A review of the earnings statements of 25 major pro ducers showed that earnings at the end of nine months were on the average eight per cent higher, on a six per cent increase in sales, over the corresponding period a year previously. For two-thirds of those whose reports have been sur veyed, sales were five per cent to 11 per cent higher in the nine months period. Only one showed smaller sales than in the same period of 1961, and profit margins generally were higher. Not as Outstanding The third quarter showing in the paper industry, how ever, was not quite as out standing as was the picture in the first half of 1962. More than half of the companies re porting for the three months through September showed year-to-year sales gain rates less than those they reported in the first six months. On the general paper-packaging scene, paperback pro: duction had the prettiest pic ture. It may attain a new peak In 1962 when the final figures are in, and perhaps may be as high as six per cent above last year. Good demand has even al lowed some price increases in primary containerboard and box board, and the in creases were fairly well kept. Demand for printing papers and allied stock failed to im prove enough to allow price increases, and generally the usual autumn increase in these lines has been disap pointing, industry quarters said.
