He gave up three other hits, all singles, and two walks to boost his season record to 10-2, best won-lost record on the Yankee staff. It also was Bouton'i' second shutout and sixth complete game. Roger Maris whacked his 15th homer, a 410-foot blast, and drove in another run to make things easy for Boulon. "First I want to thank them for the way they played the 17th hole in the final round on Oaturday," Boros said. "And then I want to thank them for taking a lot of strokes out there Sunday. They encouraged me a lot." , The oldest player ever to win Amorlca's premier golf t. jrnament, Boros made a shambles of the playoff with Cupit and Palmer shooting a ono-undcr-par aJ-di-iu. mat nut him three strokes ahead of the 25-year-old Cupit, who had a 37-36-73, and six in front of Palmer, who, suf fering from dysentery, card cd a 36-40-78. The Giants garnered a 2-1 decision over Seattle in the second game of Sunday's dou blcheader after being held scoreless In two previous con tests. They lost the opening contest 10-0. The second place Spokane Indians kept breathing down the Giants neck but it took them 10 innings to down San Oiego, 4-3, and remain Vi games behind Tacoma. Rangers Slip In other games Salt Lake City and Portland split their twinbill, tlie Denver at Okla homa City game was post poned due to wet grounds and Hawaii edged Oallus - Ft. Worth 7-5 on a two-run homer by Ron Saniford. The loss dropped the Rangers Into a tie for the southern division lead with San Diego. Four double plays helped the Giants to victory over the Rainicrs and gave Phil Hands his first victory against two losses In his first starting role since May 5. The Cincinnati Reds are back in the National league pennant picture because Bob Purkey and Johnny Edwards we.it to the movies last week. Purkey, a 23-game winner last year who missed the first month of this season with a shoulder injury, became alarmed when he lost four straight games, so he and his batterymate decided to look at films of the big righthand er's recent performances. Edwards immediately spot ted a change in Purkey's de livery. "The movies showed that Bob was unconsciously favor ing his arm," the Reds' baby faced catcher revealed. "He wasn't rearing back like he used to. He was kinda pushing his fast ball up there and as a result it lacked that little hop." , The lesson Purkey learn ed from that single movie session paid off handsomely Sunday. Big Bob's fast ball had plenty of hop on it as he pitched his first . complete game of the season a four hit, 4-0 victory over the Hous ton Colts in the opener of a doubleheader. The Reds also won he nightcap, 8-1, behind ancient Joe Nuxhall to boost their latest winning streak to seven games and sneak into third place, only one game back of the pace-setting St. Louis Cardinals. The Los Angeles Dodgers edged St. Louis, 4-3, but the Cardinals maintained their half-game lead over second place San Francisco when the Milwaukee Braves walloped the Giants, 10-4. The Pitts burgh Pirates secored a come back 7-6 victory over the Chi cago Cubs and the New York Mets took a pair from the Philadelphia Phillies, 5-0 and 4-1. Purkey needed only one hour and 3B minutes the Tri-City Victor Over Ashlanders Merrill - Tri-City Gems chalked up their second vic tory in American Legion jun ior baseball's Area 4 South ern division here yesterday by beating Ashland 5 to 1. The Gems got three of their runs in the first inning on a double by Larry Conner and singles by Dale Kurtz, Bob Moore and Jim Moore, Pitcher Dave Hill held back the Ashlanders with a 13 strikeout four-hitter in which he issue no bases on balls. Ashland's run was in the sixth inning on a Tim Voth single and John Rhodes dou ble. Conner had two hits for Tri-City. The Gems are 2-5 in the league now and Ashland is 0-7. Ashland will play Central Point in a non-counter at 8 p.m. on Monday at the fair grounds ball park at Med ford. A second game was started here yesterday but rain pre vented its completion. State AAU Boxing Chairman Dies Portland -ItTD- Ben Harris, prominent Oregon boxing fig ure, died Saturday night of a heart attack. He was 51. Harris was chairman of the State Amateur Athletic union boxing committee and vice president of the National AAU boxing program. He was instrumental in bringing the Golden Gloves boxing program to Portland and had been reappointed last week to the Portland Boxing commission. Harris also owned and oper ated two Portland restau rants, the Tik Tok and Three Star, in partnership' with his two brothers, Vic and Arnold. The Pirates overcame a four-run deficit in beating the Cubs with the aid of Roberto Clemente's three-run homer in the seventh. Ron Santo drove in four Chicago runs with a homer and a single. SO Junior Slate Gets Under Way Southern Oregon Junior baseball rolled into action to day with two games in the Intermediate league. First Pee Wee league games will be on Tuesday afternoon and the Cub or Junior circuit has its first games on Tuesday evening and Wednesday after noon. A switch from the original ' Junior slate will put the Cen tral Point Crater Cubs and Medford against each other in the Tuesday evening fray. The clubs collide at 7:30 p.m. at Memorial field. White City. Medford Yankees met Cen tral Point Stars and Central Point Rams played Phoenix Talent in games this after noon. On Thursday afternoon it will be Phoenix-Talent at Central Point Stars and CP Rams at Medford Giants. Pee Wee Games Tuesday's 2 p.m. Pee Wea tussles are Medford Tigers vs. Medford Wildcats, Central Point Braves versus Central Point Indians and Jacksonville at Prospect.
