MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON .niDAY. iEBRUARY a, 1963 B 3 100 Per Cent Pay Cut Quarterback as Peace Corps Member May Benefit Washington Redskins By DICK WEST Washington -(UPD- Almost everyone here except Rep. Victor Wickersham thought it sa was appropri ate lor grid iron star Nor man Snead to go to wo r k for the Peace Corps. Snead cur rently is the quarter back for the Washin 2 1 0 n Redskins, who for years have been one of the most peaceable corps in professional football. It was generally felt that his association with such an unbellicose organization as the Redskins would make him ideally suited for an off-season job as a Peace Corps con sultant. The Redskins are noted for having off-seasons even when the season is in full swing. By the tame token it was surmised that the Redskins, in turn, might veil b.nefit from Snead's experience with the Peace Corps. The corps is devoted to pro viding technical advice and assistance to underdeveloped countries. A look at their record for the past decade will lead you to the con clusion that the Redskins cer tainly qualify as underde veloped. The hope is that Snead will pick up some pointers that might be useful in rehabili tating the Redskins. While re STAR -By CLAY R. Despite the evidence that Snead and the Peace Corps were made for each other, Wickersham objected to his employment, basing his dis sent not so much on the prin ciple of the thing as the money. At a Democratic congress man from Oklahoma, he took the position that $75 a day was a somewhat ex cessive fee for the Peace Corps to be paying a rookie consultant In Oklahoma, football teams are more famed for their ferocity than their gen erosity. It was understandable that Wickersham would be opposed to a policy of Peace Corpsmen at any price. Either because of Wicker sham's protest or in spite of it, Peace Corps Director Sar gent Shriver quickly convert ed his consultant to an unpaid status, making Snead the Peace Corps equivalent of a dollar-a-year man. Snead thus became one of the few professional athletes to absorb a 100 per cent pay cut in a single off-season. Not even George Preston Marshall, the open - handed owner of the Redskins, has been able to go that far. When Shriver leaves the govern ment, Marshall may want to hire him as a consultant.
