpr leadina causes of death combined. In 1062, 4,- 322 children in tne 1-14 age Broun died in traffic accidents across the nation. Among high school and college students, more than half of the accidental deaths are due to mishaps. What can the average driv er1 do to halt the resumption ot the slaughter on the roads? The safety council recom mends a three-point program. -Be ready ior me unex pected whenever you see a nf children in a school yard or near a street. Base balls, basketballs, and 1001 balls take strange bounces, and make children forget about oncoming traffic. -Give yourself an even greater margin for safety in ralnv i winter weather. when streets are slick and it becomes much harder to stop quickly. -Whnther schools are in session or not, keep your car I II I A K I 1111 I - BIG SIDEWALK BARGAINS! In addition to its campaign for the prevention of deaths in traffic accidents, the coun cil has urged better fire pro tection in schools, more school bus control and safety, and continued expansion of driver education courses in the high schools. The council urges' all school districts to install, au tomatic sprinkler systems as well as fire extinguishers and firm alarms. As the result of an extensive testing program the council found that no fire alarm system was universally satisfactory. Nearly 43 million children will use school buses daily this year. School officials stress that the students' safe ty depends much on the be havior of passengers. Pupils should board buses without delay, but without crowding or pushing. They should be urged to follow the driver's directions promptly and will ingly. Old Swedish Firm Enters U. 5. Market New York - (UPD - Bofors, a name known to many Ameri cans in connection with its anti-aircraft guns, announced that its NOHAB subsidiary has entered the U. S. market for the first time with an award of a $3.2 million order by the city of Seattle for four water turbines. - The 330-year-old firm, nnre owned by Dr. Alfred Nobel, now is one of Sweden's most diversified firms. Once known primarily for its ordnance products, Bofors and its sub sidiaries manufacture a wide range of products from steel to plastic tubes and chemicals, including drugs and pharma ceutical preparations . Wraps To Fit 9490 If It project hit upon the 20 min ute time period for maximum flexibility after studying per iods of 15 and 30 minutes. The student, then, might be gin his day with that one module of individual work, or two modules of history, or three for chemistry. What it will mean In actual practice to the student is a half hour more of school day, 60 minutes more each week to pursue projects the student "wants to follow, more se lectivity in choosing elective subjects and more individual determination in his own edu But most important to the student: He will be consider ed an adult and capable of this academic responsibility. "It's a bit of a chance," Dr. Petrequin said. "Students are still super vised as thoroughly as they were in the first grade," he said. He believes this is wrong. Regimented restriction does not ideally prepare students for college where they will have to work, act and think independently, he noted. Under the projected pro gram, students will gather in small discussion groups pursuing studies with fellow students of similar interest and aptitude. Dr. Petrequin calls the small - discussion group the "heart of the pro gram.'' . : The other main components are the lecture and laboratory group. ' Record Labs ' "Resource centers" In which small groups will work include work rooms, libraries, film and record labs. Lectures, under maximum flexible scheduling, can be given to 90 students at one time,' instead of to groups of 30 students three times. Films can be similarly scheduled. Flexible scheduling on a large scale is a project of such complexity it cannot be done manually. Stanford Uni versity developed the compu ter program that will place the students - and the teach ers - In the most advantageous niches. Stanford spent three years developing the program, and when it came as close to an answer as it could without a live experiment, it invited five high schools in different regions to participate. Best Teachers The flexible scheduling theory includes using the best of teachers. In terms of every day work, this could mean that a teacher with a talent for organization, but also a talent for putting students to sleep in classes, will be used for curricula planning. A teacher with a dynamic presentation will lecture. Also, at the teacher level of the program, more non professional workers will be used, and it is hoped that ulti mately fewer teachers will be needed to accomplish the same, or more effective re sults. The professional instructor will spend his time in the strictly professional task of teaching and counseling and "para - professionals" and clerical workers will do the other tasks. Dr. Petrequin, and his fel low educators, hope - and , expect - Marshall High school to lay the blueprint for future educational programs, a new direction in teaching. The aim: finding new, and more certain paths, to that wonderful and hungry con sumer of truth - the young mind. . Fashion's favorite skirt bold pocketed and back-wrapped!
