(UPI) Orders for Filing Subdivision Plats Signed by Orders for the filing of plats for two subdivisions in the Medford area were signed by the Jackson county court at the Monday meeting, called because of inability of court members to attend a meeting on the regular Friday date. Filed with the county re corder are the plats for Splen dor View subdivision, located in the area of Archer dr., Ala mar st. and Rio St.; and for Broadlands sub division, lo cated between Fairlane dr. and Griffin Creek rd. and south of South Stage rd. The court signed a lease with John McCabe of Med iord for a storage area in the Chrystal company building at 301 North Fir street for stor age of surplus foods. The lease for one year provides for rent payments of $270 a month. An appeal-from Charles A. Goddard seeking redemption of his property being adver tised for tax sale, was heard by the court and taken undej advisement. T. E. Thompson of Ashland came before the court asking for a waiver of the license fee Portland Woman Wins Gold Brick Portland-UPIl-A man called Mrs. Jeanetle Brearley -Sunday and wanted to know where he could deliver her $50,000 gold brick. "If you don't want the gold brick you can pick up $50,000 cash from the Bank of Mon treal," he added. "You won It on a $1 ticket in the Cal gary Stampede drawing." Mrs. Brearley said she bought the ticket when she went to Calgary for a family reunion last week. It wasn't her first winning. A jingle in a 1947 flour mill contest won her a new auto. A man at the Bank of Mon treal told her she could spend the money in Canada and not have to pay any taxes, but she thinks she'll take a trip to the Orient instead. "In fact, I might go all the way around the world. The way 1 feel now I wouldn't even need a plane." iannn Rite, ARMLESS COUPLE WEDS-Mr. and Mrs. Martin Rcvcllctc, both born armless, pose for their wedding picture following a ceremony near Live Oak, Fla. Opening night for the Shakespearean Festival is July 24 in Ashland. Even though this leaves nearly 60 per cent of the total availability yet to be reserv ed, patrons have been urged by General Manager William Patton to complete their the ater plans as early as possible. Opening night is sold out, but good seating remains for all other performances. Current figures indicate that advance sales are still running ahead of last year and close to the all-time record year of 1961, when 47,734 persons filled the Elizabethan Theater to 99 per cent of its 42-night capacity. Because 1963 productions will run for a longer period of time than ever before, 46 nights compared to 44 nights last year, it is Impossible to parallel percentages with complete accuracy; but the totals do give valid evidence of brisk early sales, officials noted. Compara to Past At this same time in 1961, $52,753 worth of reservations had been made, $44.8 per cent of full-run capacity. Last year, in July, $43,849 had been tab ulated, 34 per cent of the po tential. Mail orders, Ashland window sales, and the branch box office network all Indi cate a rising interest in the Festival's 23rd season of Shakespeare under the Ore gon stars. Meantime, rehearsals have entered their final phases. Technical and costume crews are working around the clock to mount the four plays in time for, four sucessive open ing nights: July 24 through 27. Following the four pre mieres, the repertory will then rotate nightly until Sep tember 7. Ticket inquiries may be made by writing "Shake speare," Ashland, Ore., or by visiting a branch agency. Tickets in this area are avail able at Mann's Department store. Sam Wilderman Becomes Democrat Portland -IUPU- Former state representative Sam Wilder man today changed his regis tration from Republican to Democrat. Wilderman's switch cli maxed a long feud within the Republican party which re sulted in refusal of a Multno mah county convention to en dorse him for reelection in 1962. He subsequently was beaten In the party primary. Wilderman blamed the "John Birchcrs within the Republican party" for his dif ficulty. "When the Birchers took over the Young Republicans at their convention in San Francisco, that was the final straw," Wilderman said. He handled publicity for such Republican figures as the late Douglas McKay, Guy Cordon, Alt L a n d o n and Thomas E. Mother Nature has used a pretty good system of cooling for uncounted centuries. She was using it ages before man appeared on this earth and is still doing so. The sign that reads; "It's 20 degrees cooler inside," is an inviting bit of information to a person when the temperature is high and a comfortable feeling when we enter such a place. Visualize, for a moment, a beehive in the direct rays of a summer sun. Did you ever wonder how the tiny insects could and work in what would seem to be an oven? It would seem that such a heat would liquify the stored honey if nothing was done to bring down the temperature. Perhaps you have never given it a thought. However, the bee keeper has made no provision for ventilating the hive as the bees themselves take care of this human over sight In a most satisfactory manner. Bees have been air conditioning their homes for millions of years. Complicated Organisation Within the hive is a very complicated organization. The bee colony is systematically set up so that every individual of the. swarm works for the betterment of the commun ity. Divided into workers, guards, egg producers, and en gineers, all personnel cooper ate as one unit. When the summer sun beats relentlessly on the hive, the sole purpose of the work er bees becomes the ventila tion of the structure. It is their job to keep a current of fresh air moving to every part of the hive, all day and all night If necessary. The stationary insects, the workers, fan their wings rap idly, creating a current of air with each line of bees push ing the air to the next line, until the air of the entire hive is in motion. Thermostatic Control As the temperature rises outside, the wing beat of the bee motors accelerates to a high crescendo. If the air with out cools, the fanning dimin ishes. Therefore, the bees themselves maintain some sort of thermostatic control to maintain a constant tempera ture. The work Is arduous. The Committee To Hear Rights Testimony Washinuton-aiPU-Two cabi net member, and Alabama Gov. George Wallace went be fore senators today to testify on President Kennedy's civil Fights program. Atty. Gen. Robert F. Ken nedy was called to the Senate Judiciary Committee, headed by Sen. James O. Eastland (D-Miss.) for questioning on the full civil rights package before Congress. Labor Secretary W. Wil lard Wirtz was lead-off wit ness for a subcommittee hear ing on the President's bid to expand the manpower re training act to help Negroes find jobs. And Wallace, who Monday blasted the President s pro posals and demanded he be voted out of the While House, returned to the Senate Com merce Committee for the sec ond day. The committee is considering the program's public accommodations fea ture, which would guaraniee free access to privately owned businesses open to the public. OREGON Small Worlds Around Us By LYNN M. WATKINS (Register and Tribune Syndicate, .963, little fanners tire and wear out their wings; then others step into their places and fresh air continues to replace the stagnant air of the hive. Many men have spent their lives studying the habits of the honey bee, and they have made many startling discover ies. There are hundreds of questions, however, pertain ing to the history of bee life, which still do not have ready answers. These tiny insects, which are one of mankind's benefactors, possess many un known characteristics which, if revealed, may assist future humans to better understand some of the mysteries of all living things. There is no sign on the "marquee" of a beehive prom ising inside comfort, but we know that by a high degree of instinct or intelligence the busy little bee has solved the problem of air conditioning. They could truthfully adver tise, If they wished, that it actually Is many degrees cool er inside. 13 Wmt4 T Stilt DATHY f.rm oit tliir!. 17 flxii.rl.mi., ?C7'7tli. yar, WANTI'P: house, l worn . murm .wllh tot hop.
