THURSDAY, MAY 30. 1963 A 5 3 Try and Stop Me -By BENNETT CERF- Tl f ORRIS FISHBEIN tells of a man who bought his wife a L'-1 piano for Christmas, but by Valentine's Day had per suaded her to switch to a clarinet. "How come'.'" asked a friend. "Well," was the MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON fIDillll-lli H wifldi - Ww explanation, "when she's playing the clarinet, she can't sing." "I had a young half-back on my team once," recalls Football Coach Jack Cur tice, "who was so darn fast ' he always was drawing un deserved penalties for be ing illegally in motion. I finally told one official that if he'd concentrate his at tention on the boy he'd rea lize he started so fas!; he gave the illusion of jump ing the gun, but really wasn't at all. On the very next play, the penalty whistle blew again. 'He wasn't in motion,' I screamed from the sidelines. ''Agreed,' called back the official. The penalty is on the rest of. the team foi delaying the game.'" QUOTABLE QUOTES: "A good sermon should not only comfort the afflicted but sfflict the comfortable." Walter l'rovost. O by Bennett Cert Distributed by King Features Syndicate In the Day's News By FRANK JENKINS Previously, in this space, Jt was noted that President Kennedy is planning to visit Ireland next month but won't include the village of Blarney in his tour, and won't kiss the famous Stone. As explained by Presiden tial Press Secretary Salinger, the acrobatics involved in kissing the Blarney stone are ti bit too vigorous to be risked in view of. the President's lame back. Most of us, I think, viill csrec with the wisdom of his decision. 1UT- In his upcoming cam paign for reelection, President Kennedy isn't eschewing all vigorous stunts - as may be LEGAL NOTICES NOTICE OF ELECTION IN THE COUNTY COURT OF THE SI Alt Uf U It f.UU. r wrv jni-r.- SON COUNTY ' IN THE MATTER OF THE PRO POSED FORMATION OF THE SAMS VALLEY IRRIGATION DISTRICT To all electors within the above proposed irriRation district: Pursuant to an order of the above entitled court entered (he j:th dav of May. 1!3. you are herewith advised that there uill he hold within the boundaries of the above proposed irrigation dis trict an election to determine whether or not that certain area fk'senbed more particularly in the order defining boundaries on file vnh the Jackson County Clerk Kinll be formed into an irrigation district with all the" powers con j tried by the Irrigation District .Act. AJK'HIiECT gathered from the following dispatch from Los Angeles: "President Kennedy will do a $100,000 'tdblp - hopping' task on June 7 for ii?e benefit of the Democratic National Committee's 1964 activities in his reelection campaign. "Instead of public fund raising dinner and address, the President will attend a $100(l-a-couple dinner limited to 100 couples in (he swank Beverly Hilton hotel, accord ing ( to Eugene L. Wyman, Democratic State Chairman. "Wyman, who is in charge of the dinner planning, said there will be no speakers table but instead there will be a VACANT SEAT at each table. The President, during the dinner, will 'hop' from table to table for brief con versations and some food." THAT is to say: At each of the tables oc cupied by these 100 couples, there will be a vacant seal. How many tables there will be isn't stated. But, since each couple will be paying SI, 000 for the privilege of saying casually to their friends: "Now when we were at the President's table at the dinner the other night, he said to us, etc.," it must be assumed that there mustn't be TOO MANY i?ople at each table. If it is to be worth what it costs, it must be kept on the cozy side. Let's say ten couples at each table. la That would be ten tables altogether. CO- You see- In the process of singing for his supper (as did Little Tom my Tucker) the President of the United States will be call ed upon to go lrom table to table until he has made the rounds of all ten. And- At each table- He must come up with something NEW - for it must be remembered that these 100 couples will tell all about it to their friends for weeks to come. The impression would be very bad if at each table he said the SAME THINGS. That just WOULDN'T DO. la He must think up something different for each table. It just might be that kissing the Blarney Stone would be less wearing on the President's is HL physical resources. A"' ME! One can't help wonder ing what George Washington . wouia nave said II it nad. been suggested to him that less , than two centuries later the j president of the United States ! would have to indulge in stunts like that in order to be . renominated and reelected to ;a second term. his response might have been on the vivid side - for .
