(UPI) Miss Universe Competition Opens Miami Beach-(UPI) - Official competition in the 1063 Miss Universe contest opened to day with the preliminary round for 43 American beau tics shooting at the Miss U.S.A. titlo. Fifteen scmifinalists will be named from among the leggy American contingent tonight, and the winner will be crowned by Hawaii's Mar cel Wilson, reigning Miss U.S.A., Wednesday night. The winner will compete with girls from 48 foreign countries Thursday night in the preliminaries for the big title. Fifteen scmifinalists will be picked to compete Satur day for the Miss Universe title, The finals, to be viewed by a national television audience, will see the winner crown ed from among five finalists Saturday night. She will succeed Miss Nor ma Nolan of Argentina, reign ing Miss Universe. Former Legislator Dies at Depoe Bay , Depoe Bay UP1) James D. Abbott, a former Oregon leg islator who was prominent-in the printing industry in Port land for 50 years, died at his home near here Monday. He was 88. Abbott served as a state representative in the 1909, 1911 and 1913 sessions of the legislature. He was president of the Portland printing firm of James, Kerns and Abbott Co., now Abbott, Kerns and Bell Co. Dieting Woman Reaches 184 Pounds Los Angeles - lllPII - Mrs. Elaine Johnson, 30, who walk ed Into Wadsworth Veterans Administration hospital six months ago weighing 315 pounds, walked out Monday weighing 184 pounds. "I feel great," said Mrs. Johnson who existed lor 117 days on liquids and vitamin pills. Since May 25 when the ex treme diet was abandoned, Mrs. Johnson has existed on 300 calories a day. Now, she is up to 500 which is the equivalent of one poached egg, a slice of toast and tea for breakfast, a small piece of meat, tablespoon of vege table, lettuce salad and tea for lunch, and two poached eggs, bouillon and tea for din ner. But Mrs. Johnson empha sized the battle wasn't over yet: "It never will be because t'm a foodoholic."
