Cincinnati, Purkey Profit
From Film; Reds Nab Pair
By TIM MORIAHTY
UPI Sports Writer .
The Cincinnati Reds are

Purkey, a 23-game winner
last year who missed the first
month of this season with a
shoulder injury, became
alarmed when he lost four
straight games, so he and his
batterymate decided to look
at films of the big righthand
er's recent performances.
Edwards immediately spot
ted a change in Purkey's de
livery. "The movies showed that
Bob was unconsciously favor
ing his arm," the Reds' baby
faced catcher revealed. "He
wasn't rearing back like he
used to. He was kinda pushing
his fast ball up there and as
a result it lacked that little
hop." ,
The lesson Purkey learn
ed from that single movie
session paid off handsomely
Sunday. Big Bob's fast ball
had plenty of hop on it as he
pitched his first . complete
game of the season a four
hit, 4-0 victory over the Hous
ton Colts in the opener of a
doubleheader.
The Reds also won he
nightcap, 8-1, behind ancient
Joe Nuxhall to boost their
latest winning streak to seven
games and sneak into third
place, only one game back of
the pace-setting St. Louis
Cardinals.
The Los Angeles Dodgers
edged St. Louis, 4-3, but the
Cardinals maintained their
half-game lead over second
place San Francisco when the
Milwaukee Braves walloped
the Giants, 10-4. The Pitts
burgh Pirates secored a come
back 7-6 victory over the Chi
cago Cubs and the New York
Mets took a pair from the
Philadelphia Phillies, 5-0 and
