Crater High Trips Pels in Overtime Central Point-Crater high's Comets, with never give up fire, overcame Klamath Falls here Friday night in an over time spine-chilling thriller to rise into a tie for the basket; ball leadership in the South ern Oregon conference. The Fireballs fought from behind in both regulation time and in the extra period to edge the defending league champion Pelicans 59 to 57 in giant-killer" effort. Howard Tomlinson drove the length of the court for a tying bucket in the dying seconds of the fourth quarter to send the battle into added session. Lou Alvarez, Paul Bransom and Mike Glincs provided the vital counters in the overtime. Triumph gave the Comets a 1-1 conference standing - the same as Grants Pass before the Cavemen met Medford last night. Klamath (2-2) dropped into a knot with Medford. . . Crater, ahead 42 to 38 at the end of the third quarter, fell behind in the fourth. With 1V2 minutes to play, Klamath was in front 51 to 47. Then, with 47 seconds left KF's Dick Scott missed a free toss op portunity. The . Comets re bounded and Alvarez goaled on a long one-hand shot from the side for 51 to 49. There were 12 seconds left when Hal Holman drew a one nd one foul. He missed. Tom linson grabbed the rebound and boomed toward the Crater buckt. He shot from about free line range. The ball went into the hoop and out, lay dead on the rim for what seemed several seconds, then rolled and plopped through the net for a 51-all knot. Wayne Chambcrland made it 53 to 51 at the start of the extra with a jumper to the right of the key. Alvarez hemped a onc-hander from far out. But, Grover Dahn came back with two free heaves for 55 to 53 for Klamath. Alvarez tied the fracas next from the gift stripe. With 30 seconds left Bransom sank the second of two tip up tries off Tomlinson's miss from the field for Crater 57 to 55. Summerfield Rebounds Darryl Summerfield, who turned in a great defensive effort for the Comets, snared the rebound on a missed shot by the Pelicans' Fred Kclley. Crater took time out with 13 seconds left. The Comets then played the ball in from mid court. This abili ty to apply desire and come out in front is "a sign of a good club," he said. Better Defense Crater had .bettor defense in the second half and appear ed to have a rebounding edge on Klamath over the last two periods in fashioning its vic tory over a much taller ad versary. The Comets also cap italized on Pelican violations in these latter panels of the game. Summerfield gave the big Pels a healthy battle beneath the boards.
