r MEOFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFGIt. OREGON leather Is Important To Casual Fashion Look THURSDAY, AUGUST 22, 1963 Fashion is on a casual kick wis tali, and it's leather . leather . . . leather for clothes xnai are iresh, informal and just piain lun. With the "suburban look' capturing fashion headlines across the country, the popu- -wijr ut learner garments is sreaier man ever this season, Designed with flair and mi. ored by hues reflected from the autumn scene, carefree coats, jackets, dresses and en- semoies are seen in a wide va riety of handsome smooth, grained, and softly sueded leathers. A favorite lighweight con tender this fall is the three quarter length coat in either smooth or suede leather. Fin gertip or full length, leather coats look more gothic in shape, offer more freedom of movement. Tailored and belted models are more in evidence than last year and detailing is simpler -whether on collars, pockets or belts. Always smart, suede is im portant in all lengths this year, sharing popularity with grained and smooth leather apparel. Softly supple feath erlight suede, cardigans for the suburban matron or grained belted jackets for the city girl are seen in a variety of browns - from sun gold through beige to chocolate. Other favorite leather hues this fall include the grayed greens, blue-from powder to royal - and red from blush tones all the way to orange. In Many Styles Wrap coats, chiefly seen in the daytime in grained and smooth leathers, are also widely available in velvety suedes-more of which come out after dark; Large collars and broader self-leather belts frame the neat figure at every hour. Tunic suits, ideal for fall weather, feature slightly long er overjackets. Leather skirts mold to the figure, with slits providing free - swinging leg room. Tailored leather jackets and blazers are teamed with colorful mohairs, soft cash' Four Basic Suit Styles for Men This fall a ' man can be handsomely suited in any one of tour basic suit styles, each one with many variations. First, although not neces sarily the most popular, is the American Natural marked by moderation in line and fit. Second is the Traditional, with natural shoulder, which in Hs extreme is the Ivy. Third is the Contemporary. The most outstanding feature of this style is the clean line with emphasis on neck-hugging collars and a firm well tailored look at the chest areas. The fourth is the American Ambassador which has con cave shoulder lines, "forward pitch" sleeves and "side bod ies." This latter term applies to seams which start at the arm scythes of the coat and extend downward through the pocket area to the bottom of the jacket. Possibly the most popular suit will have natural shoul ders, a fuller chest, normal lapels, limit of waist, sugges tion of flare, and a restrained cutaway front. One "off beat" suit comes with a one-button coat and a double-breasted jacket. Most suits will be lighter and trimmer than in the past, and more vests will be shown as part of the suit. An important look in all styles will be the "dressed up casuals" . or "dressed - down business suits." The fabric used often makes the difference. Tweeds, shetlands and chev iots are being widely shown in suits; herringbone and houndstooth will be very im portant. Glen plaid too takes top honors for fall. meres and rough- tweeds in casual ensembles. Ski and apres-ski leather outfits feature smooth ankle- length pants topped by big, lined suede or smooth leather parkas or jackets. In a variety of styles, leather garments are adapted to all-weather use through the addition of nat ural wool shearling linings. Shifts - in easy flowing grain leather or clinging suede-make breath-taking af ternoon dresses. Deep autumn tones, chiefly in browns and greens, make these timeless leather styles smart up-to-the- minute fashions. In the evening, the suede coat takes on more detailing, richer tones and more beauti fully napped textures. Suede wraps are trimmed in furs, while smooth leathers take on the sparkle of occasional jew eling and the shine of a big buckle on a broad, wandering belt. The leather cape is a fa miliar silhouette in the after theatre crowd. . Less Cosmetics Suggested for Fall When fall's chill winds be gin to blow, the social calen dar naturally calls, for more time at home. And designers this year have gone all out to make sure m'lady is as pretty by the fireside as at a ball. Beauty and comfort go hand-in-hand in these new "at home" clothes. Shapes are easy, but feminine. And legs are almost disappearing, with the most popular styles fall ing to ankle or floor lengths. Sportive" is the big word here, as it is with the rest of this fall's fashions. Shirts in unusual fabrics, such as me tallic plaids and wool prints- sleeveless coats over pants or pajamas-vests with culottes- quilted wrap skirts -shifts -furs of all kinds, real or fake -all fit the "at home" picture. To make the most of these MINK FOR DAY OR EVENING This natural blue-grey mink expresses the most important trend in furs casual ele gance. To gain this look, luxurious fur is worked horizon tally; a large, rolling collar is set well away from the neck, and pockets are set between the pelts. By Constantine of Christie Brothers. Of course, only a pampered skin will have a natural radi ance. One of the best ways to baby your complexion is with light fingertip facial-massages, using a deodorant soap with germicidal ingredients. Then use the light touch with cosmetic s-cspecially eye make-up. Knitted Dresses Need Proper Foundation B 3 Don't Include yourself "out" of the knitted class just because your figure doesn't classify as petite. For the first time this season there are foundations proportioned to fit not only the average, but the mature figure as well. . Designers for Gossard who have just completed a collec tion of "Narrolines for knits" have these suggestions to of fer on selecting shapemakers: If you have a full hipped figure, don't expect a seam less roll-on to do the job of slimming you. Look for a gir dle or pantie that is propor tioned to your own hip size. Hips are a key measurement in knit underlining, because while most of the soft cotton Helpful Hints Given for Nails The well-groomed woman is meticulous about her per sonal cleanliness, hair care, and make-up. But too often hands -though they are al ways on view-get nothing but a hasty weekly manicure. Not all hands are beautifully shaped-but all can be flaw lessly groomed. Medically supervised re search show that fingernail defects are common in healthy persons and may be cleared up by a daily use of an envelope of unflavored gelatine-the same kind you find on your supermarket shelf. You can take your finger nail treatment in a variety of pleasant ways. The unflavor ed gelatine goes into fruit juice, milk, or bouillon. Many women take theirs with the morning juice. Simply pour in. the unflavored gela tine, stir briskly, and drink at once. The treatment should con tinue from 60 to 90 days, the amount of time required for Patterned Ties Gain in Importance What kind of tie goes with the stripe shirt that is so fav ored for fall? Well, there is a wide choice so long as it is patterned. Pat tern with pattern is all-important. . There are ties with vertical stripes, with diagonal stripes, with small over-all patterns, with subdued patterns, but always it is pattern. So, save these solid color ties for extra-dressy occasions to wear with white shirts or put them away for another year! the growth of new nails. Don't settle for a garment that controls, but writes its formula all over the knitted fashion by show-through seam lines. Look for garments that are sewn with pancake flat seams, and still offer split-hip controls. The "split hip," a favorite narrowing control, is techni cal language for an elastic panel over the hipline with its stretchability limited by a long finger of fabric. Get a light weight garment, and look first for one in Ly cra or other spandcx fibers. If your thighs are a problem. don't expect a table cloth to hide the bulge when you sit down. Try a long legged pan tie "irdle with split-hip con trols almost all the way down the leg. V won t uuy too tight a gar ment. Buy one that fits you, and in which you'll be com fortable. Knitwear tells , all its secrets, and if you have a curve that's been pushed to another area by a too-tight garment, it's sure to show up. Finally, don't buy a cling ing slip. Look for a half or whole slip with a "taffeta" feel to provide all the inner status you need for knitted class.
