(UPI) Bedford Grapplers (not With Medford high's wrestlers took the last three bouts Sat urday to come from behind and tie Klamath Falls 20 to 20 in a Southern Oregon confer ence match here. The Tornado trailed 8 to 20 before Tom Metz, 168, Terry Winetrout, 178, Mike May field, 191, and Jeff Hardrath, heavyweight, gained decis ions. Each team posted six decis ions and there was one draw in the match. Neither team won a bout by a pin. Good Job The Medfords wrestled as good as they have all year ac cording to Coach Ralph Mon roe. He pointed out that "even those who lost did a good job" and that a couple of Tornadoes who lost came close to winning. Better conditioning, Mon roe indicated, was the differ ence between the tie and Med ford's earlier loss to the Pel icans. Lin Casciato, 08, was victor in wrestling his first varsity bout for Medford. The Hornets, down five points with two 'minutes to go, splurged for 10 markers to overcome a iired, inspired and upset-minded Phoenix Pi rate team in the Rogue league basketball campaign. Score was 59 to "4. Nod over the Buccaneers gave the Hornets a three game bulge over their nearest conference adve.sary as Illi nois Valley dumped second place Lakeview 81 to 65. And, Eagle Point pulled In to a deadlock for second spot by trimming Rogue River 69 to 49. Phoenix led the Henley delegat'on at Phoenix 54 to 49 after Jon Granby's Jump shot with 2:23 left to play. But, with two minutes on the clock LeVoy Young roped a long Henley jumper. Kent Gooding came through with tipin and with 42 seconds left another long jump shot put Henley ahead 55 to 54. Played Heart Out Gooding added a free he-ve and Earl Allbritton three more in the remaining time. A Phoenix aggregation. which played it heart ouv with a magnificent team effort, led the Hornets at every intermis sion, 18 to 11, 31 to 27 and 43 to 41. The Pirates never trailed the Hornets until 'ton- ley's closing spurt and they had several seven point 'eads and twice were on toD by eight. A terrific defensive job by Dave Johnson held high scor ing Kent Gooding of the Hornets down. Gooding net ted only three field buckets, and one of them was after Johnson had retired to a standing ovation on his limit of five fouls. The game's high scorer was Phoenix's Rick Bolz with 22 points. Granby had 12 for the Pirates. Young for Henley pui in 14 points. With seven free throws Gooding had 13. Phoenix had Its last seven point spread at 48 to 41 after four free shots by Dale Sn er and a jump shot by Bolz had been added to the third pe riod score. Young and Good ing each put in a pair from the free line but a Bolz la-, in made it 50 to 45. Young added a jumper an '. C jding two more gifters for 50 to 49. Bolz hit twice from the free stripe and Granby got a jump er for 54 to 49. Eagles Shoot .408 Phoenix also lost John Barker on fouls in the final moments. Eagle Point shot .408 from the field and headed the re bounding 65 to 24 as it had quarter differences of 18 to 13, 34 to 28 and 50 to 38. Charles Pomeroy had 23 pointers and there were three other Eagles in twin totals. Tom Davidson scored 18 for Rogue River. Richard Short and Pomeroy each named 17 rebounds for EP. The Eagles settled down after a ragged first half and fast broke better than they have in number of games. Rogue River hustle helped the Chiefs keep pace in the first half. Wilbur Boatvright joined with P meroy in spur ring the second half offen sive. EP hit 29 of 71 from the field and RR 18 of 57 for .316. The Eagles put in 11 of 17 gift tries and Rogue River 13 of 25. MEDFORD, Everything went smooth as they broke well, moved well and shot at the hot clip. IV took the lead for good in the first quarter and moved in the strong command in the second. Quarter scores fa vored the Cougars 20 to 16, 46 to 29 and 63 to 44. Ron Thornhill had 19 points for the Cougars and Dan Leahy 20 and Fred Williams and Dennis Warren 19 apiece tor Lakeview 's Honkers. Gellert. with 27 points on Friday against Henley, had 61 total for the week end games. In junior varsity play Illi nois Valley won 48 to 38 and Phoenix 60 to 55. OCE's Wolves Down SOC's Red Raiders Ashland - With the aid of an exceptionally outstanding second half Oregon College of Education basketball team topped the Raiders of South ern Oregon college 65-57 in Monmouth Saturday after noon. This was the second week end victory for OCE giving them a firm second place po sition in the Oregon Colle giate conference. The Raiders have a 4 win 9 loss record. SOC started the baU rolling by taking the tip. The Raiders worked the sphere around trying to get an opening for a good shot. After some fast floor play OCE's Wolves gain ed control and capitalized with two to take the first bucket. SOC retaliated with two quick counters. As the first period went on it became apparent that the contest would be close up to the last minute. In the closing miri' utes of the first half SOC was trailing 29-33, but Jerry Shults, the Raiders ailing starting forward, missed a free throw, but gained the rebound and two points leav ing SOC down one field goal. Dave Hughes of SOC was not going to let the period end this way as he stole the ball from OCE and went all the way for the tying score, end ing the half 33 all. With the advent of the final section, SOC's squad came on the hardwood with an extra ordinary amount of strength. The Raiders took an immedi ate lead. Little Bill Franks, the Raiders hustling junior guard gained a free toss, which sent the score to the Raiders favor by one point. Freshman Ed Hill took Frank's second attempt and sent it back to the hoop to advance the Raider lead by two more tallies. Still not satisfied with their lead the Raiders hit for two more tak ing an eight point bulge over OCE. After seven minutes had passed the Wolves came to life and began to hit the hoop. Darrell Brandt OCE's first string guard brought the home team to a tie with the visiting Raiders on a free throw. Brandt missed his sec ond toss but followed the ball and came out with the re bound which he sent back to the basket for the counter to tend OCE ahead 44-46 with 9:30 of playing time left. Stanford, Washington Deadlocked United Press International Stanford and Washington tied for first place in the Big Six basketball race, both have important contests lined up this week end which should crack the deadlock. The Indians face California in a home and home series while the Huskies host South ern California on Saturday. UCLA, which was looking hot before suddenly bowing to Stanford last Saturday, is Idle until Feb. 22 when the Bruins return to the Tribe's cracker box gym for revenge, The West Coast Athletic conference also had a near tie for first place with three teams jammed at the top. They were the University of San Francisco (5-0) and Santa Clara and St. Mary's who each had 4-0 marks. Some thing has to give this Tuesday when Santa Clara faces St. Mary's. The Gaels then meet USF on Saturday. this was as close as they could come for the remainder of the game. Southern Oregon ended the game with a .433 shooting average from the floor with Oregon College hitting at a .369 clip. S. figure skating queen, pretty Lorraine Han lon, 17, said her performance in winning the women's crown at the national cham pionships Sunday was "disap pointing." Miss Hanlon, who was sec ond to Barbara Roles Pursley last year, fell down once dur ing her free skating exhibi tion. "It was stupid," she said of her fall. Runner-up Christine Haig. ler, 15, Colorado Springs, was very pleased with her show ing in the free skating. Andy Marzich Wins Tourney St. Louis - (UPD - Andy Mar zich pocketed a $5,000 first prize for winning the St. Louis professional bowling tournamet here and hurried to telephone his wife, Lorl, in Long Beach, Calif. But Marzich, who defeated defending champion Joe Jos eph of Lansing, Mich., 238 188, purposely didn't tell his wife that he won the Satur day night tournament, "The tournament is taped and shown on television two hours later in California," said Marzich. "I didn't want to spoil the ending for her, so I just told Lorl that I was among the four who would appear on the show." Joseph took home $2,500 in second prize money and Ed Lubanski of Detroit got $1,250 for his third place showing.
