High Jumps
Seven Feet
St. Louis-JliPP-Orcgon's Paul
Stuber and Oregon State's
Morgan Groth are going to
Russia but former Oregon
star Dyrol Burleson appar
ently will stay home.
The trio qualified Saturday
at the national AAU track
meet here for the U. S. team
which will compete against
Russia in a dual at Moscow
July 20-21.
Burleson, who led Oregon
to the NCAA championship
last year, won the mile run
in meet record time of 3:56.7.
Then he announced he
would not accept his place on
the U. S. squad because of
business and family commit
ments.
Former Oregon standout
Jim Grclle dropped out dur
ing the race with a sore foot.
Stuber finished second to
Gene Johnson of the Santa
Clara Youth Village in the
high jump. Each man went
7-0 but Johnson won in a
jumpoff.
Groth Third
Stuber, clearing 7 feet for
the first time in his career
made the U. S. team for the
second time. He made the
squad in 1958 as a 16-year-old
high schooler.
Groth, who won the NCAA
mile title the previous week
end, finished third in the 880
yard run in 1:47.5.
Bill Crothcrs of Canada
won in 1:46.8 and ex-Southern
Illinois ace Jim Dupree was
second in 1:47.3.
Groth got a place on the
team because Crothcrs is from
Canada.
Oregon's Terry Llewellyn
failed to clear 6-10 in the
high jump. Norm Hoffman
of Oregon State had to scratch
himself from the 880 finals
because of a leg injury.
Ex-Oregon State standout
Darrell Horn gained a spot
on the squad by finishing sec
ond to Ralph Boston in the
broad jump Friday.
Robinson, Giardello
In Ring Mix Tonight
Philadelphia - 0IP1I - Sugar
Ray Robinson and Joey Giar-
dello, each craving another
shot at the middleweight
crown, are slated for a 10-
round "eliminator" tonight
before an expected 9,000 at
Philadelphia's Convention
Hall.
Giardello of Philadelphia is
favored at 7-5 because of his
advantage in youth, 32 years
to Robinson s 42 or 43; and
because he is ranked third
among contenders whereas
the once-great Sugar Ray is
now un-ratcd.
Promoter Herman Taylor
who expects a gate of about
$75,000 tonight, said he will
guarantee champion Dick
Tiger or whoever wears the
crown next autumn a guar
antee of $75,000 to defend
against tonight's winner.

Grants Pass - Grants Pass
American Legion junior base

over the week end with Klam
ath Falls entries in the South
ern division of Area 4.
On Saturday night the
Mock Ford team bunched its
hits and got fine chucking
from Jerry McCormack to
edge the Klamath Falls Hawks
6 to 5 at Klamath Falls.
Then, here yesterday, the
Klamath Falcons beat an er
ror plagued Grants Pass club
8 to 3 and 6 to 2. First game
of the doublcheader counted
in the league and enabled the
Falcons to continue to retain
leadership share with Med
ford on a 5-1 record. The win
over the Hav.'Jts and loss to
the Falcons makes GP 4-2 for
the campaign and tied with
Central Point for third. After
falling to Medford yesterday
the Hawks are 2-4 in the circuit.
In the Saturday mix. Mock
Ford collected three hits in
each of the two innings in
which it scored. Pitcher Mc
Cormack was charged with
six hits. On four of them Of

Nine Trips
RV Maids
Memorial Field, White City
- The Blue Angels of Port
Angeles. Wash., swept a
Northwest Women's Major
Softball league doublcheader
on a shower-soaked diamond
here Saturday evening.
They whipped the Rogue
Valley Dairy Maids 6 to 0 and
4 to 2.
Port Angeles gained the
jump in each game with first
inning runs and in the second
fracas had a 3 to 0 gap before
the Dairy Maids scored.
In the opener Angels'
pitcher Cathy Benedetto
yielded two singles in the
first inning then held Rogue
Valley hilless the rest of the
way. Only one runner got on
base after the first canto, on
a walk, as the Washington
club played an errorless fray.
Rogue Valley was hurt by
eight miscues.
The Maids threatened in
the late innings of the second
mix. However, the Angels
called on ace pitcher Bene
detto in relief. She got out of
trouble and squelched Rogue
Valley rally hopes.
Three In First
In the first game PA put
together hits by Sharon Elof
sen and Rusty Galles, a walk
and two errors for three first
inning markers. Four errors
brought in a single tally in
the fifth inning. In the sev

non, a single by Elofscn and
two errors accounted for two
more.
Elofson and Gagnon each
got two hits for the Angels.
RV safeties were by Janet
Pfaff and Slifrry Larson. The
Maid hits followed a walk to
Doris Hickson and loaded the
bases with one out. A strike
out and flyout ended the
threat.
Benedetto walked two and
fanned three. Maid chuckcr
Pat Barron allowed but one
base on balls and whiffed four
in a six-hitter.
Two bases on balls, four
wild pitches and a hit by
Barb Bell gave Port Angeles
two runs in the opening frame
of the second tangle. A base
on balls and singles by Mug'
gie Bean and Sharon Clark
put over a third inning score.
In the fifth inning a base on
balls, hits by Elofscn and
Gagnon and a fielder's option
brought another marker. The
damage would have been
much worse, but on a smash
good enough for a three-base
hit Benedetto was out for
failure to touch first base
Glines Triples
Singles by Yvonne Mclvor
and Jnn Batcman, a walk and
an error got the Maids a fifth
inning score. In the sixth
Becky Glines tripled and
came home on a wild pitch
Benedetto came into the
game with two balls and a
strike against Pat Barron and
got her to ground out. An
error and a walk, neverthe
