Crater High Trips
Pels in Overtime
Central Point-Crater high's
Comets, with never give up
fire, overcame Klamath Falls
here Friday night in an over
time spine-chilling thriller to
rise into a tie for the basket;
ball leadership in the South
ern Oregon conference.
The Fireballs fought from
behind in both regulation time
and in the extra period to
edge the defending league
champion Pelicans 59 to 57 in
giant-killer" effort.
Howard Tomlinson drove the
length of the court for a tying
bucket in the dying seconds
of the fourth quarter to send
the battle into added session.
Lou Alvarez, Paul Bransom
and Mike Glincs provided the
vital counters in the overtime.
Triumph gave the Comets a
1-1 conference standing - the
same as Grants Pass before
the Cavemen met Medford last
night. Klamath (2-2) dropped
into a knot with Medford. . .
Crater, ahead 42 to 38 at
the end of the third quarter,
fell behind in the fourth. With
1V2 minutes to play, Klamath
was in front 51 to 47. Then,
with 47 seconds left KF's Dick
Scott missed a free toss op
portunity. The . Comets re
bounded and Alvarez goaled
on a long one-hand shot from
the side for 51 to 49.
There were 12 seconds left
when Hal Holman drew a one
nd one foul. He missed. Tom
linson grabbed the rebound
and boomed toward the Crater
buckt. He shot from about
free line range. The ball went
into the hoop and out, lay
dead on the rim for what
seemed several seconds, then
rolled and plopped through
the net for a 51-all knot.
Wayne Chambcrland made
it 53 to 51 at the start of
the extra with a jumper to
the right of the key. Alvarez
hemped a onc-hander from far
out. But, Grover Dahn came
back with two free heaves
for 55 to 53 for Klamath.
Alvarez tied the fracas next
from the gift stripe. With 30
seconds left Bransom sank the
second of two tip up tries off
Tomlinson's miss from the
field for Crater 57 to 55.
Summerfield Rebounds
Darryl Summerfield, who
turned in a great defensive
effort for the Comets, snared
the rebound on a missed shot
by the Pelicans' Fred Kclley.
Crater took time out with 13
seconds left. The Comets then
played the ball in from mid
court. Summerfield took it in
the backcourt and dribbled up

from the field 23 to 21. The
Central Pointers collected
their field buckets by "out

foe. Crater put up 73 shots to
the Pels' 51. In the second
half and extra while Klam
ath was making nine of 18
field tries, the Comets fired
at the hoop on 42 occasions.
Klamath's full game field
average was .451 while Cra
ter hit at .287.
"J tell you, it was a thrill
er and a half," said Crater
Coach Lloyd Hoffine of the
game. He noted, of his team,
"They made a lot of mistakes
but kept hustling and never
gave up and won." This abili
ty to apply desire and come
out in front is "a sign of a
good club," he said.
Better Defense
Crater had .bettor defense
in the second half and appear
ed to have a rebounding edge
on Klamath over the last two
periods in fashioning its vic
tory over a much taller ad
versary. The Comets also cap
italized on Pelican violations
in these latter panels of the
game.
Summerfield gave the big
Pels a healthy battle beneath
the boards. Bransom's numcr
ous rebounds spoke for them
selves. Alvarez turned in his
best performance of the sea
son. The Comets also got a
steady performance from Tom
linson who went home from
school earlier in the day be

feeling.
Klamath Falls had 16 to 10
quarter and 32 to 27 halftime
margins. Crater-had a start
ing gap of 7 to 1 but the
Pels caught up at 10-each and
forged to 18 to 10 with long
jump shots by Holman, Al
varez, with several bucket
shots by Holman. Alvarez
with several buckets, and
Tomlinson then sparked a ral
ly and Crater closed the Klam
ath span to 26 to 24.
Comets Ahead 44-38
With two minutes played in
the third quarter Crater
caught the Pels at 33-all. The
Comets then erased a 36 to
34 KF lead to go in front 40
to 38. Summerficld's two free
throws and Bransom's basket
were the margin of the Crater
lead. The gap was six points
at 44 to 38 just after the last
quarter began.
Klamath came back with a
three point play by Chamber
land and picked up a couple
field goals for a 45 to 44
lead. Five minutes were left
to play and with four minutes
to go the count was 47 to 46.

Standford Hires Ralston
As Head Football Coach
Stanford, Calif. - IUPD - John
Ralston, who used to flatten
Stanford halfbacks when he
played for the arch-rival Uni

over to the enemy today as
the Indians' new football

The highly successful Utah

Ralston, 35, didn't get the

Hardin had figured promi
