Barry Goldwater (R-Ariz.) that the Kennedy administra tion is ready to co-exist with International communism. Goldwater, a 1964 GOP presidential possibility, said Disputed Cancer Drug Developers Withdraw Petition Chicago - (UPO - The most bitterly fought medical battle of the decade took a dramatic turn Friday when the dis coverer of krebiozcn with drew his application for con tinued experimental status of the drug. The move. In effect, meant at least a temporary halt in efforts to win federal ap proval of the controversial cancer drug and put it on the market. Dr. Stevan Durovlc, a ref ugee Yugoslav physician who 'first extracted the substance from the blood serum of horses 16 years ago, withdrew his application in a letter to Anthony J. Celebreeze, sec' retary of the Department of Health, Education and wet fare (HEW). He said the government had waned a fight against "an unbiased clinical test" of the drug with "unheard-of pres sure, the spreading of false statements to the press, an at tempt to frame me and now an attempt to Indict me." He told Celebreeze he had "lost hope that your depart ment will ever solve this con troversy In good .faith." The latest attempts to secure an evaluation of kre biozen from the National Can cer Institute (NCI) and the Food and Drug Administra tion (FDA) bogged down in a welter of charges and counter charges. Federal officials maintained that information provided by the drug's sponsors was Inad equate for a thorough test. Durovlc and Dr. Andrew C. Ivy, who has virtually staked .his professional career on his support of the drug, main tained they submitted ade quate information. Krebtozen has long been opposed fay the American Medical ' Association ,(AMA), which maintains the drug is worthless In the treatment of cancer. Ivy Is perhaps the one per son most caught up in the krebiozcn controversy. A phy siologist of considerable re pute, he lost Ills post as vice president of the University of Illinois where he first tested the drug and found it had "merit." Johnson Says America 'On Move' Casper, Wyo. - IUPD - Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson declared Saturday that "America Is on the move" and said "Those who talk of an anti-business administration are talking from their polit ical prejudices." In a prepared luncheon speech, the vice president pre sented a variety of statistics as evidence of economic growth. He also said the ad ministration's foreign trade legislation and its proposed tax reforms shows that the ad ministration "Is attentive to the needs of the national econ omy." Johnson coupled his recital of economic strength and bus iness prosperity with a jab at discrimination in hiring. He is chairman of the President's Committee on Equal Employ ment Opportunities. M. - IUPII -More than half of the 45 planes competing in the 17th annual cross-country Powder Puff Derby landed at this north western New Mexico city Saturday for an overnight stop en route from Bakers- field, Calif., to Atlantic City, N. J. Twenty-three planes, most with a woman pilot and woman co-pilot, landed at Farmington within 00 minutes after Californian Patsy Mc Ewan touched down at 12:30 p. m. (3:30 p. m. edt). Telephone Cables Sabotaged During Strike In Florida Tampa, Fla. - IUPD - Guards rode shotgun Saturday on General Telephone company trucks sent to repair cables that have been sabotaged since a strike started three days ago. A company spokesman said three of the lines cut Saturday were government cables, In cluding 8 link in the high priority SAGE (semiautomatic ground environment) defense system, The BomBrd missile, a long range high altitude supersonic rocket designed to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft before they get near U. S. targets, Is a part of the SAGE system. The Bomnrc Is guided by a ground control network. Phones Out Other cable cuttings knocked out about 30,000 phones in Tampa, Bnd five major lines feeding St. Peters burg also were severed. In an eliort to nan the vandalism, company workmen In St. Petersburg ' welded down manhole covers which open onto main trunk lines. Cut cables left some radio, television stations and news papers In the Tampa Bay area without wire service news reports and disrupted service to stock brokerage houses In St. Petersburg. The company said in addi tion to the cable cuttings, tele phone booths were being dam aged, phones destroyed, syrup poured'into coin slots, poles burned and relay boxes dam aged. However, there were no re ports of any trouble between the guarded repair crews and striking members of Local 824 of the International Brother hood of Electrical Workers (AFL-CIO) union. Robert Mount, president and business manager of the local, sulci the union had no knowledge of tho reported vandalism, and charged the company reports were being used as a smokescreen "to put the blame on tho union for company shortcomings." Wag Dispute The walkout was called as a result of n dispute over wages, working conditions, seniority and fringe benefits. It affected a six-county area of central Florida. Edwin L. Mason, chairman of tho Florida Public Utilities Commission, today sent iden tical telegrams to both skies Grant! Youth Held For Slaying In Frankfurt, Germany-IUPD-A young American soldier sought in connection with the stroel-fght death of a Frank furt teen-ager surrendered to U. S. military police early Saturday. SPC4 James Michael Smith, 20, of Longview, Wash., stationed at Gutlcut barracks In Frankfurt, said he was the civilan-clad American who punched 19-ycar-old Harald Vilzmann In the stomach Wednesday night, an Army spokesman said. Germany prosecutors first claim on U.S. military offenders. When the agreement took effect July 1, U. Passengers had their seatbelts unfastened when the United Air Lines plane struck a sudden down draft, Jostling the 88 passengers and crew of seven. Three passengers and three crewmen were treated for shock when the plane reach ed Chicago. President Charles de Gaulle more closely guarded than ever after the arrest July 8 of Secret Army Organization (OAS) terrorists who arrived from Spain, will take the salute. A key point of Interest In the parade will be the first public showing of an atomic radiation-proof medium tank, the AMX30. The tank is de signed to protect its crew from atomic radiation and radioactive dust. Festivities were expected to get a head start last night in areas such as the Latin Quarter where students, art ists and tourists last year were swept away by the holi day enthusiasm and rioted with police. In his speech, Goldwater Marine Charged In Racial Case Albany, Ga. - IUPD - A young Marine who told police he "had to shoot a Negro" be cause of concern over racial unrest was charged Saturday with assault with intent to murder, Police arrested Robert J. Kelley, 19, of Baltimore, Md., shortly after he fired a shot gun blast at railroad flagman Jessie Bailey of Albany at a railroad crossing here early Saturday. Bailey was not ser iously injured. Police Chief Laurie Pritch ett said Kelley, stationed at the Marine corps supply de pot here, told him he had been brooding about racial in cidents at Cambridge, Md., and while drinking decided "he had to shoot a Negro." The young Marine drove to the crossing where . Bailey was on duty, fired at him with a shotgun and sped away. Wit nesses got his license number and notified police. Pritchett said Kelley would be prosecuted "to the fullest extent of the law." The chief warned that violence would not be tolerated here in this south Georgia city where anti-segregation protests the past 19 months have kept po lice hopping.
