These valuation procedures apply lor all private western Oregon timber land except that on classified reforestation land and that on land classi fied under the small tract optional tax law. These valuation procedures established three timber classes known as reproduc tion, young growth, old growth. The law gives the method of arriving at the true cash value for assessment pur poses for each of these classes. For old growth the true cash value is 30 per cent of ita Immediate harvest value except for owners who could show their timber being har vested in a longer than 30 year period. In that case, the true cash value would be 25 per cent of the immediate harvest value. The 25 per cent valuation factor for a tract was estab lished only upon application of the owner and if his cutting rate was slow enough. Owners of tracts establish ed through report to the coun ty assessor and tax commis sion before Jan. 1 must either file a description by Jan. 1, 1963 of any additions or de letions from the tract or file a statement that the tract is unchanged. Owners of old growth tim ber (over 90 years) who have not established a tract and feel their timber is being cut at a longer than 30-year rate as shown by the past three years' harvest, may establish a tract and receive the 25 per cent valuation factor by applying to the county as sessor and tax commission. Tract owners must meet these requirements or the timber will be assessed at a true cash value of 30 per cent of its Immediate harvest values. West Palm Beach, Fla.,-WPD -Former Ambassador Joseph P. Y. -IUPIU A 650 pound black bear, possibly the largest ever killed in North America, was shot by a pro fessional guide in the Adiron dack mountains, the Conser vation department disclosed Thursday. Robert Avery, a guide and ! hotel owner at Arietta,; brought down the huge bruin j with a single shot. Conserva- tion officials, viewing the 562-pound dressed bulk of the animal, said it was the largest black bear killed since they had been keeping records. The animal measured one inch under six feet from tip of nose to tip of tail, officials said. It took Avery two days j to drag the carcass 4.5 miles out of the wilderness. He re ported seeing tracks made by even larger bears. The long-awaited pic lure "Cleopatra" will open at the Holly next week. All local Egyptians will be admitted free but they will have to buy their own pop corn.
