In the preparation of teachers will move into full expert mental stage this fall in a co operative venture involving aoutnern Uregon college and tne Medford school district, The plan provides for the recruitment of high quality potential teachers, a redesign ed pre - service preparation program, and a full-time su pervised internship as a cul minating experience. The plan is considered by leading Oregon educators as superior method to methods now being used in preparing teachers for elementary and secondary school teaching. The venture is .part of the Oregon Program, which is be ing financed by the Ford Foundation to study ways of improving teaching, thus im proving education. Candidates for admission Into the new approach for preparing teachers are chosen on the basis of several fao tors. Desirable Personal Qualities In addition to qualifying for Tegular admission to Southern Oregon college's - teacher education program and having a minimum grade point average of 2.5 with ap propriate scores on a series of tests, the candidate also shows desirable personal qual ities and promise superior teaching potential. 'Among other qualifications are recommendations from appropriate people, evidence of sufficient interest to com plete the program, and ac ceptance by the administra tion of Medford public schools. Two calendar years will be required to complete the pro gram. Associate Teacher The first year will Include a half-day as an associate teacher in Medford schools, plus additional college cours es and experiences designed for each student's particular needs. The second year will include a full-time assignment as an intern teacher accompa nied by an educational sem inar. By attending three sum mer sessions and carrying a maximum load, some students may complete the masters de gree program, college offi cials indicated. This will de pend upon the student's aca demic status and his desire to accelerate. All candidates can complete the require ments for a bachelors degree. During the first year of the program, associate teachers may earn about $1,000. Dur ing the second year, or the intern year, participants will be paid about $4,000. Stu dents who successfully com plete the program and are recommended for employment by the Medford public schools may be placed on the salary schedule at the second year experience level step. Hat Much to Offer The internship program, college officials noted, has much to offer candidates in the teacher education field at Southern Oregon college. Among some of the advant ages: 1. Student teaching and In tern experiences in a new learning environment for chil dren. 2. Professional education experiences concurrent with observation and participation experiences in the classroom. 3. Profit from intensive and continuous supervision by ex perienced classroom teachers end college supervisors. Setter Preparation 4. Receiving some renumer etion during the last two years of the preparation period. Seven Tracts of Timber Are Sold Seven tracts containing an estimated volume of 8,091,000 board feet were sold at oral auction by the Medford dis trict, bureau of land manage ment, last week. Five of the tracts were pur chased at the appraised price. Purchasers included Kogap Manufacturing company, Med ford, Rough and Ready Tim ber company. Cave Junction, Stumbo Brothers and W. H. Kahl, both of Wolf Creek, and and Spalding and Son, Grants A tract of 738,000 board feet on Elk creek was award ed to Fir-Ply Inc., Medford, with a high bid of $27.60 per thousand on Douglas-fir. Un successful bidders were House Brothers, Olson-Lawyer and Elk Lumber company. Medford Corporation pur chased a tract of slvaage tim ber on the Butte Falls-Prospect highway for a total of S6.395.25. The other bidder was Ben Gallentine, Ashland. The three tracts receiving no bid at the regular June sale were sold later in the month as 90-day sales. They were purchased by Steve Wil on. White City. Stumbo Brothers. Wolf Creek, and Richard J. Tyke, Glendale. ences which will provide for more and better prc-service preparation than is possible in the present teacher train ing program. Students participating in the program also will be elgi ble for employment in Med ford schools upon successful completion of the program, teaching certificate. Supervised By Teacher Placing associate and in tern teachers will be carefully handled along several basic criteria, SOC officials noted, One will be the grade level preference of the participant, and another is consideration of the area of academic special Areas of the best available supervsion also will be con sidered, as well as the abili ties of the student relating to the needs of the cooperating school district. Associate and intern teach ers will be supervised by teachers in the cooperating school district. These teach their ability to provide Quali ty assistance. Supervision also will be provided on a syste matic basis by. members of the college staff. Teaching done by the stu dents will be observed and evaluated by the supervisors, who also will assist in plan ning and presenting lessons. The professional growth achieved by the student teach ers also will be analized. Conference Scheduled Associate and intern teach ers also will receive help in adjusting teaching activities to the specific level of the curriculum and the class, and will receive aid in under standing the unique charac teristics of individual schools and students. Conferences between super visors and assoicate and in tern teachers will be sched uled to discuss and exchange ideas, and program partici pants will be encouraged to become aware of the value of self-analysis. SOC students who will bo- come associate teachers in the Medford district this year include Mildred Boyd and Nancy Burrill, second grade level; Barbara Bell and Wil ma Clark, third grade level; Delorcs Pool and Beverly Todd, fourth grade level; Lin. da Cornutt, Maxine Widman, Chrystine Hulshof and Har old Moblcy, fifth grade level; Lani Frenzel. Rosalia Wii, Janice Stevens and Mildred Williams, sixth grade level; Karaloe Selby and James Susce, secondary social sci ence; Kaye Goff and Gary Watts, secondary English; Dennis Dedrick, secondary mathematics; John Jeal and Yvonne Dunisch, secondary science.
