MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON MONDAY, JUNE 24, 1963 Eight Get Berths In State Net Meet Mike Naumes and Kathy Smith won the 18 and under open honors in the week end district tennis tournament conducted by the Medford Junior Chamber of Commerce at the senior high school courts. They will be among eight entries from the district in the state Jaycee tourney next week end at Roseburg. Paula Lowery claimed the district laurels for the 16 and under girls' open division. A. T. Highland qualified for state as the only entry in the 16 and under boys' open district bracket. Novices gaining state spots through the local tourney were Mary Gordenier and Ken Myers, 16 and under, and Nick Rasmussen and Jeanne Saladc, 18 and under. Miss Salade was the only eligible entry in her division. Mike Naumes and Mary Walsh were champs of the Medford tourney in open mixed doubles. Rosemary Taylor and Bob Gordon won the novice title. State tourney play will be singles only. Naumes defeated Chris Ras mussen, 9-7, 5-7, 6-3, in the 18 and under boys' open finals. Rasmussen made it tough go ing until hampered by a mus cle cramp. Naumes downed Lee Wimberlcy, 6-3, 6-2, and Rasmussen defeated Gary Highland, 10-12, 6-3, 6-1, in semifinals. Miss Smith trimmed Miss Walsh, 6-1, 6-0, for the girls' 18 and under open toga. She beat Sharecn Young, 6-3, 6-4, in a semi. Miss Walsh had a bye. Sue Naumes beat Paula Lowery, 6-4, 7-5, in the 16 and under open. They were the only entrants. Nick Rasmussen won 6-1, 6-0 from Ron Grimes in the only 18 and under boys' novice match. In the girls' 16 and under novice finale Miss Gordenier was 6-0, 6-0 victor over Marcy Miller. In semifinals Miss Mil ler defeated Susan Laten dresse, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, and Miss Gordenier trimmed Miss Tay lor, 6-3, 6-0. Meyers down ed Greg Peters, 6-2. 6-2, in his 16 and under final. Earlier he won from Tom Glonning, 6-3, 6-0, and Peters tripped Mike Tur ner, 6-1, 5-7, 6-1. In the open mixed doubles concluder the Mike Naumes Walsh team turned back Gary Highland and Sue Naumes, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3. They had won from Nick Rasmussen ' and Miss Salade, 6-3, 6-1, and Gary and Sue had trimmed A.-T. Highland and Miss Lowery, 6-3, 7-5. Miss Taylor and Gordon de feated Molly Ely and Russ Ferguson, 6-2, 4-6, 6-0, in their novice title match. Semifinal results were Miss Ely and Fer guson over Pain Monroe and Spencc Buffington, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5. and Miss Taylor and Gor Mechanics Tools For RENT At A to Z Rental 1213 N. Paul Stuber High Jumps Seven Feet St. Louis-JliPP-Orcgon's Paul Stuber and Oregon State's Morgan Groth are going to Russia but former Oregon star Dyrol Burleson appar ently will stay home. The trio qualified Saturday at the national AAU track meet here for the U. S. team which will compete against Russia in a dual at Moscow July 20-21. Burleson, who led Oregon to the NCAA championship last year, won the mile run in meet record time of 3:56.7. Then he announced he would not accept his place on the U. S. squad because of business and family commit ments. Former Oregon standout Jim Grclle dropped out dur ing the race with a sore foot. Stuber finished second to Gene Johnson of the Santa Clara Youth Village in the high jump. Each man went 7-0 but Johnson won in a jumpoff. Groth Third Stuber, clearing 7 feet for the first time in his career made the U. S. team for the second time. He made the squad in 1958 as a 16-year-old high schooler. Groth, who won the NCAA mile title the previous week end, finished third in the 880 yard run in 1:47.5. Bill Crothcrs of Canada won in 1:46.8 and ex-Southern Illinois ace Jim Dupree was second in 1:47.3. Groth got a place on the team because Crothcrs is from Canada. Oregon's Terry Llewellyn failed to clear 6-10 in the high jump. Norm Hoffman of Oregon State had to scratch himself from the 880 finals because of a leg injury. Ex-Oregon State standout Darrell Horn gained a spot on the squad by finishing sec ond to Ralph Boston in the broad jump Friday. Robinson, Giardello In Ring Mix Tonight Philadelphia - 0IP1I - Sugar Ray Robinson and Joey Giar- dello, each craving another shot at the middleweight crown, are slated for a 10- round "eliminator" tonight before an expected 9,000 at Philadelphia's Convention Hall. Giardello of Philadelphia is favored at 7-5 because of his advantage in youth, 32 years to Robinson s 42 or 43; and because he is ranked third among contenders whereas the once-great Sugar Ray is now un-ratcd. Promoter Herman Taylor who expects a gate of about $75,000 tonight, said he will guarantee champion Dick Tiger or whoever wears the crown next autumn a guar antee of $75,000 to defend against tonight's winner. The Mcdfords packed all their runs into the first three innings - with nine in the second - to keep pace with the Klamath Falcons at the head of the division chase. Medford also won the non counting second ruckus 4 to 3. Enyart struck out batters on eight occasions and issued two free passes in the counter. Bob Woldt was credited with the lone hit against him in the fifth inning. The Medford book called shortstop Dan Miles throw into the dirt at first base an error. Big Second In the big second Inning Miles, Ken Phipps, Don An derson and Ron Edmonds got hits for the Medford club. There were four bases on balls, a hit batter and an error. Miles, Jim Calhoun and Phipps each had two hits for Medford. There were a total of nine Medford hits. KF starting pitcher, Jon Pilgrim, yielded six free trips to the base paths. Reliever Marv Cun ningham fanned three. In the second fray Medford was held to two hits by Hawk chuckcr Renick but used each in the scoring. Miles walked and stole second base in the first inning and was singled home by Calhoun. In the third canto for three runs a Jim Cox single was put with two walks, a hit batter, a ground out and an error. 5-Hitler For Smith Two Klamath runs in the first panel were on an error, groundout and hits by Gary Coleman and Mike Spiker. One other tally in the fourth was on a base on balls and Spiker and Roger Barllett singles. Medford pitcher Dane Smith permitted five hits and two walks. He fanned four Renick walked five and struck out two. The Medford club was with out the services of all-around player Mike Barnes who turned an ankle on Saturday. Also pitcher Jack Forde is no longer with the club. He is working at McMinnvillo. Medford meets the Hawks I again this Thursday, game will be at the grounds ball park here. GP Legion Club Has Split Luck Grants Pass - Grants Pass American Legion junior base ball team had divided luck over the week end with Klam ath Falls entries in the South ern division of Area 4. On Saturday night the Mock Ford team bunched its hits and got fine chucking from Jerry McCormack to edge the Klamath Falls Hawks 6 to 5 at Klamath Falls. Then, here yesterday, the Klamath Falcons beat an er ror plagued Grants Pass club 8 to 3 and 6 to 2. First game of the doublcheader counted in the league and enabled the Falcons to continue to retain leadership share with Med ford on a 5-1 record. The win over the Hav.'Jts and loss to the Falcons makes GP 4-2 for the campaign and tied with Central Point for third. After falling to Medford yesterday the Hawks are 2-4 in the circuit. In the Saturday mix. Mock Ford collected three hits in each of the two innings in which it scored. Pitcher Mc Cormack was charged with six hits. On four of them Of fielders had trouble with the ball in the lights. McCormack fanned 11 and walked four. Forsgren, Summers Triple Larry Forsgren tripled home two runs in the second inning for Grants Pass. Don Summers threc-baggercd in another in this same frame and singled home two in the fifth. The lights trouble almost was the undoing of the Mock crew as the Hawks tabulated three times in the seventh canto. In the counting game yes terday the Falcon's Rich Jack son, limiting GP to two hits, fanned 14 baiters and walked only one. Grants Pass had seven misplays in the game. Klamath used two hits and two errors for three runs in the third inning and gained three more scores in the sev enth inning on one hit and four errors. Rich Wolney tripled. Bob Peters doubled Kciscckcr Ford picki its markers in the first ning. Blue Angel Nine Trips RV Maids Memorial Field, White City - The Blue Angels of Port Angeles. Wash., swept a Northwest Women's Major Softball league doublcheader on a shower-soaked diamond here Saturday evening. They whipped the Rogue Valley Dairy Maids 6 to 0 and 4 to 2. Port Angeles gained the jump in each game with first inning runs and in the second fracas had a 3 to 0 gap before the Dairy Maids scored. In the opener Angels' pitcher Cathy Benedetto yielded two singles in the first inning then held Rogue Valley hilless the rest of the way. Only one runner got on base after the first canto, on a walk, as the Washington club played an errorless fray. Rogue Valley was hurt by eight miscues. The Maids threatened in the late innings of the second mix. However, the Angels called on ace pitcher Bene detto in relief. She got out of trouble and squelched Rogue Valley rally hopes. Three In First In the first game PA put together hits by Sharon Elof sen and Rusty Galles, a walk and two errors for three first inning markers. Four errors brought in a single tally in the fifth inning. In the sev enth a double by Merle Gag non, a single by Elofscn and two errors accounted for two more. Elofson and Gagnon each got two hits for the Angels. RV safeties were by Janet Pfaff and Slifrry Larson. The Maid hits followed a walk to Doris Hickson and loaded the bases with one out. A strike out and flyout ended the threat. Benedetto walked two and fanned three. Maid chuckcr Pat Barron allowed but one base on balls and whiffed four in a six-hitter. Two bases on balls, four wild pitches and a hit by Barb Bell gave Port Angeles two runs in the opening frame of the second tangle. A base on balls and singles by Mug' gie Bean and Sharon Clark put over a third inning score. In the fifth inning a base on balls, hits by Elofscn and Gagnon and a fielder's option brought another marker. The damage would have been much worse, but on a smash good enough for a three-base hit Benedetto was out for failure to touch first base Glines Triples Singles by Yvonne Mclvor and Jnn Batcman, a walk and an error got the Maids a fifth inning score. In the sixth Becky Glines tripled and came home on a wild pitch Benedetto came into the game with two balls and a strike against Pat Barron and got her to ground out. An error and a walk, neverthe less put runners on base. But a strikeout and a groundout spoiled opportunity for Rogue Valley. Batcman and Glines each had two hits for Rogue Val ley. A "triple" play occurred in the fourth inning of the second game. Glines caught Benedetto's fly ball In center field and threw out Elofscn at the plate. Dairy Maid catcher Sherry Larson was out when Elofscn collided with her. CP Cheney Studs, Roseburg Divide b i Memorial Field, White City -A three-run seventh inning splurge and a lone first inning run - Those counters made the difference here yesterday afternoon when Roseburg Lockwood Motors and Cen tral Point Cheney Studs split a baseball doublcheader. Roseburg surged to nab the opener 4 to 3 and Central Point won the second hassle 1 to 0 in non-league American Legion junior games. Ashland and Central Point American Legion junior bate ball teams will play ai S o'clock this evening at the fairgrounds ball park here. It will be a non-league game. The Lockwood club erased a 1 to 3 deficit with its big seventh on hits by Jim Boom er and Lance Casebeer, two bases on balls, two hit batters and a wild pitch. Studs' sec ond relief hurler Neal Ellis hit Artie McDonald with a pitch with the bases loaded to send across what proved to be the winning run. Cool Fans 14 Roseburg pitcher Ron Cool, victim of a three-hit Cheney assault in the first canto of the starter, came back to hold the Studs to three hits over the rest of the way. He struck out the side in three innings including the last two and had a strikeout total of 14 along with two walks. In the second encounter Cenrtal Point's Lou Alvarcr led off in the bottom of the first on a double. He went to third when Ellis crashed a single and scored on another sizzling safety by Willie Jones. Central Point backed pitch cr Larry Mason without mis cues. He allowed only one hit over the five-inning route. Mason whiffed batters nine times, including seven of the first nine men he faced. He gave up three bases on balls. Mike Blombcrg robbed Muson of a no-hitter with a blow deep into second base terri tory in the fifth panel. Another Alvarei Double The Studs got a two-run hop in the first encounter with first canto scores. Here, as he did later, Alvarez open cd with a two-base hit. Dave Twcddcl sacrificed. Ellis drove Alvarez home with safety and went to third when Neil Rivcnburg followed with a hit. Ellis scored on a dou ble steal. Roseburg narrowed the bat tle with a run in the third stanza on Bob Manning's trip le and Jim Beamer s single. Bcamer stole second and went to third base on an er ror but the tying run threat was removed when Beamer was caught in a rundown on ' double steal move. j Lance Casebeer had head- cd for second after a walk, i Studs' starting pitcher Bob Corliss made a move on Case-. beer then threw the ball home when Bcamer made his break. Anhorn was nut trvinry 1,1 go home on the overthrow er-1 ror and Corliss, who had bunted got all the way to third. However, Corliss was doubled off third on Alvarez' flyout to shortstop. With one out in the seventh Inning Blombcrg was hit by a pitch of reliever Wayne Clay. Bob Manning drew a walk. The two runners advanced on wild pitch. Then Bcamer inglcd them home to knot the game. Casebeer singled and Ellis was called to the hill. He walk ed Mike Markham to fill the sacks and struck out Dave Se van for the second out. Then, Ellis, who had little warm up after shifting from third base, hit McDonald. Rivcnburg for Central Point and Blombcrg and Bcamer for Roseburg each had two hits in the first game. Columbo Replaces Terry on Mat Card Rocky Columbo, Pacific Coast Junior heavyweight champion, has been signed for the big battle royal wrestling card at Medford armory Thursday night. He replaces Judo Jack Ter ry, whose performances since coining to the northwest were not of the caliber necessary for a big battle royal and he was removed from the card. The free-for-all will feature Haystack Calhoun, who at 601 pounds Is the world's big gest wrestler. Calhoun has been drawing record crowds wherever he has appeared since coming to the north west a couple of weeks ago.
