You may even be going out to the woods, to cut your own. Or, you may plan to buy one at the nursery to trans plant outdoors after the hol idays. No matter whether you have your particular tree in mind, or not, here's a run down to some ol tlic more popular and attractive Christ mas greens: Douglas fir: A fragrant and lone-lasting tree, this ever green is a favorite on the West Coast and in the Plains stairs. The dark yellow-green or blue-green needles, strip ed on the underside, are flat and pliable, about an inch long, and are attached all around the branch. Popular Choice Balsam fir: This is one of the most popular choices for trees because of its symmetri cal shape, fragrance, and long lasting qualities. You can identify it by its needles, which arc about one-half to one inch long: deep, shiny green on the upper surface, gray-green with two broad white stripes on the under side; flat with rounded tips. They grow singly (and thirk ly) on opposite sides of the hranch, forming a flat spray. The While fir is similar, bid has longer needles that are pale grcc to whitish and curve upward and outward. White pine: Not as popular as Scotch pine, but many folks prefer this species be cause of its rich hluc-grcen color. Its long needles (three to live inches) grow in clus ters of five (Scotch pine has two), and are slender and flexible. As with ninst other pines the long needles give the tree fuller, bushier appearance than fits or spruces. Culler pines (Virginia, Hen or Norway. Pitch. Austrian, etc ) can also he recognized by their lung needles grow ing in clusters lilack spruce: Like oilier spruces (Norway. White, Dlue. eic.) lilack spruce is best for an outdoor tree or decor. i tions liecau.se it sheds its needles after a few days in doors. Leaves Bump Needles are one-fourth to three-fourths of an inch long, pale blue - green, stiff and sharp-pointed, and are attach ed all around the branch. (One way to distinguish a spruce is to pull off a needle - it leaves a bump.) Often it has rounded cones about an inch long. Spruces are not as fragrant as firs or pines. Eastern red cedar: This tree is most popular in the South, it lias short (about one- hnlf inch) awl-shaped or scale like needles, which are ycl low- or blue-green. Sometimes it lias small, dark berries. The famous cedar aroma Is released only when the' wood is cut; it's not very fragrant otherwise. Hemlock: Not a good in door tree because needles drop quickly, but makes a handsome outdoor wreath The flat needles arc about one-half inch long: dark green on top, paler undercath with two while stripes: and round ed or notched at lip. Needles are attached all around the branch. Shoe Polisher Is Suggested as Gifl Todi.y men iirc more con scious than ever of lootvvciir styling and pity more atten tion to their ishocs.
