Reason: It expects Congress Red Soldier Group Has Gas Troubles Berlin -(UPD- A group of Russian soldiers stationed in Communist East Germany de. cided to take a sightseeing tour of West Berlin Saturday in a bus. The bus ran out of gas twice. It stalled first on Clay allee near the U. S. military head. ouarters. The Russians said they had no money, except for some East German currency that no one here would accept. A Russian-speaking West ' Berlin woman finally helped She bought a can of gas with her own money, and tha bus sputtered off to the border. It got' about a mile away from Checkpoint Charlie when the engine quit again. This time, West German po lice drove to the checkpoint, and shouted . to Communist guards for a gallon or so of gas for the bus. The Communists either didn't understand or weren't interested in helping. : Another West Berliner then dug into his pockets, came up with enough cash for another can of fuel, and tha bus chug ged back across the iron cur tain. East German Border Guard Makes Escape Berlin - (WD - A 22-year-old East German border guard escaped into the British sec tor of the divided city Satur day night to seek asylum, West Berlin police said. Authorities said the Com munist guard slipped into West Berlin near the Bran' den burg gate and was appar ently not seen by fellow sol diers. They said he was in uni form and carried a aubma chlnegun. He was the latest of sev eral Communist guards who have defected since East Ger man authorities issued "shoot-to-kin" orders to soldiers as signed to prevent refugees from leaving East Berlin. Melon Seed Safes High in Noar East Philadelphia - (WD - The deep South is generally con sidered watermelon country. But one seed manufacturer says actually more melons are grown by the handful of coun tries in the Near East than in any other part of the world. The seed company reports sales of 75 tons of watermelon seed each year to the Near East countries. The rest of the world including the United States accounts for only 10 tons annually. These revenue forecasts - and the computation of the 16 to 20 per cent range in tax savings - were based solely on the committee's action in Lane County Man Presented Award Minneapolis, Minn. - (UPD - Lane County District Attor ney William F. Frye Friday was named recipient of the "Outstanding Prosecutor Award" of the National Dis trict Attorneys association. '. The presentation of the award was made Saturday at the end of the organization's annual meeting. The association said the award recognizes Frye's con tribution to the public through participation in community and state affairs, his profes sional achievements as a law yer and prosecutor, and his service to the organization. Frey, 34, has been vice pres ident of the group for two years and la editor of its nub lication, "Hearsay." The association is made up of 1,300 members. Oakland Summer Program Popular Oakland, Calif.- (UPD -The city of Oakland has 1.10 teen age boys working this sum mer in its tenth annual "Workreation" program. The boys, all students In junior or senior high school, each have three-week stints during which they work four hours a day for various city departments and then receive four hours of instruction. The pay is $1 for an hour of work and the instruction includes career counseling, nature lore and lectures by civic leaders. Karl Glos, head of the 196 member employers' bargain ing group, said "We may be approaching the end of this thing." The proposed pact calls for approving revision in the for mula for taxing capital gains. They assume that individual tax rates - to which the for mula is linked - will remain at existing levels. But an across the board cut in individual tax rates is the prime ingredient of the administration-backed tax bill which the committee is draft ing. $10 Billion Savings The committee plans to add this final ingredient this week in wrapping up a tax package that is expected to provide net tax savings of close to $10 billion for individuals and corporations in two annual steps starting next Jan. 1. Friday's action will boost the total tax savings on profits from sale of property held for at least two years appreciably above 20 per cent for almost every seller. The exception will be those who, under the new schedule, still find themselves in a tax bracket of 50 per cent or high er. Only the latter would be limited to tax relief of 16 per cent on their sale profits. Ike Visits Scene Of French Landings Caen, France - (UPD - Ex- President Dwight D. The ship was scheduled to leave Le Havre at 2 p.m. For three days, Eisenhower worked before Columbia Broadcasting System cameras as the key figure in a docu mentary film about the his toric D-day landings on June 6, 1B44. He revisited the now-"hcid beaches where AllicJ troops fought to gain the foothold In western Europe which marked the beginning of the end for the Nazis. Referendum Set The settlement, if ratified by 3,000 members of the IWA and LSW who work at the three companies, would send 1,500 men back to work at struck Santiam and Pope and Talbot plants. Willamette Val ley operations have not been struck. Referendum ballots on the proposed contract will be sent to the three firms' union em ployes during the weekend and counted on Tuesday. The agreement came after representatives of the unions and Georgia-Pacific Corp. reached agreement Thursday on a pact for three years. The proposed agreement calling for an approximate 30'4-cent hourly raise for the next three years must be rat ified by union members at Georgia-Pacific plants. About 5,000 men were idled State Parks Due To Be Inspected Salem -(WD- Oregon's state parks will be inspected by Na tional Parka Service Director Conrad Wirth this week. Wirth and representatives of three other federal agencies will accompany the State Parks and Recreation Advis ory committee and State High way Department officials on the three day trip starting Monday. Other federal agencies which will have representa tives on the tour include the Bureau of Land Management, U. S. Forest Service and Bu reau of Outdoor Recreation. The bus tour will begin in Portland and will be routed up the Columbia River high way. , It will go south to Bend, Crater lake, Klamath Falls, Grants Pass and end at Med ford Wednesday afternoon. Members will inspect de velopments at Cove Palisades State Park, the Prineville res ervoir recreation area and overnight camping units un der construction in Collier Park, Crater lake, Valley of the Rogue and Diamond lake. Hatfield Speaks At Dedication of Dam Vale -(UPD- Gov. Mark Hat field said completion of the Bully Creek dam and reser voir facility was a successful culmination of 80 years of ef fort on the part of local, state and federal Interests. Hatfield spoke at the dam dedication here Saturday morning. He praised the men and agencies who have worked on the plan for the project for many years, and said he would direct attention to the subject of reclamation. He said the subject was not frequently understood by per sons in the East and even by many congressmen. He said reclamation proj ects were multiple purpose. He said the Bully Creek Ex tension would provide flood control, fish, wildlife, and rec reation benefits. Hatfield said westerners should be continually on guard against future efforts to delay or halt reclamation projects through reference to surplus crops. Some 14,000 men returned to work this week at four Big Six companies, which ended a lockout. The lockout came June 7, two days after the unions struck the two other Big Six firms. Representatives of the un ions and the Big Six were scheduled to meet In a nego tiating session here Monday afternoon. No talks were scheduled between the unions and TOC. About 40 Italian photogra phers had kept vigil over Ford's yacht since Thursday night when It arrived in Por tofino on the Italian Riviera 34 miles east of Genoa. They were disappointed In their hopes of witnessing a meeting between Ford and Mrs. Austin, the attractive Italian - born widow whose name has been linked roman tically with his. Mrs. Austin, the widow of a British naval officer, was not sighted here. She left her Milan home a few days ago saying she was going to St. Moritz, Switzerland, but Ital ian newspapers speculated she would meet Ford in Porto fino. She told reporters in Milan that there was "only friend ship" between her and Ford, who recently announced his separation from his wife after 23 years of marriage. Ford's 187-ton yacht pulled into Portofino harbor Thurs day night in stormy weather and was briefly grounded while maneuvering to come to anchor. It was not known how soon the Santa Maria II would ar rive in Cannes, more than 130 miles southwest of Portofino along the Riviera coastline.
