month's tour of farmlands
and agricultural facilities in

Iowa, has been appointed
new director of the Memorial
union and student activities
at Oregon State university,
according to President James
H. Jensen.
The Memorial union is the
center for student activities
on campus and has become a
symbol of Oregon state over
the years. It is the meeting
place also for scores of off
campus organizations during
the year. .
Stevens, 38, has been as
sociate director of the Me
morial union at Iowa since
1SS9 and on the Union staff
there since 1930. He will ar
rive in Corvallis Aug. 1 to
succeed Maj. Edward C. All
worth, who Is retiring after
38 years of service.

and Yugoslavia.
Freeman's visit will be
within the framework of the
United States - U.S.S.R. agree
ment on exchange in the sci
entific, educational cultural
and other fields for 1962-63.

Whittaker, who was to ar
rive at Seattle-Tacoma Inter

with a parade through the

tion in the plaza of the city's
Public Safety Building. '

Freeman expects to see as
much of Soviet agriculture as

agricultural technology, get

lations between the United
States and the U.S.S.R. But
if the matter does come up.
it is likely that he would let
the Soviets know that any
plans for trade expansion be

Freeman Is expected to con
fine his Inquiries about their
agricultural problems to talks
with American embassy mem
bers who are familiar with lo
cal situations. However, he
probably will' tour several
farming areas near the cap
itals of the satellites.
Mrs. Freeman's schedule is
expected to include talks with
Soviet women about consum
er problems.
