OREGON Bonsai Trees Can Be Grown With Patience By RON MARTIN Jacksonville, Fla. - (UPD -An ancient, gnarled oak tree sitting on a coffee table la lure to impress visitors. Lilliputian trees can be bought for a handsome price at some nur series, but a patient person can stunt his own as a hobby with little cost. The Japinese call this cen turies-old art "Bonsai,'' and for a miniature potted tree to have real beauty, the Orient als believe it has to be tended for a century. Translating "bon" means shallow pot and ' sal means to plant, The secret of this dwarfing process is regulated starva tion and root pruning, plus person's own creative touch in shaping the tree. A green thumb is not needed, but the patience of a stamp collector is required: Cherish The Japanese cherish the tiny trees - no higher than a fool - as symbols of tranquil ity in a crowded land, and American hobbyists find growing them relaxing after a hard day's work in this ra pid space age era Some have found It profit- making hobby, for the Bon sai trees can be sold from $20 to several hundred dollars To begin this fascinating hobby, buy or remove a seed ling from the garden and aft er cutting from one-half to three-quarters of an inch off the bottom of the taproot. place it In a two-Inch pot with a drainage hole If an evergreen is to be stunted, the pot should con tain SO per cent soil, while flowering trees do better In 20 per cent sand. All mix tures should have 10 per cent lcafmold. Prune The top should be carefully pruned so the root system can furnish enough food and wa ter to keep the tree alive. Fer tillzcr should be used only when needed, perhaps twice a year, to keep the mlniiture within the desired size. . However, the lllllputaln should not be considered merely an Indoor plant. It must be grown outdoors a major part of the time, gen erally from spring to fall, but never in severe cold weather The pot should be placed up to Its rim In a protected spot in the garden. The roots must be kept closely confined to prevent their entering the rich sou from the bottom of the pot and assuming normal growth New growth should be pinched off Just above a bud or branch each spring to con trol Its shape. The taproot must be pruned each spring, also. The tree can be watered twice weekly, or when the soil is dry, by plunging the pot Into a pan of water. It should be left there until air bubbles stop rising to the sur face of the water, ' Originality The hobbyist's originality begins when the tree is four years old, or large enough to handle. This Is when the tree Is shaped to beauty. To give the tree that ccn turlcs-old look, the trunk and branches are wired with cop per wire. But it must not be distorted, but bent in a natur al curve to give It a wind blown appearence. The wire can be left on the tree for about two years, for It won t rust or scar. If the gnarled, storm-tossed appearance of trees growing In mountainous regions Is de sired, place a rock under '.he trunk. Every time the tree is re-potted, leave it a little higher out of the pot. In tune, the rock will be at the top of the soil and the heavy roots will cling lightly to the rock. In a few years a person at little cost - but with a lot of patience and regulated tre starvation - will have a Bon sai tree that can be used as a centerpiece on a table, a fes ture of a rock garden, at the edge of an outdoor pool, or in many other places.
