Freeman hat scheduled a month's tour of farmlands and agricultural facilities in Director Named For 05U Union Corvallis - George Frederic Stevens. State university of Iowa, has been appointed new director of the Memorial union and student activities at Oregon State university, according to President James H. Jensen. The Memorial union is the center for student activities on campus and has become a symbol of Oregon state over the years. It is the meeting place also for scores of off campus organizations during the year. . Stevens, 38, has been as sociate director of the Me morial union at Iowa since 1SS9 and on the Union staff there since 1930. He will ar rive in Corvallis Aug. 1 to succeed Maj. Edward C. All worth, who Is retiring after 38 years of service. the Soviet Union and several Communist bloc countries be ginning about July 13. : Freeman is expected to spend 18 days in the Soviet Union, inspecting all phases of Soviet agriculture.' ' He will be accompanied by Mrs. Freeman and economists and scientists from the Agri culture Department. Besides the U.S. S R., Free man and his group will visit Poland, Rumania, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia. Freeman's visit will be within the framework of the United States - U.S.S.R. agree ment on exchange in the sci entific, educational cultural and other fields for 1962-63. Pysin, the then min ister of agriculture of the So- Everest Climbers Due lor Welcome Seattle-tin - James Whit laker, the first American to conquer .Mt. Everest, was scheduled to receive a hero's welcome here today. Whittaker, who was to ar rive at Seattle-Tacoma Inter national Airport at about 2:13 p.m., was to be honored with a parade through the downtown area and a recep tion in the plaza of the city's Public Safety Building. ' Scheduled to share the wel come with the 6 (oot-5 moun taineer from nearby dmond were two other members of the Everest expedition, Luth er Jcrstad and Barry Prath er. Jcrstad is a speech teach er at the University of Ore gon and a native of Gig Har bor, Wash., Prather is from Ellensburg, Wash. .Tiratari was one of the five members of the expedition who reached the top of the world's highest mountain Whlilakcr made his climb on May 1. The others reached the top in later assaults. ' After a short vacation with his family, Whittaker is sched ih in riv to Washington. D.C., July 8 to meet Presi dent Kennedy. The group is expected to travel from Washington to Moscow by commercial plane and to use Soviet planes with in the U.S.S.R. Under present plans, at the end of 18 dayr a United States plane will pick up the Freeman party at Moscow and fly the group to Warsaw, Sofia, Bucharest, Belgrade and back to Wash ington. A department source said Freeman expects to see as much of Soviet agriculture as possible, and by observing the agricultural technology, get an idea on things to come in Russian farming operations. Freeman tn meetings with Soviet officials is not expect ed to take the ' initiative tn any talks regarding trade re lations between the United States and the U.S.S.R. But if the matter does come up. it is likely that he would let the Soviets know that any plans for trade expansion be tween the two countries would be predicated largely on casing of the cold war tensions. In the satellite countries. Freeman Is expected to con fine his Inquiries about their agricultural problems to talks with American embassy mem bers who are familiar with lo cal situations. However, he probably will' tour several farming areas near the cap itals of the satellites. Mrs. Freeman's schedule is expected to include talks with Soviet women about consum er problems. "I am completely mysti fied." Parker said today. "Beryl never indicated she would do a thing like this." Portlander Named State Fire Marshal Beaverton - (IT - C. W. Stickney, a member of t h e Portland Fire Bureau for 25 years, was appointed state tire marshal Saturday. The appointment was made by Gov. Mark Hatfield at a banquet ending the four-day annual Oregon Fire Services conference. Stickney, 50, has been a bat talion chief with the Port land Fire Bureau. The new position was created by the 1963 legislature. Six Injured When Trains Sideswipe Hornell. N. Y. An Erie Lackawanna passenger train with one baggage ear loaded with "classified mate rial" Saturday night sideswip ed a freight train here, injur ing six persons. Police here said the bag eaeo car one of three cars derailed in the wreck - re portedly contained a guarded military security shipment "possibly containing a radio active hazard."' A' spokesman at 1st U. S. Army headquarters on Gover nor's island in New York City described the shipment as "rlaHfiifipH material " Hp said it was non-atomic. A military guard of two Army officer and eight enlisted men was accompanying .the shipment which originated from a U. S. Army arsenal in the 1st Army area,he said.
