The men and women who come to the Red Cross chap ter house, Medford, next Mon day and Tuesday to donate blood at the visit of the Red Cross bloodmobile will wit ness, as donors always have, a quiet and smooth running operation But Mrs. J. W. Burba, local blood program chairman said that few Medford donors realize the detailed planning that precedes a blood collec tion, the variety of work and equipment required to make a. blood collection efficient and successful The date of the collection is scheduled s e v er a 1 months ahead. This is done for sev- eral reasons, one of which is to fit the visit here in with those to other communities in this section of the state, for the bloodmobile from the Pa cific Northwest Red Cross re gional blood center at Port land is on the road for a full week before returning to its home base. Giv. Ampl. Tim Another reason for long- range scheduling is to give the chapter here ample time to choose the site for the visit and change the location if necessary for any reason. Most important of all, Mrs, Burba said, the chapter here must have time to recruit donors "That's where our work really begins," she said. "Our recruitment commit tee, headed by James Rowan, works for weeks before the visit writing letters to organ izations, service groups and business firms asking their cooperation in making this community effort a success, and telephoning and calling on prospective donors to urge them to give. It sometimes takes as many as six calls be fore we get one donor signed up. Volunteer Groups "Then, two or three weeks before the collection, the chairmen of our volunteer groups Gray Ladies, Staff Aides, Canteen and Motor Service begin getting work ers lined up to perform the various volunteer chores nec essary to making the collec tion a success. "Motor Service volunteers drive donors who live or work at a distance from Medford; Gray Ladies act as reception ists, and Staff Aides register the donors. "Our Canteen workers serve lunch to the mobile unit staff and light refreshments to the donors after they have given blood. Ordering the food is one of the advance du ties of Mrs. Conro Fiero, Can teen Service chairman." Non-Technical Phaie All this, she said, makes up the non-technical phase of getting the 350 pints of blood which are this community's quota on mobile unit visits. The technical work is done by the professional staff of the mobile unit from the Port- Try and Stop Mo -By BENNETT CERF- SENTENCED TO BE electrocuted, a hardened criminal finally cracked under the strain, and consulted the lawyer he had spurned previously, cneered the criminal. A physician also is present at every oper ation. Four local physicians volunteer their time to pro vide coverage during each day of the bloodmobile visit. Volunteer registered nurses of Medford help the mobile unit nurses. Under the phy sician's direction, the nurses take the medical history of donors, check their blood pressures and their hemoglo bin, and take the blood of donors who are physically eligible. Physicians supervise these activities and examine donors whose eligibility for physical reasons is in doubt. The custodian drives . the bloodmobile, the large truck containing the unit's equip ment, sees that the refrigerat ed chests in which the blood is stored are properly iced, and with the assistance of the volunteers at places of collec tion, unloads the equipment carried. A second automobile brings the nurses.' After the collection is fin ished, the blood is shipped back to the regional center either by small truck sent out from the center or by rapid commercial transportation. And, that." Mrs. Burba concluded, "is how it's done. It looks simple, but it takes a lot of work." At Chapter House The mobile unit will be at the Rod Cross chapter house, 60 Hawthorne ave Monday, Aug. 12, from 2 to 6 p.m. and again on Tuesday, Aug. 13, from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Persons between the ages of 18 and 59 are eligible to do nate, but those between the ages of 18 and 21 must have a written consent from their parents or guardian.
