MEDFOHD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD, OREGON SUNDAY. OCTOBER 7. 196J World Series Resumes In New York Today; Yankees Still Favored M n .vs.: j J .:: f1 I; Sanford Displays Stamina As S F Giants Trim Yankees 2-0 in 2nd Game of Series Oregon Gets By San Jose St. 14-0 San Francisco -fllPD- Jack Sanford gave a hearty horse laugh today to those wise- LOST SIGHT OF BALL - San Francisco's Giants had their eyes on the ball for a mo ment in the fourth inning of second World Scries baseball game at San Francisco on Friday but lost sight of it long enough to allow New York Yankees Tom Tresh to . reach first base when he hit a pop up bunt ' with one on base. At top, pitcher Jack San ford reaches up for the ball as shortstop Jose Pagan reaches out. Behind Sanford, at right, is seond baseman Chuck Hiller and No. 12 is third baseman Jim Davenport. Sanford and Pagan collide, at bottom, as ball drops to ground. San Francisco won 2-0. - (UPI) Los Angeles - (UPD - The Los Angeles Dodgers probably will drop one of their two class AAA farm clubs-either 'Omaha of the American asso ciation or Spokane of the Pa cific Coast league. Dodgers vice president and director of minor league oper ations Fresco Thompson said Friday night the club thought it silly to compete against it self in shipping players to triple-A teams. It'll Be Stafford Vs. Pierce Washington Choice Over Ram Eleven Unitad Presi International Who ever figured that the Washington Redskins would be playing a game this season to keep pace with such Nation al Football league powers as the Green Bay Packers and Detroit Linos? Well, it happens Sunday. While the champion Pack ers and Lions square off at Green Bay in their early-season showdown for first place in the Western division, the amazin' Redskins are favored to stay atop the Eastern di vision with a victory over the Los Angeles Rams at Washington. If the Redskins win Sun day, their 1962 record will top their combined victory total for both 1960 and 1061. And they are picked by 4 points to beat the winlcss Rams. Green Bay is the choice by fl points to beat the Lions in the clash between the NFL's only two perfect-record teams. Both have 3-0 records. The Redskins lead the East with two wins and a lie. There was a Saturday night NFL game pitting the Phila delphia Eagles against the Steelers at Pittsburgh. In other Sunday games, the New York Giants are the choice by 6 points over the Cardinals at St. Louis; the Baltimore Colts are favored by 3 at home over the San Francisco Forty Miners; me Cleveland Browns are 13 at home over the Dallas Cow boys, and the Chicago Bears are 6 over the Vikings at Minnesota. By OSCAR FRALEY New York (UPI) The New York Yankees came home to Ruthville Saturday hoping to bust loose with their famed power when they send fire balling Bill Stafford against wily Billy Pierce today in the third game of the World Series. And add a snicker or two from bis Willie McCovey, whom the smart-alecks cr.c? tabbed a flop. Sanford showed a lot of stamina, among other things, when he pitched the San Fran cisco Giants to a brilliant three-hit, 2-0 victory over the New York Yankees Friday to even the World Scries at one victory apiece before 43,910 fans at Candlestick Park. And ganRling, easy - goinB McCovey proved he can de liver the BIG hit by wallop ing one of Ralph Terry's slid ers for a seventh-inning home run that made matters easier for Sanford and the Giants in the last two frames. Shoots at Fenct So the series resumes in New York Sunday when Mc Covey will get a whack at that invitingly yhort right field corner at Yankee Sta dium. The rap that Sanford didn't have staying strength stem med from the fact that he fin ished only 13 of 3B starting assignments this season while compiling a 24-7 record. Nothing appeared tc bother the broad-shouldered 33-year-old New Englander Friday, neither the virus, a shortage of runs from his teammates, nor the threatening Yankee bats. Sanford yielded a pop-bunt single to Tom Tresh in the fourth, a hard single by Cle tis Boyer in the fifth and a two-out double by Mickey Mantle in the ninth, just be fore he induced Roger Mnris to hit into a game-ending in field out. Tresh, who stole second following his infield hit. and Mantle were the only Yan kees to reach second base. Sanford struck out six, walked three and never pitched to more than four baiters in any inning. Terry, who lost his fourth World Series game and still is without a win in five series starts, gave up six hits, but two of these were extra-base blows that fijred in each of the San Francisco runs. In addition to McCovcy's homer, Chuck Hiller led off the Giants' first inning with a double down the right field line which Maris nearly caught. A sacrifice bunt by Felipe Alou moved Hiller to third base, from where he scored on Matty Alo us grounder to Bobby Richard son. By HOWARD APPLEGATE Eugene -IUPD- A sluggish Oregon football team over came its own mistakes with a tough defense Saturday for a 14-0 victory over the spirited Spartans of San Jose State. Mel tThe Marvel) Renfro i passed 50 yards to halfback Larry Hill for one touchdown and scored the other himself 'on a one-yard plunge to cli max a 78-yard drive. Outside of those two thrusts, the Wcbfoots, favored to win by up to five touchdowns, fail ed to penetrate beyond the San Jose 19-yard line until the closing moments. A fum ble stopped an Oregon drive on the 10 late in the game. San Jose State, which lost its fourth straight game, miss ed two golden scoring oppor tunities after recovering Ore gon fumbles. In the first half, reserve Spartan center Steve Mumma tell on a fumble on the Ore con 34. San Jose drove to the 4, where Larry Hansen drop ped a pass from quarterback Rand Carter in the end zone on r tackle-eligible play. All It II RBI of his siege guns, Elston How ard and Bill (Moose) Skowron, were back off the injury list and ready to return to action Because, he hinted, the Yanks were convinced that they had to roil up their sleeves against the NL champions after being shut out, 2-0, in the second game at San Francisco. "The stiffness is gone and I'll be okay," said Howard who jammed his right wrist in the first game. Skowron said that a wrench ed back muscle "is much bet ter and I'm ready." The Yankees knew they'd better be, even though they were back in Yankee stadium, where they always have a big edge against the opposition be cause of the park's awesome proportions, and were 7-5 picks in today's third game as well as 9'i to 5 to lake it all. Stafford, who has a 14-9 mark this season, faces a stiff chore, however, against Pierce, a fugitive from the American league who knows the Yankees well. Little Billy left the AL this season and won 16 games for the Giants against only six losses and, more important has a long record against the Bronx bombers. Over the years he is 25-37 against them. Rain which mired the in field kept the Yankees from working out Saturday and the Sunday forecast was for con tinued cloudiness with temper atures in the high 60 s. Houk, in reviewing the even split in the first two games, said he didn't sec how the three-game pennant fight which the Giants won from the Los Angeles Dodgers had hurt the Yankee opponents as far as pitching was concerned. "My biggest problem is that my pitchers haven t been get ting enough work, especially in the bullpen," he lamented. "Some of the fellows haven't worked in seven or eight days." i Giants 'Solid' He labeled the Giants a "solid" club and said that the Yankees were particularly im pressed by shortstop Jose Pa gan and second baseman Chuck Hiller. Despite the rain and the fact that most of the Giants were complaining of being tired from the playoffs and the rush into the series, Giant Manager Alvin Dark held a light work out at the stadium for his club. Dark said that he didn't par ! ticularly consider today's third contest a key game. "I don't believe in key ; games." he said with a smile. 1 "You have to win four games to win the series.
