Salem - IUPII - An interest ing sidelight to the fast clos ing Oregon political campaign t is tne tact that Democrat ic Sen. Wayne Morse and Re publican Gov. Mark Hatfield haven't said one mean thine about each other. The two Douglas Gripp longtime an tagonists haven't even men tioned each other's name. - There appear to be some good reasons. Morse, feeling a strong in stinct of self-preservation, namely reelection, is playing it cool this year. ,i He is not the slasher and cutter of years past. He has been working on the states manship image and - so far -hasn't even had much to say about his Republican oppon ent, Sig Unander. Also, lo be recalled is the savage 1958 campaign when sn attack on Hatfield back fired. ; - Morse dredged up a fatal traffic accident in which Hat field was involved. The fol lowing tide of public indig nation went against Morse and contributed to Hatfield's margin of victory. Hatfield's reasons for say ing nothing derogatory about Morse in this campaign are different. While he has said nothing against Morse, he hasn't said anything in behalf of Unan der either. Similarly, Unan der has ignored Hatfield's campaign. The Hatfield - Unander cool ness advanced in the May, 1958 election when Hatfieid jumped into the primary and defeated Unander for the GOP nomination for gover nor. Things have never been the same since. Unander says Hatfield "hasn't campaigned with me or against me. He has his hands full, and I have my hands full." Hatfield says the same thing, commenting further that "I have rendered any assistance I have been asked render." Unander hasn't ask for any. Oberman, Dr. "vgj Spock and Dr. I am not qualified to say whether they are the best authori- w ties, but there is no doubt that they are Ihe cheapest. Dr. Oberman is a pediatri cian friend of ours. When the black plague or some similar malady, such as a runny nose, smites one of our darlings, we make it a point lo invite Dr. Oberman to dinner. "Since you're coming out anyway," we say, after he ac cepts, "how about bringing your bag along." This is the only way I know of to get a house call for the price of two Iamb chops. Our second authority. Dr. Spock, is the author of the well known book "Baby and Child Care." We consult it on the nights when Dr. Ob erman has another dinner en gagement. Our third authority, Dr. Parker, is not actually a li censed M.D., but has a small private practice composed of her grandchildren. Her con sultations not only are grat is, but virtually unavoidable. To this impressive array we have just added a fourth authority, Dr. Walter W. Sack ett Jr., who was kind enough lo send us a free copy of his new book "Bringing Up Ba bies." Dr. Sackelt has been the source of some controversy be cause of his rather unusual approach to infant feeding. He recommends starting the lit tle beggars on solid foods when they are just two days old. "Contrary to popular no tion," he says, "m others almost never have difficul ty introducing cereal when it is offered in ihe consis tency of putty." t boggled at that statement because it was so contrary to our own experience. If we didn't watch them, our chil dren all would swallow putty at the consistency of cereal. But forcing cereal down them was another matter. I have a theory that in fants have concealed in their jaws a tiny factory which manufactures pablum. This is the only way I can account for the fact that when you cram a spoonful of the stuff into their messy little kiss ers, two spoonfuls come back out. . Despite this disagreement, however, we are happy to welcome Dr. Sackelt to our stable of child care authori ties. Families Leaving Key West Outpost Key West, Fla. - WPD - Some Navy wives and their children are leaving this tense U.S. outpost only 00 miles from Cuba at the request of hus bands. "I'm scared and I think any one in his right mind would be," said Mrs. John E. Boon as she -boarded a plane Wednesday. "But I would stay here if it weren't for the chil dren." She was leading a four-year-old by the hand and carrying his one - month - old brother. They were headed for Roan oke, Va., the home of her's and her husband's parents. Boon, an instructor In the Navy's' sonar school, said he had been busy during the crisis over the Cuban block ade. "I can't concentrate on my work for worrying about my family," he said. Another Navy wife said she was leaving at the request of her husband, but she was afraid only "about my hus band." "He's on one of those ships in the blockade."
