Disputed Cancer
Drug Developers
Withdraw Petition
Chicago - (UPO - The most
bitterly fought medical battle
of the decade took a dramatic
turn Friday when the dis
coverer of krebiozcn with
drew his application for con
tinued experimental status of
the drug.
The move. In effect, meant
at least a temporary halt in
efforts to win federal ap
proval of the controversial
cancer drug and put it on the
market.
Dr. Stevan Durovlc, a ref
ugee Yugoslav physician who
'first extracted the substance
from the blood serum of
horses 16 years ago, withdrew
his application in a letter to
Anthony J. Celebreeze, sec'
retary of the Department of
Health, Education and wet
fare (HEW).
He said the government had
waned a fight against "an
unbiased clinical test" of the
drug with "unheard-of pres
sure, the spreading of false
statements to the press, an at
tempt to frame me and now
an attempt to Indict me."
He told Celebreeze he had
"lost hope that your depart
ment will ever solve this con
troversy In good .faith."
The latest attempts to
secure an evaluation of kre
biozen from the National Can
cer Institute (NCI) and the
Food and Drug Administra
tion (FDA) bogged down in a
welter of charges and counter
charges. Federal officials maintained
that information provided by
the drug's sponsors was Inad
equate for a thorough test.
Durovlc and Dr. Andrew C.
Ivy, who has virtually staked
.his professional career on his
support of the drug, main
tained they submitted ade
quate information.
Krebtozen has long been
opposed fay the American
Medical ' Association ,(AMA),
which maintains the drug is
worthless In the treatment of
cancer.
Ivy Is perhaps the one per
son most caught up in the
krebiozcn controversy. A phy
siologist of considerable re
pute, he lost Ills post as vice
president of the University of
Illinois where he first tested
the drug and found it had
"merit."

When the agreement took
effect July 1, U. S. officials
said they expected West Ger

rights on most GI's except in
unusually serious cases.
The first such case appeared
to be shaping up at Passau in
Bavaria.
Passau prosecutor Gerhard

would charge Pvt. Robert Ed

Bergcr said he at first In
tended to charge Manns with
murder before the Passau

undecided whether he would
prosecute for murder or for
manslaughter.
West Germany has no death
penalty and the worst Manns
could get for a murder convic
