Seven other climbers already had per ished on the smoky volcano that season and there had been warnings that the three of us also were playing Russian roulette with fate. Twelve hours after leaving our over night camp, we discovered that we had strayed from the "easy-to-climb" trail up Popo's east side and were instead on the rugged and treacherous north face. Jos6 Garza, a fellow student at Mexico City College, who had agreed to be our guide, was the only one with real climbing experience. My other companion, Don Hartman, had ex plored mountains in his native Tennessee, but they were molehills compared to Popo.
