Fallout Shelter Interest Mounts As Tension Grows By United Press International Civil Defease officials from Maine to California reported heightened interest today in fallout shelters among anx ious citizens aroused by the developing Cuban crisis. Authorities said the re quests for survival informa tion varied from "normal" in come areas to "considerable" in others. The concern on the part of Individuals was matched by stepped-up activity at official levels. But here again there appeared to be no over-all trend. Some communities continued with existing pro grams to meet the new threat. Headquarters Swamped Geographical location did not seem to make much dif ference in public attitudes. In midwest Missouri, as in the coastal state of Washing ton, people swamped local CD headquarters with many questions about fallout shel ters and food supplies. In other sections of the nation things were pretty much the same with Interest varying from one locality to another. The national Civil Defense headquarters In the nation's capital said it had sent out no new Information for peo pie to slock up on food but it is a part of the standard program to encourage people to maintain shelters with about a two-week supply of food and water. One Washington, D.C., dairy which sells water in five-gallon plastic bags for household reserve supply purposes said it had been swamped with calls beginning soon after President Kennedy made his Cuban quarantine speech Monday night. A spokesman for the na tional headquarters said that shelters for only several hundred thousand people have been slocked with food and water although fin mil lion shelter areas have been named and are scheduled to be stocked. Schools In Oregon prac ticed evacuation and alert techniques and in Washing ton CD officials reported a steady build-up of public interest. Trial of Hoffa Enters Fourth Day Nashville, Tenn. - (UPD - The $1 million conspiracy trial of teamsters boss James R. Hnf fa( moving slowly, entered its fourth day today with attor neys still trying to agree on a jury. Arguments over defense motions for a new Jury panel, and an exhaustive examina tion of prospective jurors, and closed conferences of at torneys with Federal Judge William E. Miller have mark ed the proceedings which got underway Monday. Hoffa has pleaded innocent to charges that he and the late George Brcnnan, former team sters vice president, accepted $1,088,057 from a Michigan trucking firm in violation of the Taft-Hartley Act. Hoffa and the trucking firm, Com mcrcial Carriers, Inc., Detroit, were Indicted on the charges May 18. Com mercial is pleading no contest. Nuclear Testing Injunction Denied Washington -H'P0- A federal district court Wednesday de nied a request for Dr. Linus Pauling and a group of 254 Dersons from 27 countries for an injunction against Presi dent Kennedy to stop U.b. nu clear testing. Two years ago another fed eral court here threw out a similar suit on the grounds that Dr. Pauling had no stand ing to sue and that the courts could not interfere with Presidential decisions on test ing. Judge Charles McLaugh lin said the previous decision, which was affirmed by the U.S. Supreme Court, applied to Wednesday's injunction re quest.
