OSU Tussles Seattle's Chieftains Seattle -fUPfi- Oregon State and Seattle, regarded as two nf the best basketball teams In the nation, collide in a season opening game at Seat tle tonight. The Beavers were ranked fifth in the nation and the chieftains were rated in a tie for 21st in the United Press International hoop poll this i week : Oregon State will match the scoring and rebounding tal ents of 7-foot junior center Mel Counts against the shoot- j ing of 6-4 senior guard Eddie Miles of Seattle. Veteran Coach Slats Gill of the Beavers will unveil a pair of sophomore guards in 6-font Jimmy Jarvis and 6-2 Frank Peters. Jarvis is rated as the most sensational freshman guard ever to perform at Ore gon State. Gill said he will start fi-4 senior Steve Pauly and 6-6 senior Tim Campbell at for wards to go with Counts, Jar vis and Peters. Oregon State posted a 24-5 record and went to the finals of the NCAA Western region al tournament last season. The Beavers will face Washington at Seattle Saturday night. At Portland, the Portland Pilots play host to Fresno State in games tonight and Saturday night. Crater and Grants Pass each three and Klamath Falls two. Named from state cham pion Medford on the top of fensive unit were Lloyd Hammons. end; Gary Miller, tackle; Jerry Fann and Jim Snodgrass, guards, and Jack Lowery back. Grants Pass se lections were Bob Shepard, end; Bob Lindeman, tackle; Pat Edgerton, guard; Glenn Scott, center, and Terry Isa bell, back. Mike Glines, Crater, and Ron Hitchcock, Klamath I Falls, backs, rounded out the team. Shepard and Hammons were the only unanimous choices. Lowery got all pos sible points but one and Isa bell and Glines all but two. Tics in voting resulted in more than one being named to the two offensive and one defensive units. Twelve play ers were chosen for first team offensive. Fifteen gained second team offensive positions and 14 were named to the one defensive crew. Coaches and squads of each conference school were asked to submit ballots on an all opponent basis. Tabulation was by the Mail Tribune sports department. In the of fensive tabulation two points were given for a first team vote and one for second team selection. Defensive poll was on a single point per .vote basis. Glinei Repeals Two or more votes on of fense and one or more on de fensive qualified a player for honorable mention. Balloting indicated a wide divergence of opinion. More than 70 players received votes. Glines. Comet quarterback, is the only repeater from the 1961 first offensive all-star team. Hammons and Isabell moved up from the second team. Griffin and Neathamcr repealed on the defensive team. The second offensive team Included five from Medford, four from Crater and three each from Grants Pass and Klamath Falls. Closest voting for first team offensive berths was at tackle. For the fourth back field spot Hitchcock nipped Medford's Miles 11 points to 10. Notre Dame Era Seems Dawning United Press International A new era seet to be dawning for the Noire Dame basketball team. The I'ish, who won only six of 2.1 games last season, ran their record for the new campaign to 3-0 by rolling to a 101-70 victory over St. Fran cis (Pa.) Thursday night at South Bend, Ind. John Matthews, a senior guard, scored eight points in the first six minutes to help Notre Dame to a 56-31 lead at halttime. Matthews wound up with 20 points. Sandy Williams of St. Fran cis also scored 20 to match Matthews for game scoring honors. Illini Win Second Illinois, prepping for ils ap pearance in the Holiday fes tival tournament at Madison Square Garden, Dec. 2fi-2fl, overpowered the touring Uni versity nf Washington team, 99-55, for its second straight victory. Although the seventh-ranked Illini are loaded with tal ented sophomores, seniors Dave Downey and Bob Starnes wreckrd the Pacific Coast visitor. with their steady shooting. Downey scored 17 points in 1 R -j minutes of the first half and finished with 23 while Starnes added 1R Unbeaten Georgia Tech scored its third straight vic tory by polishing off visiting Southern Methodist, 73-5B. Dan Miles and Mike Neathamer may be starters for the Torna do varsity this evening. Fifth man depends on the condition of Rich Benner's ankle. He turned it in practice last night. If Bonner is able, he'll likely get a forward assignment. The Black Tornado is behind other A-l schools of this area by three weeks in getting ready for the hoop campaign. A good percentage of the Tor nado squad reported only last Monday for basketball, after completing a state champion ship football season. Medford met the two roast teams on their own floors last December with Marshfield beating the Tornado 68 to 46 and the Big Wind trimming North Bend 54 to 46.
