MAY 27. 1963 Auto Races At Portland Portland our big auto . racing events have been set over the Memorial Day week end at Jantzen arena, Thurs day, Friday, Saturday and Sunday afternoon. On Thursday afternoon and Saturday evening, late model stock cars, featuring the 1061 through 1963 models, hold their first one quarter mile racing events of the season, with six big racing events in cluding a marathon feature each day plus a big jalopy de struction derby event. Thurs day events get underway at 1:30 p.m. with time trials with the first racing event set for 2:30 o'clock while Saturday's night stock car affair begin ning with trials at 7:30 o'clock Car Trouble Ends Bid By Pollard Portland OJPU Don Nel son of Eugene won the SO-lap main event at the Portland Speedway Sunday before 2.533 racing fans. Nelson trailed Art Pollard of Med ford for 24 laps until Pollard's car lost a ring gear and pinion. " Pollard had the fastest qual ifying time with 23.33 seconds for the half mile. and the fir;t racing event set for 8:30 o'clock. The stock cars will have all of their 1963 models compet ing in the event with Art Watts' new Ford Fastback ready for action; Carl Joiner, Dick Getty and Jack McCoy driving new Chevs.; Bill Amick, Dodge and Royce Hag erty, Mercury. Hal Beal in a '62 Dodge and current point leader will be in action with Johnny Smythe in a '62 Ford; Ernie Stirley and Bob Gregg in '62 Mercs plus all of the top 1961 and 1960 models also competing. Friday night and Sunday afternoon's racing events will see over 100 junkers compet ing in jalopy destruction der bies with eight smashup events set for each perform ance. Friday's events will get un derway at 7:30 p.m. with the first smashup starting at 8:30 o'clock. Sunday's events will start with trials at 1 p.m., smashup racing at 2:30 o'clock. Salem -WPli- Portland State baseball coach Roy Love and recently resigned Lewis and Clark basketball coac'' Jim Goddard were named co-winners of the NAIA District 2 Coach of the Year award Sat urday night. . Goddard re signed to accept the basketball coach's position at Idaho. Schulz moved into lone fourth spot on Friday with a 9 to 7 verdict over Communi cation Workers of America. Dave Henry got four hits for the Garage team and Harold Jordan three of the Schulz 16. Don Cain and Norm Lunkford pitched for the victors and fanned a total of eight. Benson's verdict was in the 4 to 1 first game of seven in nings. Central Point won the non-counting five-inning sec od game 7 to 4. He struck out six batters and walked four. The lone CP run was in the seventh inning on a base on balls, a hit batter, an error and a wild pitch. The Falcons picked up all their runs in the third inning SOC Second In Tennis Salem Pacific university won the NAIA District 2 ten nis tournament here over the week end with 5 points to 4 by Southern Oregon college. Linfield college was third with 1. Lund Chin, Pacific, defeat ed Dick Blacksmith, 6-2, 6-3, in singles finals. In doubles Chin and Rhody Rodolico won from SCC's team of Black smith and Ken Stevenson, 6-2, 6-0. Memphis Open Delayed Again Memphis, Tenn. - lUPfi - The final round of the $50,000 Memphis Open was due to get under way this afternoon after two reschedulings in as many days due to heavy rains. Eight-nine golfcrs-81 pros and B amateurs-remained in Ihe field after Sunday's elated final round was washed out by thunderstorms. PGA officials moved qual ifications for the U.S. Open, which had been set for today, up to Tuesday. Pros who were signed to qualify at other courses will be allowed to qualify at Memphis, accord ing to Mark Thomas, toutna- I mcnt supervisor. on a double by Joe Parisotto, singles by John Gray and John Paxton, a walk and an error. Parisotto had two hits for the Falcons and Benson tripled. Wayne Clay pitched a five hitter for the Studs. He fan ned eight and walked four. CP got two runs in the first inning of the second game. Three errors, a wild pitch and a hit by Lou Alvarez pro duced the markers. Two mis- cues were on catcher over throws. A Dave Twedcll trip le highlighted a three - run third inning for the Studs. There were three errors, a hit batter and a sacrifice by Bob Stroh. Twedcll for CP and John Gray for Klamath each had two hits. "I know there has been 'lot of talk about winding up the cup matches because of runaway American successes but this competition must be continued," said Richard Tufts of Pinchurst, N. C "It is one of the few golf championships for the ama teurs of the U. S. and Britain to meet in international com petition," the American lead cr added. ''The championships between the two nations nar rows each year. "This year, for instance, we received an almighty fright We thought after the first day we had lost the cup but our boys fought back magnificent ly to retain it." The Yanks fell behind, 6-3, on opening day Friday but bounced back Saturday to win all four foursomes and five of the remaining eight singles matches. That gave the U. Memorial Field, White City - Rogue Valley Dairy Maids divided their week end games here with Eugene McCulloch Chain Saw in the Northwest Women's Major Softball league. Eugene won 3 to 2 on Sat urday evening and the Maids 3 to 1 yesterday afternoon. The Sawyers collected what proved their winning run Saturday in the sixth inning on a hit by Pat Lewis, a walk and a wild pitch. They scored twice in the second inning on two bases on balls and two errors. Rogue Valley gained Its tallies one at a time. In the first frame Ihe run was on a walk, stolen base and hit by Ellen Callaghan and in the fifth the score was on a Sue Conway single and two errors. Two-Hitter Eugene pitcher Nancy Wcl- born held the Maids to two hits while walking four and whiffing 10. RV's Fat Barron walked eight and fanned eight a four hitter. Lewis got two safe blows for Eugene. All of Rogue Valley's runs yesterday were in the open ing stanza on hits by Doris Hickson, Barron and Sharon Isaacs, an error and a sacri fice by Callaghan. For the Eugene run in the fourth Inning Linda Nicmi tripled and Jan Akins singled. Callaghan limited Eugene to three hits, walking one and striking out two. Welborn walked two and struck out five.
