constipation. If this occurs, supplement your
daily diet with all-vegetable SARAKA.

THE
Killer Mountain
By DONALD OSMOLAK
as told to Charles and Bonnie Remsberg
AS we clawed and chopped our
Lway across the glaring ice
cap of Mexico's Mount Popocate
petl, I remembered with a chill
why the natives called it the
Killer Mountain.
Seven other climbers already had per
ished on the smoky volcano that season
and there had been warnings that the three
of us also were playing Russian roulette
with fate.
Twelve hours after leaving our over
night camp, we discovered that we had
strayed from the "easy-to-climb" trail up
Popo's east side and were instead on the
rugged and treacherous north face.
It was a route far too hazardous for

novice climbers like us. Jos6 Garza, a
fellow student at Mexico City College, who
had agreed to be our guide, was the only
one with real climbing experience. My
other companion, Don Hartman, had ex
plored mountains in his native Tennessee,
but they were molehills compared to Popo.
As for me, at 22 I had never been higher
than the top of the tallest skyscraper back
home in Chicago. Yet, there we were
scrambling up the 17,887-foot Popo the
loftiest active volcano in North .America.
Several times that Saturday, Feb. 14,
1960, Hartman and I lost our footing and
had begun heart-stopping slides down
ward. But we had been able to lash our
picks into the ground and wrench ourselves
to a stop.
Finally, 60 yards from Popo's majestic
