Good Job
The Medfords wrestled as

of Tornadoes who lost came

Better conditioning, Mon

unbeaten on the maplecourt
on Saturday night but they
had to buzz and I, am to escape
from quite scare.
The Hornets, down five
points with two 'minutes to
go, splurged for 10 markers
to overcome a iired, inspired
and upset-minded Phoenix Pi
rate team in the Rogue league
basketball campaign. Score
was 59 to "4.
Nod over the Buccaneers
gave the Hornets a three
game bulge over their nearest
conference adve.sary as Illi
nois Valley dumped second
place Lakeview 81 to 65.
And, Eagle Point pulled In
to a deadlock for second spot
by trimming Rogue River 69
to 49.
Phoenix led the Henley
delegat'on at Phoenix 54 to
49 after Jon Granby's Jump
shot with 2:23 left to play.
But, with two minutes on the
clock LeVoy Young roped a
long Henley jumper. Kent
Gooding came through with
tipin and with 42 seconds
left another long jump shot
put Henley ahead 55 to 54.
Played Heart Out
Gooding added a free he-ve
and Earl Allbritton three
more in the remaining time.
A Phoenix aggregation.
which played it heart ouv with
a magnificent team effort, led
the Hornets at every intermis
sion, 18 to 11, 31 to 27 and
43 to 41. The Pirates never
trailed the Hornets until 'ton-
ley's closing spurt and they
had several seven point 'eads
and twice were on toD by
eight.
A terrific defensive job by
Dave Johnson held high scor
ing Kent Gooding of the
Hornets down. Gooding net
ted only three field buckets,
and one of them was after
Johnson had retired to a
standing ovation on his limit
of five fouls.
The game's high scorer was
Phoenix's Rick Bolz with 22
points. Granby had 12 for the
Pirates. Young for Henley pui
in 14 points. With seven free
throws Gooding had 13.
Phoenix had Its last seven
point spread at 48 to 41 after
four free shots by Dale Sn er
and a jump shot by Bolz had
been added to the third pe
riod score. Young and Good
ing each put in a pair from
the free line but a Bolz la-, in
made it 50 to 45. Young added
a jumper an '. C jding two
more gifters for 50 to 49.
Bolz hit twice from the free
stripe and Granby got a jump
er for 54 to 49.
Eagles Shoot .408
Phoenix also lost John
Barker on fouls in the final
moments.
Eagle Point shot .408 from
the field and headed the re
bounding 65 to 24 as it had
quarter differences of 18 to
13, 34 to 28 and 50 to 38.
Charles Pomeroy had 23
pointers and there were three
other Eagles in twin totals.
Tom Davidson scored 18 for
Rogue River. Richard Short
and Pomeroy each named 17
rebounds for EP.
The Eagles settled down
after a ragged first half and
fast broke better than they
have in number of games.
Rogue River hustle helped
the Chiefs keep pace in the
first half. Wilbur Boatvright
joined with P meroy in spur
ring the second half offen
sive.
EP hit 29 of 71 from the
field and RR 18 of 57 for

OCE's Wolves Down
SOC's Red Raiders
Ashland - With the aid of
an exceptionally outstanding
second half Oregon College of
Education basketball team
topped the Raiders of South
ern Oregon college 65-57 in
Monmouth Saturday after
noon. This was the second week
end victory for OCE giving
them a firm second place po
sition in the Oregon Colle
giate conference. The Raiders
have a 4 win 9 loss record.
SOC started the baU rolling
by taking the tip. The Raiders
worked the sphere around
trying to get an opening for
a good shot. After some fast
floor play OCE's Wolves gain
ed control and capitalized
with two to take the first
bucket. SOC retaliated with
two quick counters. As the
first period went on it became
apparent that the contest
would be close up to the last
minute. In the closing miri'
utes of the first half SOC was
trailing 29-33, but Jerry
Shults, the Raiders ailing
starting forward, missed a
free throw, but gained the
rebound and two points leav
ing SOC down one field goal.
Dave Hughes of SOC was not
going to let the period end
this way as he stole the ball
from OCE and went all the
way for the tying score, end
ing the half 33 all.
With the advent of the final
section, SOC's squad came on
the hardwood with an extra
ordinary amount of strength.
The Raiders took an immedi
ate lead. Little Bill Franks,
the Raiders hustling junior
guard gained a free toss,
which sent the score to the
Raiders favor by one point.
Freshman Ed Hill took
Frank's second attempt and
sent it back to the hoop to
advance the Raider lead by
two more tallies. Still not
satisfied with their lead the
Raiders hit for two more tak
ing an eight point bulge over
OCE.
After seven minutes had
passed the Wolves came to
life and began to hit the hoop.
Darrell Brandt OCE's first
string guard brought the
home team to a tie with the
visiting Raiders on a free
throw. Brandt missed his sec
ond toss but followed the ball
and came out with the re
bound which he sent back to
the basket for the counter to
tend OCE ahead 44-46 with
9:30 of playing time left.
Franks brought the Raiders
within one point of OCE, but
